So you think this is a good thing, then - right? I don't.
However, some kids live in less than idea circumstances. If, as in this case, their is an older sibling with a drug problem in the house and the child asks to be trained in the use of narcan, I'm sort of OK with it. I would prefer that the drug abuser be removed from the home, but sometimes that just doesn't happen.
If it was a parent, the kid needs to be in foster care.
If there is anyone in the house with a drug problem to this level do you honestly think they are going to keep the drugs out of the house? The very presence of the person (and most likely the drugs) puts the child at risk as well. The older sibling is obviously lacking in judgment. The only people I knew in HS and college who used hard drugs were introduced to them by their older siblings. Yea, yea - causation and correlation. But is that really the kind of role model you want hanging around? And then make the younger sibling responsible for them? What the hell kind of parent allows that kind of situation? No thanks.

Pfft. Stop letting facts get in the way of a good rant. Can you believe the stupid liberals demanding that toddlers patrol crack houses and administer first aid to the addicts? Will the madness never end??!! So you think this is a good thing, then - right?

What really got my Irish up is they had the balls to compare it to using an epi pen.
Big difference between the two in my mind. An adult with a severe allergy will be able to self administer. If an adult uses drugs to a point where they can't self administer then you are forcing the child to be more responsible for the adult then the adult choose to be.
Sorry, but that's just messed up.

www.yahoo.com/parenting/should-kids-be-trained-to-treat-moms-heroin-od-193627566.html"Having a heroin-addicted parent is something that young children should never have to experience — but many live with the reality right in their family, either through parents or older siblings. It’s why some adults are seeking to empower them in a controversial way: by training kids as young as 8 to administer a lifesaving substance called naloxone, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose."
I know the liberals will jump all over me, but this is just wrong on so many levels, and yes - I predicted this quote even before I read it: “But for those of us who believe in empowering a child to possibly save a life, we should be able to do so.”
So let's make drugs legal, leave kids in the care of addicts (because it's better for them, after all) then condition "empower" them to believe they are responsible for the lives of their addicted family/friends and God help them if they don't get to them in time. Of COURSE this is a good thing, right?

sidebar - are all those candies produced in nut-free processing plants? just a sanity check. even though they don't HAVE nuts, they may still be a risk for cross-contamination. Chiver - I went to several nut free boards and those were listed the most frequently. Even with that, I checked the bags and they all stated "processed in a peanut and tree nut free facility" or something to that effect. I'm also going to get some non candy items like glow sticks, mini slinkys, and bubbles for kids who may have other food type allergies. Back to the regular program.

Ummm, still putting thought into that.
We're going to have a purple pumpkin this year and I want to make sure the candy is SAFE!!! (we'll have "contaminated" stuff in a separate bowl.)
Skittles, smarties, Rolos, plain Hershey's kisses, Whoppers, and Tootsie pops for the purple pumpkin (nut free).
Snickers, Twix, Kit Kats, Almond snickers, and Butterfingers for the other bowl.
What is your greatest accomplishment in life so far?

The high school district I just moved out of had one kid stab a teacher in the eye a few years back. Last year another was charged as an adult for raping a 14yo on school grounds. Teachers have been punched, there are metal detectors at entrances, and kids are sent home all the time for wearing colors. This is not the delinquent school, btw, we have a special HS for those deemed too disruptive to function in the above environment. I don't think some people realize what some schools are like these days. The fact that you have to have "public safety officers" on site speaks volumns IMHO. AND little attention is being given to the fact that the other two adults in the room believe the officer acted appropriately. news.yahoo.com/c-sheriff-reveal-findings-probe-black-students-arrest-131457130.html#"The teacher and administrator who witnessed the encounter felt Fields acted appropriately, Lott said."So the three adults who were actually in the room believe it was appropriate. Yet the public is acting on a video clip that doesn't show or give all the facts. The court of public opinion appears to have won yet again.

You know, it's soooooo easy to sit here and armchair quarterback and second guess peoples judgment. Because everyone is perfect and behaves as expected in a civilized society.
Oh, right - we have no idea how much abuse was and is hurled at these people every day by these outstanding examples of humanity.
Sorry, some smart assed little punk calls me the c word I'd probably haul off and slap them as well. Admittedly two wrongs don't make a right, but to verbally degrade a woman to a sex part meant only for male pleasure is to me more abusive than a slap in the face.
And we wonder why our brightest don't go into the teaching profession. I know some who left because they're expected to put up with bullshit like this.
Keep blaming everyone except the ones who are the problem. See how well that's working?

It's sweet that you're concerned about your cousin. But, and the end of the day, your cousin is an adult and will do as she wishes.
FWIW (and I tend to be a very rational person) I knew DH was the "one" around date # 5 or 6. We dated for about 11 months before we got engaged, then got married 11 months after the engagement.
We just had our 21st anniversary. Sometimes you do just know.
I hope all works out for her.

Don't worry, they slowed the video down, showing the 100# punching the 200+ #weight lifting police officer, during the take down, Now it is all justified. Boy I wonder just how bad that police officer was hurt by that punch, did he take a medical leave? The girl of course was not injured, Nothing to see here folk, just move on. If there is video that she did hit him it's irrelevant. Are you saying only 200# weight lifting dudes should be charged with assaulting an officer? Women and small dudes can swing with impunity? She was swearing and swinging at him!!! What does that call for in your book? Would your reaction be different if she was a 200# muscle bound linebacker? Exactly how much of this behavior are the cops supposed to tolerate?

"But mooooom, why am I grounded and having my electronics taken away"
"Because you were talking in class and disrupting it for everyone for the second time this week, earning a detention. The teacher is the final authority in the classroom and they, not you, get to decide what you will do while you are in their class"
Why do I think the above conversation have never taken place in that girls' household?

MJ2.0 - I don't know what you were prescribed, but it's usually 2 hits X number of times a day. You want to exhale gently, then breath in as deeply and evenly as you can inhaling the puffer as you press one hit. Hold you breath for at least 15 seconds, (30 is better if you can do it), to give your lungs a chance to absorb the medicine. Exhale slowly, do not let your breath out in a gust (a heavy gust expels more of the medicine than a gentle breath out). Wait a minute (this is where most people do it wrong) to let the first round of medicine do it's job and dilate your bronchial tubes. That will allow more of the medicine from the second puff to get deeper into your lungs and really open them up. Once a minute has passed, do the second puff the same way as the first. Taking two hits, one right after the other, does not get twice the medicine into your lungs and it doesn't go as deep as it could. It wasn't until my second hospitalization that a respiratory therapist taught and explained this to me. Both my primary care physician and my pulmonary physician didn't go over this with me. I'm guessing the first didn't know and the second assumed I'd already been taught since I had the inhalers already. Also, since I'm on a mini soap box - don't use too much. It's tempting if you're not breathing well, but too much of that stuff can kill you. If you're having to use more than prescribed you need to get the medication changed. Sorry to sound like a mother hen, but I see this stuff being mis-used way too often. Hope you're feeling better soon.

www.yahoo.com/health/the-number-of-male-domestic-1284479771263030.html"According to the CDC’s statistics — estimates based on more than 18,000 telephone-survey responses in the United States — roughly 5,365,000 men had been victims of intimate partner physical violence in the previous 12 months, compared with 4,741,000 women. By the study’s definition, physical violence includes slapping, pushing, and shoving.
More severe threats like being beaten, burned, choked, kicked, slammed with a heavy object, or hit with a fist were also tracked. Roughly 40 percent of the victims of severe physical violence were men. The CDC repeated the survey in 2011, the results of which were published in 2014, and found almost identical numbers — with the percentage of male severe physical violence victims slightly rising."
I've posted more than once on male rape statistics and have had peeps admitting to being shocked. Well, here's something else to think about. Men are abused at almost the same (for severe violence) or greater rates than women. Yet society focuses only on women as the victim and almost never considers men can be victimized as well. Add to that the higher potential for a man to lose access to his kids if he seeks a divorce, and they are really backed into a corner. That, and the social stigma, almost mocking, of being a male abuse victim. I have to wonder why there isn't better public education on this. Abuse is wrong, period.

well, sinc ethis last update, I've had a few good days and some not so good ones, one day I threw my briefcase down the stairs at the house before work and started crying a bit, but then i was OK and rallied to get to work. Nothing says "success" like tearing up in front of your wife and children.
I think things are improving from here though. luckily, my boss is back in town and can help me understand expectations, etc. They're lucky to have you. You're setting a good example for your kids by demonstrating that it's ok to cry when you're scared, upset, etc. You're letting your wife know you are comfortable enough with her to be able to break down in front of her. AND - you're ensuring you'll be a pain in their lives longer by not keeping the stress bottled in and having a heart attack at an early age. It's very healthy actually. Well done! (Don't forget to breath!!!)

Can you contact your Secretary of State and:
1. Confirm the scam company is registered to do business in your state, and 2. Either way get them to send some sort of cease and desist letter?
I have little love for our government (IL) but the SOS does a decent job of nipping this kind of stuff in the bud once notified.

Went to the doctor last night and was prescribed an inhaler and the "good" cough medicine. Filling it now. ☺ I don't want to make any assumptions, but have you used an inhaler before? Do you know the correct way to use one? (say's the asthmatic who had to show her father the right way to use his inhaler because his primary care physician didn't ). ETA - sorry you're feeling like crap but glad you went to get some help!

calling real estate lawyer... swamp I'm a lawyer, not an accountant.
But, she takes it at the previous owners cost basis and will owe capital gains on the sale. It is my understanding that if they keep the house, there will not be any recogniziable gain until there is a sale.
But I don't really get the bitching about capital gains tax. Someone gave you a house. Pay the damn capital gains taxes on the sale. It's money that wasn't yours to begin with.
Swamp - I get where you're coming from. But if the house had been inherited free and clear the estate exemption would have (I believe) shielded any gains from taxation to the heirs. Since half the house was in the husband's name, I'm going to say he'll have to pay some capital gains tax -which (ugg) could be a LOT if he has zero basis in the property. I'm corporate tax, not individual so I'm not 100% sure on this but mention it because this is an area which I've heard gets messed up a lot in amateur estate planning.

The maples in our village are at their peak right now. It's stunning! We've been getting consistent rain so the fall colors hopefully going to last a good long time.
When's the last time you tried something new?
