Religious affiliation would have nothing to do with it.
A lot would depend on how far above the rest of the area schools the "best school" is.
If there was a huge gap (as in best school was light years better) then I'd do anything. If it was only slightly better, then I probably wouldn't.
Sissy and I were in that position in HS. I didn't realize we were in the "poor" crowd because dress code was very strict (down to the types of shoes you could wear) and I really can't tell if diamonds are real or not.
Only found out when the guy who I was dating took me to meet his parents, and his grandparents, and his cousin (bitch) who went to the same school as I did.
She was mortified when she found out who he was dating. Apparently the "rich" crowd was able to pick out the "poor crowd" with ease. I'm so glad his parents and grandparents had more class then she did.

Hiya, The Captain!! Yes, DH bought a smoker about 2 years ago, and it is on our back patio. It uses pellets, and can also BBQ food. It's cute? Entertaining? to watch DH pour over his cookbook, and subsequently collect the necessary pellets/rubs/ingredients. "Do we have Dijon?" You get the picture. Most smoked things have been awesome. Ribs, pork loin, etc. Some things not so much. He didn't listen when I was apprehensive about the corned beef. That and the London Broil. I ended up semi-saving both cuts by slow cooking them the next day. Not sure what pucks are? A puck smoker is auto feed, really set it and forget it. www.amazon.com/Bradley-Smokers-Original-Smoker-20-25-Inch/dp/B007FFYHM0/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1445532170&sr=1-2&keywords=bradley+smoker&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011No, you don't smoke London broil, corned beef, or skirt steak. You.just.don't. Salmon, OTOH is amazing. Baked beans slow cooked on the smoker - you'll never go back to canned. Ohhh, I think I'll do a batch of those this weekend as well. The ease of pellet/puck smokers appeals to me...BUT there is something primal about sitting out on the patio, stoking the fire, misting the meat, and hydrating the cook for a full day in the cool fall to get tasty, succulent, meat.

I'm a dry ribs person too. To me, the sauce just covers up the meat too much, though on the side, a dab of a good sauce can be a fine thing. And when I saw the title of the thread, I thought that The Captain either had a kitchen fire or wanted to try rolling and smoking some new kind of meat drug. BBQ is a meat drug. There is nothing sexier than a man covered in bbq smoke. Well, maybe a hot dude in a fireman's uniform but... (focus, Captain, focus dammit!) I didn't want to use the title "smoker" and have peeps think I was talking about cigarettes.

Dear Universe, Yea - I'm resistant to novocaine among other things. Took two shots to get me numbed up for some dental work. So numbed up that apparently I didn't realize it when I took a big chomp of my own lip/inside cheek. So here I sit at work today with a fat lower lip telling all my co-workers "You should see the other guy". What makes it even funnier? It's DH's and my anniversary today. He kindly told me that's the only reason he's not pointing and laughing at me. Ahhhh - true love.

Don't know. It will be our first time home for Halloween since we used to live in a rural area and crashed SIL's house/neighborhood.
I plan on setting up a fire pit, two lawn chairs, a side table and cracking open a bottle of wine. Yes, we will have to good stuff as well.
What was the best costume you ever wore?

Come on down, Captain. If the weather conditions are just right, I can smell the aroma of the BBQ cooking from 19 miles east of the contest site along the river. Memphis In May BBQ Cooking ContestJEALOUS!!! I was just down in Paducah a few weeks ago for: www.bbqontheriver.org/Hell yea, if we do the circuit, that is one I'd love to be invited to. I'm so jealous of folks who can have their choice of good BBQ. Yannow, we really don't have that up here. There are a few places that do BBQ, but honestly - mine is better. AND most places up north act like it ain't bbq unless you smother it in sauce - blech! (Yea, I know. Modesty isn't my strong suite when it comes to my cooking, but I've had too many briskets, shoulders, and ribs disappear at parties that I knew I purchase more than enough, to know it's tasty!) So I do my own, and vac freeze it for the cold winter days when I need a fix. Hubby is damn lucky they don't make a bbq scented cologne!

Ok, Iggy aka IG - I needed to follow up on the below post: ymam.proboards.com/post/2347111Do you guys have a traeger? It's pellets only, right? They don't have puck versions. We have a charbroil offset smoker literally on it's last legs (both wheels broken up, held level by bricks) and will be getting a new smoker next year. DH wants to get a pellet or a puck smoker. I hear they are so easy it should be a crime. While yes, all I want is good bbq, I also may want to do the competition circuit when we retire. I don't think you're allowed to use pellet or puck smokers in competition bbq. Anyways - any feedback you can give would be appreciated. Speaking of smoking, I'm gonna do another brisket this weekend. Probably the last on of the year. Yummm! (PS - Other peeps can give feedback as well, just knew iggster had a smoker in her house!)

So, back to bitching... Dear accounting profession, I know we are trying to be more uniform and transparent. I know we don't want another Enron to happen. But can you tell me how exactly making me do "XYZ" will add any value or accomplish these goals? Wait - it won't?!? Just allows you to check a box on a checklist? Seriously, this was my morning. Regards - The Captain. welcome to my world of FDA-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing. not always, but sometimes. Ugg. I used to work for one of those. Good times.

Russian Caravan actually has a smoky flavor to it. It's full bodied like most black teas. It's my go to on wintery days when the ground is covered in snow.

Yes, part is new job, part is just me getting over my control issues.
Part is legitimate, this job really is moving from a doer to a leader, but i'm a virgo, so i can't stand work not being done well or efficiently, and I get to witness a lot of that and worse, see myself unable to do the things that would make me a good example in this work because i lack the subject matter expertise. That said, I know my boss put me in this role because she sees me as a huge leader over time and that she sees me going big (maybe VP level one day if I really wanted it, which I don't quite).
Yesterday scheduled a meeting with our Fidelity rep to run the numbers on when i have FU money... (my calcs say 3-12 years).
I think the biggest part is me getting over my control issues. I serve at the company's pleasure and need to dive in and commit to doing whatever they need me to do. That said, i'm just really having a lot more emotional issues with this than I ever thought possible.
I think i'm synthesizing my way to something a little better. If i can get control of the bad parts, manage expectations, get some agreed upon vision of what "success" is, and fix my f&cking attitude, then it's a huge blessing. Ahah! You don't need to be a SME to improve a process. Your boss knows this. I bet you know how to fix issues without knowing all the details, you just need to figure out how to break that down for areas in which you don't have 100% expertise. To be honest, the above is what separates a leader from a doer (as you alluded to). No boss can know 100% of what is under them, however they should know who does, how to draw on those resources, and how to leverage that across the organization. Sorry if I sound like a motivation poster, but sometimes cliché's are true. FWIW I think you'll be fine. It sucks going outside your comfort zone but you can handle it.

Wow dude! This is the most negative I can ever recall seeing you.
AND it's only been a week?
I'm not sure what to say, get out fast or it's just new role jitters. Only you know the truth.
FWIW - I am sorry you're going through this.
Scratch the first sentence - this is really the only time I can recall you posting something this negative.

snort. I love bad puns. yeah, the first few cups I wasn't getting the taste, it started yesterday. But we also ran out of milk and I've been using powder creamer and I wanted to double check that it wasn't the creamer stuff. I love the smell of coffee. And I love tiramisu. But anywhere else I find the flavor yucky. And I've tried it repeatedly, both in the US and in Europe so I like to think I've done the try different kinds to see if there's a variety/variation you like thing. You put creamer in hot tea? I've only ever seen one other person do that. Waves arm in the air - me me me! I put cream in some of my hot tea as well. Earl Grey, Irish Breakfast, Russian Caravan to name a few. Mostly the black teas.

I see your point Captain, but the older two are going to have significant loans to pay back as it is. Oldest needed a car to commute, so that is a car loan we now have. It is a long commute often on country roads so couldn't be a beater. She will probably end up costing us the most when I actually think about the numbers. DS18 is a great kid. He really put in the effort to get the stats to qualify for the significant awards. I was determined to make the numbers work for him. Luckily, he will probably end up costing us the least. Youngest is too fickle. She does well when she wants to, then decides she isn't going to invest in it and her grades drop. She's been like this since elementary school. So until she changes, I am not willing to invest extra in her education. We try to treat our kids fairly, that doesn't mean equally. Ok, now I get it. When you said the youngest was the middle with grades I didn't get this. For some reason my mind read it as if she was in middle school still pulling in good grades. If the two oldest have consistently gotten good grades, and the youngest hasn't, then yea - I'd make sure the ones who always had good grades would be able to go to college. Still - in this case the birth order does suck because she could totally get her act together and be where the two oldest is by the time schools starts. Usually it's the other way around, where there are fewer resources for the older kids and more for the younger kid. I hope it works out for all of them. (Yet another reason I'm very glad I stopped at one).

woah, I don't think we can criticize how parents spend their money. I have no idea how I would react if my oldest screwed up, or was in jail or just needed way more help for whatever reason than my second. However, I would hope to have an open enough relationship with both of them to discuss whatever my reasons were and minimize the strain on my kids relationships with each other.
ETA - I would much rather be able to stand on my own than necessitate the help of my parents for the rest of my life. I would not be jealous of a sibling who was unfortunate enough to be in that position, I would feel bad for them. I'm just stating my feelings and what I've seen happening with my friend. The poster I quoted has told their youngest that they plan on spending more on the two oldest and having less available to help them for college. Of course it's their money and they can do what they wish, but don't delude yourself if you thinking the youngest is going to be happy about it. In fact, the OP has already stated that's the case, but seems to be ok with the hurt feelings. Sounds like favorites to me, and like I said, it sucks. Kids don't ask to be born. That's the parents choice, and how the parents treat their children is also their choice.

We had no savings for college. DH went through a long period of under/unemployment when the kids were young. I was working part time depending on his schedules, so nothing extra to set aside for school. Today, oldest has worked part time, taken out loans, some fed & state grants and lives at home and commutes. IF she doesn't mess up she should graduate in spring w/ a PTA degree. She will have about $16K in loans to pay back. DS18 is a high stats kid. None of the PA schools offered the ECE degree he wants. Penn State & Pitt had the programs but he only was offered around $5K in scholarship money. I had a hard time finding something affordable nearby & that meant within a 6 hour drive. He got a full tuition scholarship & engineering scholarships to college, a 15 hour drive away. VEry far, and he won't be home much, but he had to go where it was affordable for a degree. He will graduate w/ the $27K in federal loans at the worst. Youngest is middle ground w/ the grades. With the money we are paying out to help the older two, there will be even less available for her. I have told her she needs to get good grades if she wants choices. Otherwise she will be doing the 2 yr tract at a local school and working part time. She isn't happy about it, but again, she has to do what is affordable. I think college has become way overpriced, and it has taken a lot of research & time to find affordable options for higher education. But there are still ways to achieve it, but it isn't easy on anyone involved. So if you are high income, you have many more options, and don't have to go broke doing it. Poor kid. Because of birth order she will get less help than the older siblings. Sucks to be her. Why not make the older two take out some private loans so each gets an equal amount of assistance from the parents? I have a friend who spent most of child #2's college money paying legal fee's for child #1 who screwed up royally. There is a lot of resentment there and I can't blame #2 at all. Our children don't ask to be born, and when parents play favorites it hurts.

DH I have bake hundreds of dozens of cookies every Christmas (not a typo). The only reason we can do this with relative ease and enjoyment is due to our kitchenaid mixer, which has been in use close to 20 years.
We have a plain black one with the stand that you raise and lower with a lever. Don't know the model but it's as solid as a iron wall and a real workhorse. I think it may be an artisan.
Money very well spent.

So a simple "Are you ok with this" will kill the mood. Got it. The problem still exists if you don't keep asking before every.single new "act". Can I kiss you? Can I put my hand on your right boob? Can I put my hand on your left boob? Can I put my mouth "down there"? Can I turn you? Can I turn you again? Can I insert? Can I take out? Yes, it might sound absurd as you read it, but based on this new law, women can say that they only consented to parts 1, 2 and 3 but parts 4, 5 and 6 were not asked and therefor it's now rape. Ok, maybe I'm missing something really obvious. Can anyone point me to the legislation that changes the standard for rape as noted above? Because I thought what we were talking about was changing on the perception of consent is taught to teens. As with anything new, it appears there isn't clarity yet on what is exactly to be taught (common core, anyone?) I'm serious, has the legal definition of rape been changed by this?

I don't know. I've read several articles by him and this guy is smart. By the sounds of this, he's a bit cagey as well. He knows what he's getting into AND I think the 5 conditions were brilliant, especially the "no motions to vacate the chair" and everyone in the freedom caucus must vote for him as speaker. time.com/4080726/speaker-paul-ryan-freedom-caucus/ At the very least he's putting the minority (that caused the deadlocks) on notice that they have to fall in line with what the majority of the party wants. I really hope this works.

Aaand I still don't know what Kobe beef tastes like. Worked late yesterday and didn't get home until 7:40. DH was just starting dinner when I walked in.
DH undercooked it on the grill, then overcooked it in the microwave.
When I poked at my half and said "ummm" he put the blame on me instead of owning it and said it was my fault I didn't help him cook dinner.
I do the weekends, he does weekdays. So, being tired I just told him "I'm done" and went to bed early.
On top of that the cubs lost yesterday.
