Our case counts are staying pretty low. And thankfully, the high-risk people have mostly been vaccinated. My husband and I are fully vaccinated. The health department has switched to doing walk-in clinics, so that people who can’t or won’t schedule appointments can still get vaccinated. But since Covid never really got that bad out here, there are way too many vaccine skeptics running around. At least people are still pretty good about masks. The majority of people in my area were wearing them even before it was mandated. They lifted the mask mandate, but they really didn’t. School kids still have to wear them, and private businesses can and do require them. Any gatherings over 50 people still have a mask mandate. But since there are only 550 ICU beds for a population of 3 million people, it won’t take much for things to get out of control out here. I was able to get my 52-year-old husband vaccinated a full month before I could get my 90-year-old mother in Massachusetts vaccinated. I can’t believe those people. What a shit show. Massachusetts is swimming in the brains and tax money and they still can’t put together a decent website or scheduling app. Hmmm, I’m only 61 and healthy, live in Massachusetts, and I have been fully vaccinated since April 15th. I had no problem scheduling either vaccination. In fact, the hospital my primary care doc works for reached out to me to set up my appointments through their portal in the middle of Msrch. 90 year olds like your mother were at the very front of the line in December and January in Massachusetts. I’m not sure why you had trouble getting her an appointment but since no state has ever vaccinated all of its residents in such a short time frame before I’m going to assume it was due to early system issues (which we should have all expected) AND distribution issues caused by the Trump administration. I actually think Massachusetts did a decent job of making the vaccine available as quickly as possible in a reasonable order of priority once funding and vaccines became available under the Biden administration.

There is a rumour here, that those who are getting reactions to the vaccines ......... are those who have already encountered Covid19 in the population www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/strong-reaction-first-covid-19-vaccine-may-signal-previous-infection-expertsHow true that is.... I don't really know. Some reaction seems to be quite common, although as an anecdote ...... a colleague told me that he was "absolutely floored" by the vaccine.... and then went on to say that he went out for his usual 5k run that night... and only managed 2K .......Which doesn't sound like "absolutely floored" to me or he would have been in bed. I got no reaction to the AZ vaccine ....... but did prepare.. and made sure I wasn't working the next day just in case (and took some paracetamol) We are just finishing vulnerable groups and over 50s........ There is going to be a vaccine shortage for us now because India are not exporting (they have a big infection rate of their own) and the EU are not exporting. We are making some though on a smaller scale of 1m per week. New vaccine boosters (for variants) should be available for vulnerable and carers in September. Death rates have decreased by 90% because of the vaccination program.... and our predominant (UK variant) is covered by the current vaccines. “Encountered” = obviously/seriously sick with the virus or simply exposed? I work in essential retail. We see hundreds, often thousands, of customers in a single day in a 145-year old building with lots of small interconnected rooms which make social-distancing nearly impossible. I am absolutely certain I have been exposed to the virus. Boston gave New York City a run for its money in the early first surge in terms of infection rates and deaths. There is no way I wasn’t exposed. Perhaps I was infected but asymptomatic but I have not been ill in the past 15 months. I sailed through my first vaccine. Maybe my response to the second round in 3 weeks will be “interesting”?

I got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Thursday. I live in Massachusetts. Based on my employment in agriculture, I was eligible for the vaccine on this past Monday, 3/22. But, I got an email on Saturday. 3/20, from the major Boston hospital my primary care doc is affiliated with inviting me to get the vaccine. I logged in promptly and grabbed a slot for this past Thursday. I’m 61, have HBP that is controlled by meds, and carry a little padding around my waist, but am otherwise very fit and active, so no obvious health reason to get the early invite. No real side effects — a little stinging at the injection site and yesterday I MILDLY felt like I was coming down with something, but today I am fine. I go back for the second shot on 4/15.
DH sees a different primary care at a different, smaller, regional hospital. He got an invite on Tuesday (61, with managed HBP, high cholesterol, and a little padding) but can’t get in got his first shot until 4/14. He has spent today trolling the various sites and replying to Twitter alerts trying to grab a sooner appointment. We are rule followers and have been VERY compliant, but our ODS graduates from college in May, with an in-person, albeit outdoor, ceremony and we REALLY want to attend. 🤞🙏

so - I've been ordering from whole foods for delivery lately, whole foods adds a tip of 7-10 dollars, I think that is good for delivery - or should I add more? then today - order 3 english cucumbers - but they delivered 5.....rotteny ones. Never would have picked these would just go without, but I hate to complain, given, 2020, 2021 so far etc. oh, and they delivered to wrong house, I had to troop through the snow to get them from neighbors porch. Seems petty to complain though, cuz - yeah - thinking it must be rough. but those cucumbers, really - oh they're kind of rotten, given a few extra? Obviously if I am getting 3 english cukes, that is suppose to last over several days, these, ugh, likely need to cut away a lot of it today - likely totally trash tomorrow or next day. irks me to pay for this at all. but...yah....wwyd? I do both delivery and curbside pickup from Whole Foods. Delivery is through Amazon shoppers and drivers, curbside seems to be by store staff. The delivery ordering system allows for tips, the curbside pickup system does not allow for tips. During the tragic, horrific, surges here in Massachusetts, I tipped the delivery drivers (who are also the shoppers) REALLY well (20-30%). I still tip 20%. Curbside, I tip 10% because, from my observation, the person who delivers your groceries to your car is not the person who picked them for you and I don’t want the delivery person to get all the credit. I have yet to figure out if or how I can tip the picker (which is both annoying given it’s the almighty Amazon and unfair). I drive a pickup, and leave the cash tucked into a ratchet strap clip in the bed. As for rotten produce, missing items, and the like — I am asked to review every order after delivery/pickup, and I do. It’s a simple survey, with no room to extrapolate, but allows me to rate the selections, the bagging, the delivery, was the delivery person masked, etc. I then can ask for a refund for problem items and I am told to just keep the bad/wrong stuff. It’s NOT complaining to seek a refund for rotten good or missing items — I spend a TON of money at Whole Foods (probably the equivalent of some people’s mortgage payments) and I order what I NEED. I also make it easy for the shopper/picker by selecting “no substitutions” so there isn’t a ton of time spent texting back and forth. If I don’t get an item or two (and it’s not listed as out of stock), then it’s a loss to me I shouldn’t have to pay for. But I’m also careful to point out what was done well and to give consistently high overall ratings (unless there is a major screw up). My goal is to gently and kindly educate the shoppers to carefully follow the orders they receive. So, Rukh, ask for the refund, review the delivery, and tip as you see fit.

After living in Southern hot summers for 27 years, I still find the extended heat physically exhausting. Give me a New England summer any time. New England summers are getting toastier and more humid by the year.

I work in “the business”.
I live in Zone 5, so planting is still months away (we get hard frosts around here as late as June 5th!!).
But, just an FYI if you haven’t bought your seeds yet, we are already running into trouble getting seeds in from our vendors (and, as I said, we’re nowhere near the start of our Spring season). For example, Renee’s Garden has shut down ordering completely. I’ve had customers tell me that Johnny’s and Baker are sold out of many seeds online.
Botanical Interest is the one brand we sell that seems to be still well-stocked.
We’ve been told to tell customers that they should buy any seeds they want when they see them and to not wait for the next trip to our business.
It’s setting up to be another record sales season!!

That would piss me off too. If you're going to use that logic, might as well include those that refuse to wear masks or social distance in the higher risk group that gets priority as well. I would be irritated but I do wonder if smokers are taking up a disproportionate amount of medical resources. This might be one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of patients needing to be hospitalized. Vaping also seems to increase the likelihood that one will need hospitalization.

Preface: my little town is solidly in the red. My employer has fought very hard over the past year to stay afloat AND to keep employees and customers safe. Massachusetts is in the throes of a tragic surge. People are dying needlessly because some people won’t follow the rules. I work in retail — a family-owned (not my family) business with one location. The business is spread out over a very large area — several acres. There is a door at the front and one in the rear. Today, 2 people decided to bring takeout food (from somewhere else — we don’t sell food) — and sit RIGHT OUTSIDE AND AT the door, on a display table, and eat their meal with masks off. I approached them pleasantly and told them they were required to wear masks at all times on our property. They told me they were eating. I said it didn’t matter, masks are required at all times, please put them on. The woman told me she didn’t have a mask. The man said they were leaving when they were done eating. I said they were done and should leave then. The woman then said that they didn’t need masks, that they are outside. I said it’s private property and we made our own rule that masks are required at all times. She said, again, but she is outside. I told them that she was at a private business and not at a public picnic area and to leave. They gathered up their food, climbed into a gorgeous Porsche, and sped away. Asshats. It’s people like that who will kill ME. I can't get past the fact that people want to sit outside in Massachusetts in the middle of January. That aside, I personally would probably have let them be...if I'm afraid of catching the virus from unmasked individuals then the last thing I want to do is approach them. It was warm today — about 40. 😁. I was upset when I posted. The point I left out was that, even absent a pandemic, in beautiful, rural, suburbia, why would you eat a takeout meal sitting on a display table outside the back door of a private business??? There is a gorgeous river landing 200 yards away. There are wide-open conservation fields a half mile away in either direction. There are so many beautiful picnic spots right along the road my employer is on. So, I had trouble wrapping my brain around the entire situation: eating takeout, in a very odd spot and high traffic spot, without masks! Oy.

pulmonarymdAside from the tin hat microchip and/or hoax theories, why are people turning down the vaccine? I’m particularly interested in why health care folks — even first responders who have seen the toll of this tragedy up close and personal — are refusing to get vaccinated?

And, long-term, the whackos have been emboldened and will continue to disrupt the government for at least the next 4 years (until Trump runs again🙄). Cruz, Hawley, et al will also cause continuing distraction from critical work getting done. I imagine every member of Congress is now afraid for their lives and for those of their family members. Yup, I’m not sleeping at night and my blood pressure is through the roof (even on meds). Scary times, very scary times. I'm the opposite. I am feeling very relieved. Republicans are denouncing Trump. They are admitting the election was fair. They are standing behind Biden. Some are agreeing that he should be removed. His defenders have been relatively quiet. His cabinet members are announcing he has gone too far. Repyblican governors are criticizing him everywhere they can. Fox news, although a little manic, they are not doing his bidding. His supporters are retracting their words and apologizing for their actions (in hopes to avoid punishment). Trump lost a shit ton of power on Wednesday. Now with Twitter banning him and Parler being removed from Apple and Google- he can't even talk to his people. There will be literally thousands of military style law enforcement in DC until after Biden is safely inagurated and settled in. This ugly chapter in US History is winding down. There will always be crazies, but without support from POTUS and Congress, they will lose numbers and maybe we can get back some of the people who have been in Q-land. I don’t think it’s that simple. Trump’s hate-filled, mysoginistic, racist, jingoistic, platform struck a chord with 70 million voters. They share his ugly philosophy. He didn’t brainwash them — the hate was already there — he just proudly brought it into the light. Trump won’t disappear into the mist — he’ll be right there egging them on. And there are certainly plenty of others waiting to step up and fill his shoes. Biden’s inauguration will only fuel their fire. It’s not anywhere near over yet. Not at all.

Some practical concerns:
After 9/11, why wouldn’t concerns about jihadists attacking the Capitol led to better physical security in the building? For example, why were windows breakable? Why wasn’t the scaffolding secured to prevent access to it and from it? Why aren’t the doors solid and securely locked when Congress is in session? Why isn’t there a secure fence around the building?
It just seems like Wednesday’s attack was long overdue by the least of our enemies. One thing for sure, Al Qaida and Isis now know how to gain entrance — just dress “American” — backpack and all — and walk right in during the next coup attempt. Securing the Capitol properly must become a primary goal but it will still take months if not years.
On a more short-term concern, I am very afraid for Joe Biden. Some how, some way, he MUST survive the next 12 days. Can you imagine the turmoil if something happens to him before the Inauguration??
On a related note, Pence was whisked out on Wednesday. Doesn’t Kamala Harris have a Secret Service detail now? Was she whisked out at the same time as Pence?

My little town of 13k is now a solid red zone. It leans toward very wealthy (I’m middle of the road middle class so poor in comparison, LOL) and apparently very wealthy people get together and/or travel for Christmas despite official pleas to not do so during a pandemic. Now they’re all wringing their hands on social media because one of the in-person cohorts in the local schools will have to go back to remote for a few weeks and “Remington, III” doesn’t do well with remote learning (that a parent would have to assist with/supervise). 🙄
It’s just too difficult sometimes to have sympathy for these people who are just so self-centered and uncooperative. 😖

City living for me right now, so no outdoor space. But I do have 2 walls of floor to ceiling windows with some beautiful sunlight! If I could maintain an indoor herb garden I would be thrilled. Which direction do those windows face?

My youngest graduated from high school 2019, and she went to college that fall. I was an utter disaster for a month. I struggled for at least four months. Then she got sent home because of the pandemic. Then, that was hard too. Anyhoo, I don't know who I am outside of work and parenting. I'm also trying to find something outside of parenting that is meaningful to me. See, I was sailing. I mean I love them and I’m happy to have them home, but I had found such a nice relaxed, doing my own things routine ... and I think I’m just a little worried after Covid changes I’m not getting it back again... This.

Miss Tequila , I'm trying to decide if I have been financially harmed by Covid. I could have been if I had contracted it. There would be several hundreds, maybe a few thousand, of dollars that I would have had to spend. I hve good insurance and savings, but not everyone on SS does. Medicare doesn't cover everything, you know. Prices on food have really increased. Fewer sales, shortages leading to higher prices, and so on have made my grocery bill much higher than usual. That's a result of covid. If I was struggling to get by on just a SS check, I could feel that I have been affected. You are right that I don't have to work since I receive a pension and SS, but maybe I wanted to earn extra money. I drive a 2006 Corolla and am trying to figure out how I will be able to replace it. I had planned on substituting and saving that income. But I don't have that option now because schools are such a hotbed of covid-19. So that's an unofficial loss of employment for me, an effect of covid. I'm fine, but my point is that you can't make the blanket statement that people on SS weren't harmed by Covid. Some have been. And like everything else, it is too hard to determine which people have been harmed. Maybe Mrs. o'Reilly was receiving $200 a month from her son to supplement her meager SS check, but now Sonny can't give that to her because he lost hours or his job. Maybe Mrs. Smythe is having to pick up the slack for her just graduated daughter who can't make rent. She needs the stimulus to help her daughter make it. We just don't know people's situation. So a blanket statement that people on SS haven't been affected isn't fair either. As I said before, there are no easy answers. Post of the Day!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Depending on how many restrictions or qualifications you have on it - it could almost cost more to implement then just giving people money. If it's people that were unemployed - what about those that were denied for whatever reason even though they lost their job? Or any 1099 worker that doesn't qualify? Or those that quit because someone had to watch the kids or take care of a relative but obviously didn't get ue because they quit? Or they live in a state that doesn't let you get ue for going from 40 to 30 hours? Or the tons of people that didn't get their hours cut but they employer cut everyone's pay by 20%? Creating a system that covers all that and does it correctly - how many millions would that be? How long would it take? They had no problem cutting corporate taxes in half saving them millions of dollars - EVERY YEAR. Fuck them for bitching about giving someone who makes 75k a one time now two time payment. Go ask Amazon to pay some taxes if we need money. Go ask apple. Go ask Walmart. This. So much this.

Good!
I had similar questions as Oped’s.
I also worried about liability issues.
Be as kind and accommodating as you can be to your neighbor — watch his house when he’s away, keep your yard up, bring over cookies on a regular basis, etc. 😁

ODS’ college pushed its Spring start date back to February 1 by eliminating Spring Break.
The current course schedule offers a mix of in-person, hybrid, online settings. I suspect it will all be online by the start of the semester as it was for the Fall.
They broke the Fall semester in half and students took 2 courses for 7 weeks in each half. Word is that everyone hated the intensity of that approach although the idea was that if things got bad and the college shut down, at least the students had a good chance of completing the first 2 courses. It appears, at this point in time, that all Spring courses will run the usual 14 week schedule.
ODS has done surprisingly very well with online learning, although I think active learning is always better than traditional passive approaches (I.e., lectures). He says that asynchronous courses mean he is teaching himself. He has dyslexia and some hearing loss, so he often needs to teach himself anyway so he has the skill set. I’ll leave open the lack of lacrosse as also contributing to his notable grade improvement, but I’ll deny I ever said it 😆. The Spring season is doubtful. Both Fall and Winter sports were cancelled and some schools in his conference have already cancelled the entire year’s athletics. ODS is comforted by the idea of going to grad school with one more season of NCAA eligibility. 😆
He has been living with his DGF’s family since March and will continue to do so unless there is a lacrosse season, at which point he’ll have to scramble and find an apartment closer to school. That shouldn’t be difficult — many students are moving home for the uncertain Spring semester and sub-lets are popping up fairly regularly on the various college Facebook pages.
So, basically, I’m waiting until February 1 to see how it will all play out.

YDS has been home for 9 days but has yet to find a test. 😣. Between the closing of many outdoor testing facilities due to colder weather and the current surge, the once readily-available testing is now nearly impossible to find. I finally understand what folks in other states are talking about when they say they can’t get a test. We’ve been spoiled in Massachusetts until now.
In the meantime, YDS has been quarantining in his room and the Mantown, using a separate bathroom, and all of us wearing a mask when he is out of his room. We have eaten no meals together yet. I finally saw his face yesterday for the first time since he got back during a socially-distanced, maskless, extended family Zoom. It has taken some thought and planning to ride out this quarantine, but it wasn’t difficult or isolating. Anyone can do it. Well, anyone who gives a damn can. 🙄

What is the procedure when a spouse’s co-worker tests positive for Covid?
DH just learned that someone in his department tested positive today.
He had a (masked!!) meeting for 10-15 minutes on Friday in a larger office, with an open door, and he sat to her side.
He will stay home tomorrow and call the Department of Health in the town where his job is located (he is responsible for HR among other duties at his small employer). He will notify other employees. He will get tested as advised.
I’m not freaking out because the odds were always in favor of one or more of us eventually being exposed at work. But, from a practical standpoint, what do I do with him? Do I lock him in a room by himself for 10 days (although we have been in close contact since Friday anyway but YDS is here quarantining from his trip home)? Should he eat by himself somewhere? We’ll have to share a bathroom since YDS is using the other bathroom while he quarantines. He doesn’t have symptoms and we won’t know until testing if the exposure even infected him, but what are the procedures? I feel like the CDC has changed its recommendations a few times...

Is Larry Bird still in French Lick? That would be a bit off the path for your son but not too far off. I went to seminary in southern Indiana so been through Terre Haute lots of times, nice little city. He could drive up to Cleveland behind the storm and maybe explore the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Someone I work with said French Lick is about an hour away. 😉 I love the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame idea! You must be a Jesuit. 😉

How's your son doing? I don't know why I thought he was flying in, maybe just too late at night for me lol? Hopefully he's safely on his way home. Thanks, ALL!!! ❤️ LATE last night He decided to stay in Terre Haute for the night. He’s now trying to figure how far East he can get today or tomorrow. It’s looking like he could get to Pittsburgh without too much trouble. We’re trying to avoid getting him stranded on a Pennsylvania highway — remember last year or two ago when hundreds were stranded outside Chambersburg for days? 😱. We’re also weighing the pros and cons of having him come up 95 through New York and New Jersey rather than risk poor conditions through the Poconos. Timing is everything in life. 😂 By Friday, the sun will be out and the roads cleared. In the meantime, he gets to explore an area he would have otherwise just driven by. You’ve got to find your adventures where they appear. I’m trying to convince him to go find Larry Bird’s house. 😂

Does anyone know if the area around the airport is reasonably safe?

YDS is en route home. The winter storm ahead of him is worsening and so he will have to wait it out a day or two in the Indianapolis area.
Can anyone recommend safe areas around Indy to stay and/or areas a young adult traveling alone should avoid?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!!

/photo/1Where are all my fellow allergy peeps? chiver78@wvugurl26 I also read somewhere that it is the propylene glycol that caused the allergic reactions to the Pfizer vaccine in the UK. Not sure how they figured that out so quickly.

I read that yesterday. Such a powerful article, but, sadly, the folks who don’t believe the virus is real still won’t care. I went to a Whole Foods yesterday— as we all know, a progressive, health conscious, grocery chain — in a progressive suburb of Boston. In my short time in the store, I had to ask 3 different customers to put their mask on or to put it on correctly. One was shopping while regularly pulling off her mask to drink from her travel mug. WTF? I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. I might not go back until this is all over. I’m betting mask compliance is better at the “commoners” grocery chain. (SMDH) I don't have fond memories of the customers at a different flavor higher-priced grocery store a little farther west down the same road in the same town, for similar issues of entitled obliviousness. I'm not sure how convenient it is for you to get down to the one near the college, but that location was always saner to me. well, except during the lunch rush with the hot bar and service stations. speaking of those, it will be interesting to see what becomes of that style of sales. their offerings were certainly tasty and I liked being able to build my own plate, but it's going to be a long time before I'm comfortable patronizing a self-serve buffet. No more hot bar. It’s all pre-packaged now. Even bakery items are in plastic packaging.
