Both kids Universities are completely virtual after thanksgiving. Sons is mostly all anyway and heโs home. Daughter is home at least 2 months. Then we see. How will you integrate DD into your house when she comes home? Testing? Masks? Quarantine?

I will answer as best I can. But I have no idea either. I have not seen my mother since early this year, my oldest son since march, my youngest since August, my middle since September. I work in as high a risk area as you can imagine. For both my wife and me, if I do not get to see the 2 youngest, we will both have worsening in our mental health. We are both healthcare workers, and are being careful. My middle one is now working at home, and s generally being careful, and I think he is concerned enough about our health that he is being somewhat careful. My youngest is being tested weekly at school and will test before coming home. School is virtual, and it seems cases have been under control. If possible, I would test my middle one, knowing its limitations. Oldest is a surgical resident, not sure when we will see him again. We will not be interacting with anyone else. Will not likely be doing any activities out of the house. Youngest will be home till January. Seeing my kids is a risk I am willing to take. They know that many activities are off limits once they are home, and I think they will try to decrease their risk before coming. More confident about youngest, but am hopeful. Not sure that helps. Situation sucks all around Iโve read your posts long enough to know you werenโt fishing for this, but I MUST say, if I havenโt said it recently: thank you for ALL you have done, do, and will do. I can only imagine the emotional and physical toll all of this is taking on medical folks. Please know that weโve only gotten this far in this unimaginable crisis because of your efforts and sacrifices and creativity and perseverance and courage. Please โ when you, your DW, your oldest, and your colleagues are losing faith โ let them know that there ARE people who see their bravery and commitment and ARE forever grateful. And, I agree, you and your DW DO need to see your kids. When it gets down to it, you are fighting this uphill Armageddon for THEM. I am glad to hear you will have at least 2 of them home and will have some youthful, seemingly indomitable, energy around you during the coming weeks and months. I know youโre here in the Northeast somewhere, and I hate to press you while the numbers here are skyrocketing again, but can I ask how you will integrate your kids into the house upon their return? Our kids sound similar in that they know they will be somewhat housebound once home, but what will the first few days look like in your house? Testing? Quarantines in their individual rooms? Masks on inside the house?

Yabbut...what's gonna happen with DGF's grandmother while they're away? Is she going to be all alone? How does she feel about their leaving for "Thanksgiving/awhile"? Do you live so far away that they will have to fly to get there or spend more than a day driving? Flying or an overnight stay in a hotel would put me off. I just don't know. I do know that I'm a gramma, and when DD/DSIL were gone for a long weekend during the summer, and I was here alone and still having to SIP, it was beyond dreary. I got very depressed and was only alone for five days. DGFโs grandmother will not be totally alone as you were (Iโm sorry that they left you so isolated.). She is 64, still drives, has a daughter and a son and 2 other grandkids and siblings and friends in the area. They โvisitโ with each other occasionally outside, from a distance (Based upon ODSโ comments and after having met the grandmother, I am completely convinced she does all of her โvisitingโ as safely as possible). The trip home would be driving โ 8 hours on a good day. Weโve all driven the route enough to know where to stop to pee and get gas. DH and I even chose to pee in the woods a couple of times. ๐. No hotel stay necessary.

I'm starting this thread on YM because of the Pandemic thread and because many who post here work in medicine, medical research, pharma, etc.
ODS, a college senior taking only remote classes, is living out of state with his DGF's family. His classes and finals end before Thanksgiving. They have been sheltering in place with DGF's grandmother since the beginning of March. The 3 of them believe in Science, believe that the pandemic is real and is really deadly, venture out of their home only when necessary, are compliant mask-wearers/hand-sanitizer users/hand-washers, etc. DH and I successfully and safely visited the 3 of them a couple of weeks ago -- outside, from a safe distance, wearing masks unless eating or drinking, sleeping elsewhere, etc. All of us -- ODS, his DGF, his DGF's family, DH and I -- are closely following the numbers and are following all of the Science-based guidelines and state mandates -- so knowledgeable about the current state of the pandemic and state and Federal responses to it.
About an hour ago, ODS called to ask if he and DGF could come home to Massachusetts for Thanksgiving/a while.
With that background, I am here to ask what other folks are doing, or recommending, as protocol for college kids to safely return home at the end of their respective semesters?
The CDC is advising us all to stay home for the holidays this year and to celebrate only with those already living in our homes.
Yesterday, Massachusetts resumed its prior travel restrictions again requiring those coming in to the state from 47 other states to quarantine for 14 days or arrive with a negative Covid test administered within 72 hours of arrival to the state.
ODS is in a grey area given that he does not need to vacate a college dorm for Winter Break. But it does raise the question: what are those of you with college kids living on campus doing to bring your kids home in the next few weeks safely?
Do you plan to have your kids test before they leave campus? Will you have them tested when they arrive home? But Covid can take up to 10 days to manifest, correct? Is testing useful and/or effective in this case?
Do you plan to have your college kid quarantine in his or her room for several days (with or without testing)? If so, for how long?
Do you plan for everyone in the home to wear masks at all times? If so, for how many days?
Does anyone in the home work outside the home and have the potential to bring the virus home from work? How do you address that risk when the household size increases when a college kid (or two) comes home for a couple of months?
Let's use this thread to brainstorm how to bring college kids (yours, MAYBE mine, maybe extended family's, maybe neighbor's, maybe co-workers', etc.) home SAFELY for everyone in the household.
Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions? Fears? Hopes?

Massachusetts crossed the dreaded 10,000 mark for Covid deaths this week. Positive tests per day are starting to hover at 2,500+ again. Hospitalizations are at 600 or so, with less than 100 in the ICU, but those numbers will start to increase soon.
Iโm also sad that Maine is now effectively closing its borders to Massachusetts folks again. Iโm tempted to make one last day trip up tomorrow to binge on takeout Elevation Burgers and takeout Holy Donuts, but even that seems unwise.
Be well, everyone!! ๐๐ค

Dammit,ย irishpad! I'm gonna tell you one more time. It's not "Upper." It's " Yooper." Yooper. Repeat after me: Yooper. Okay. Now say it all by yourself: Yooper. Natives of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are known as Yoopers. Natives of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan are known as Trolls. Next time youโre confused, think of it as the Upper Peninsula (UP), thus yooper. Being a troll myself (because I live under the Mackinac Bridge), we see Canada as our emergency escape route when the rest of the country starts to move here. Fun Fact About GRG: I did the Mackinac Bridge Walk one year. Me and 100,000 of my best friends. ๐. It is definitely worth the time and effort for anyone considering it โ a very unique event. So, was I a Yooper for a brief moment when I got off the school bus on the north side of the bridge before starting the southbound walk? ๐๐

Last night on 60 Minutes, they interviewed the general charged with distributing the vaccine once itโs approved. They only have 50k doses to work with right now. Even if the FDA approval came through today, most of us wonโt see a vaccine until well after this โdark winterโ, so Iโm not seeing any reason to get excited. Iโm still very worried and very scared. I have never heard a responsible projection of mass vaccination starting earlier than April 2021. I heard summer 2021 for having critical vaccinations done, but more often fall/winter. Maybe people are confused by the term "having a vaccine" versus "having a significant portion of the public vaccinated". Yup. And, the vaccine takes 2 doses, several weeks apart, to be effective. I hope we donโt face similar โsuper virusโ issues like we do with unfinished antibiotics and bacteria when millions of yahoos donโt go back for their 2nd dose (assuming they even go in for a first!!) because, ya know, itโs all a hoax. The General was asked if he had sufficient hypodermic needles, alcohol swabs, etc. He answered that he did, but Iโm not clear if itโs for the first 50K doses or for any and every person who wants both vaccines. Iโm for seeing hypodermic needle shortages in our future...๐

Doctor son (voted for Biden) sent to family that Biden may announce entire country lockdown for 3-4 weeks Iโm sceptical that this will be accepted in many areas in country And what will this do to economy? Hmmm, what's worse, a quick, effective lockdown that helps tamp down the infection rate OR a long, drawn, out surge with other severe restrictions in place? I personally think a quick, total, lockdown will do less economic harm than a long, drawn-out, restrictive surge. And, frankly, the economy is already a mess. Massachusetts just implemented a curfew from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Restaurants and bars -- one of the most struggling industries -- must stop serving at 9:30. I think the shortened business day for the long haul will be harder than a planned, short, total lockdown. And even if the virus completely disappeared off of the face of the earth tomorrow we will be dealing with the economic affects of this mishandled pandemic for years. Years. There is going to be a tragic correction in the near future, I fear -- foreclosures, evictions, bankruptcies, repossessions, etc. are all looming. I'd rather "rip off the bandaid" and get back to safe rebuilding. JMHO. YMMV and likely will. P.S. I'm not sure how your DS voted is relevant. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Anarchists -- we're all facing the same tragic consequences from this mishandled pandemic.

It will just be DH and me this year. I just placed an order for an 8-10 pound turkey because DH insists on turkey (I personally would prefer a nice beef roast). Anyway, I'll make all of the sides and apple (for DH) and pumpkin (for me, although I do like apple, too) pies -- just in smaller quantities and sizes. Next year we'll have a crowd.

Can you imagine what his inauguration crowds are going to look like? DH and I think Biden will hold a virtual inauguration in wise deference to the pandemic. He's been calling Trump out for all of Trump's big rallies and Biden's been holding far smaller "drive-in" rallies, so I think the inauguration will look very different this time.

So no gracious acceptance: President Donald Trump responded to several news outlets calling the 2020 election for President-elect Joe Biden on Saturday with an inaccurate and desperate-seeming statement, claiming that his campaign will start โprosecuting our caseโ in court come Monday โ in what would effectively be an attempt to overrule the will of the American people.
โWe all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they donโt want the truth to be exposed,โ the president said in his statement. โJoe Biden has not been certified as the winner in any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts.โ
link I was watching CNN when it was released, I forgot who was speaking but they said they won't read it because it's full of inaccuracies and lies or something along those lines. I don't recall news outlets saying that before. Looks like maybe they are disengaging with trump finally? The mainstream press finally started showing they have some critical judgement on Thursday night when they cut away from Trump's "news conference" during the national evening news after only 3 minutes of Trump's delusional ranting about Biden stealing the election.

I scored a 5 cubic foot chest freezer online at Baronโs in Salem, New Hampshire. It took 5 weeks to come in, but that turned out to be much faster than the website originally predicted. I went with one that had a high rating on Consumer Reports: GE Model No. FCM5SKWW. that's a bit of a hike, but could be worth it for the price. I had gotten the last one for $40 on the local FB yard sale page. can I ask what you paid? I don't know the volume of my old unit, but have a general idea of dimensions More than it should have been, but not horrible: $289.99. I wanted a freezer with good reviews. It sucks to have a fully loaded freezer crap out on you and not to find out until everything is thawed and smelling...๐คข

GRG a/k/a goldenrulegirl How many people in your household? Please let us know when you've used up 104 rolls of TP. I, too, have PTSD, but mine's been diagnosed. I never felt the need to buy 104 rolls of TP 2. ๐ Unless one or both sons come home. But theyโre guys, they only use TP once per day. ๐

I keep a well-stocked pantry as a rule both for budgetary reasons and because New England is prone to both blizzards and hurricanes. I am a fan of Amy Dazcyzn of Tightwad Gazette fame who advocates following price cycles and then stocking up when an item hits its low point in the cycle. The pandemic, however, has pretty much put an end to that kind of shopping both because sales are now so infrequent and because of the shortages. Iโve been stocking up steadily this Fall, and aside from things like fresh milk and bananas, could eat reasonably healthy for quite a while at this point. I'm trying to remember what I need to stock up on, since it has been so long since I have operated normally. I have been having no trouble finding TP, paper towels, or Kleenex...but those limits. so basically, any time I walk into a store, I'm buying a package of at least the TP/PT. my Walmart order last week had included a 6pk that was shown as available when I ordered. they subbed three 2pks, which had I gone in, wouldn't have been allowed. I figure that I'm going to lay low most of the winter in general, it won't go to waste. I wouldn't mind finding a small chest freezer, like I had in the last house and sold to my buyer. the kitchen fridge here has a weird freezer layout, and large stuff doesn't work well in it. I scored a 5 cubic foot chest freezer online at Baronโs in Salem, New Hampshire. It took 5 weeks to come in, but that turned out to be much faster than the website originally predicted. So, I apparently had some undiagnosed PTSD from March that revealed itself in this past weekendโs grocery shopping. I clearly have unacknowledged anxiety about my toilet paper supply. Somehow, shopping at 4 different places, I managed to accumulate...104 rolls of TP!!!! Thatโs more than we use in a year!!! ๐๐
Maybe I can use it to barter for other things if the poop hits the fan this Winter...

Meh. I just soak beans at least overnight. I hate single-purpose gadgets. Iโm in a Facebook group of @200k members and the latest big discussion is on rice cookers. Iโve only ever cooked rice (brown, wild, jasmine, etc.) in a stainless steel pot with a cover. Why would I need a separate appliance? Or, maybe Iโve been cooking rice wrong my whole life...?

This year, it will be just DH and me. ODS is at college, and YDS is in flyover country. My siblings would open their homes to us, but most of them arenโt as conscientious as we are about exposure, so not this year. DH will want turkey and all if the trimmings, me not so much, but weโll go the traditional route just this once. ๐

I got a HUGE grocery order delivered at 7:30 this morning โ meat and produce and some frozen fruits and veggies. I have an order from a different store coming tonight with dry goods (crackers, etc.). I have TP and Kleenex on its way from Amazon, and laundry detergent coming from Target. I also have an order of dried fruits and seeds coming from Gerbs. We just needs some beer and maybe a couple more cases of dog food and weโre good for whatever (blizzards, hurricanes, lockdowns, civil unrest, boredom, kids come home, etc.).
I feel better prepared than I did in March because Iโve been expecting a second wave/misbehavior, etc. so Iโm definitely less stressed. Just want to stay healthy. ๐ค๐

Yep. RIT switched from Green to Yellow two weeks ago due to wastewater monitoring near Greek Housing. There has been an uptick in cases, but small, 1 a day maybe in the last week, average, (its at 10 in the last 14 days, 23 since school started) ... nothing geometric or exponential. Seems they managed to contain it?ย Ok.. now itโs at 17 for the last 14 days... so, maybe I need to wait and see... ugh. They wonโt update till Monday, that could be a jump...ย Daughter got an email saying they are between yellow and orange and there was a list of new restrictions on campus.ย ODSโ campus bumped up to yellow with 2 confirmed cases and several reports to the college wellness center of students not wearing masks indoors and gathering in groups indoors. I understand the need to mask and socially distance, but I would hate to see the kids start turning on and ratting each other out. That alone could cause all kinds of problems, too. ๐ณ

DH has been doing the grocery shopping for a couple of months now.ย He's been telling me for a couple of weeks now that he wants to stock up on TP, etc. before the election.ย I don't really understand why he's waiting though.ย We'll eventually use everything he buys, if he does stock up this weekend.ย ย Tell him to buy some with a long expiration date. ๐๐
