When I was 18 and stupid I couldn't understand what the big deal was about gay marriage. I mean they had civil unions so what is the big deal?
A friend pointed out of course I don't get it there is no question about me marrying a man. And please stop trying as a straight person to explain why gay people shouldn't complain about not being allowed the same privilege I got just by being.straight.
That shut me up. Since then I've learned to take a back seat. I'm not gay, I'm not a POC, I am not a Muslim.
I will never get it. It's my job to let the people that do share their voices instead of trying to yell over them.
I share some common experiences as a woman with a lesbian or woman of color but to say it's equivalent dismisses the additional discrimination they face that I don't.
They have the right to discuss their issues without me butting in insisting we're the same and how dare they not talk about my white women issues too.

I had this argument with a friend about statues coming down this week.
She was ok with statues coming down but said she really didn't understand how a statue everyone ignores was a real problem.
I was like, just because you feel you can ignore it doesn't mean someone else doesn't see racist oppressive eyes every time they pass it. You don't get to tell other people what they feel when they pass a statue that was erected as a reminder of slavery. The very ability to ignore it is privilege.
Some people elsewhere were arguing about Thomas Jefferson's statue and I said that's not my call either. I can respect Jefferson's presidency, his bible and his Declaration while still recognizing him as a flawed human being... but if what you see in that statue is Sally Hemmings and children kept as slaves... you get to make that call, not me. And frankly, maybe we all need that reminder, but no one needs a statue.

This whole thread is depressing. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 80’s and can get the song “people are people” out of my head. Dislike people for what they do, not what they look like. Idiots come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I know profiling is common, we all do it, just like judging people by their looks. I’m an ugly, middle aged white guy who looks like a biker on parole. I know I’ve been judged, but the reality is I just don’t care. I know the real me, am confident in who I am and don’t need to impress anyone. It's white priviledge that you can just ignore those that judge you. It's white priviledge that you can choose to dress like a gang member, proven violent criminals, and be safer than a black man in a business suit.

I promote feminism a lot. I don't need to do it on their dime. They have worked hard to get this issue in our collective conciousness right now. I support every gain they can achieve. ETA - LOL this feels like I am still making it about me. I really don't intend it that way. I am trying to use my white voice in a respectful way.

Every single time I see this thread, I keep thinking that I really should go call my cousin Karen and hope people aren't being assholes to her. She's a cool person.

I do hope the woman in the video has been permanently banned from all these food chain's stores. No excuse for her conduct.

The woman called the 'N' word in this video made her point long before it escalated to the extent that it did. Both are at fault in this one, just at different times.

When I saw that video I said “doesn’t she know that when someone says ‘DO IT AGAIN!’ it would probably be in your best interest to NOT do it again?”. I mean she told her what would happen if she called her that again. And when the lady wouldn’t let her go, she told her what she would do if she didn’t let her go. And she did it. Clearly this was somebody who meant what tf she said. Part of me, the nonviolent part, wants to feel bad that Karen got mollywhopped like that, but mostly I just hope the other lady didn’t get in too much trouble.

I read the other day this 'Karen' thing started back in 2005 and somehow a haircut Kate Gosselin (of the multiple kids fame) got back then was part of it. Notice the haircut on the doll.

I remember making fun of the haircut (and Kate G - what a weirdo). And I do remember both Karen and Susan being used while doing it. But it sure has picked up some steam over the last few months.

Talking about "Karens" ............. I'm seeing a lot of 'Kevins' also ........ Members of the 'no one is going to tell me what to do' club.
I'm seeing it a lot in the gyms and health clubs. Gotta flex my muscles in the early morning hours on a machine instead of taking a walk or jog around the block

Well, not only is the color wrong...I don't have enough hair for that cut. I'd look like a bald eagle in the back where it's all separated in different directions.

I have been told by several folks that women acting badly are not going to be called Karen anymore. The new trend is to call them 'Ivanka'or 'Ivankas'.

A San Francisco lawmaker is proposing a 'CAREN Act' to punish people who make racially-charged 911 callsA Black San Francisco lawmaker is proposing the Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies (CAREN) Act to punish those who make racist 911 calls. "Racist 911 calls are unacceptable," Shamann Walton, a member of the San Francisco board of supervisors, tweeted Tuesday. "That's why I'm introducing the CAREN Act at today's SF Board of Supervisors meeting." The Act "will make it unlawful for an individual to contact law enforcement solely to discriminate on the basis of a person's race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity," the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing the draft law. The legislation would update the San Francisco Police Code to make it illegal to "fabricate false racially biased emergency reports." Because, apparently, there are a lot of laws that someone thinks needs a reboot. So many laws cross over other laws. Maybe they can lobby for the suggested punishment to be harsher than filing a false report. Maybe the technicalities of the law makes it easier to charge, or easier to prove. Maybe making a 911 call isn't a full fledge report filing. Maybe it just needs some marketing so stupid people will be afraid. I'm sure some lawyer could give you a reason this one has more teeth than the already existing laws.
