I thought there was a campaign to educate us all on how horrible it is to refer to this type of female as “Karen”.
I saw posts on FB about it, but never bothered to click and read.
I have ideas for other “names” if “Karen” is taboo, but they mostly include profanity.
Seriously though, these Karens and their male counterparts seem to really think they can say anything to you and you are supposed to just take it. Or treat you any kind of way, and you are suppose to just take it. I’ve run into that kind myself, that thinks you’re supposed to bow down to them, and the bottom line is..... Biiiiiiiitch.... you gon fuck around and get mollywhopped playing with me.
I embarrass easily, and the last thing I ever want is to be the center of attention, but I have caused scenes before in public, with Karens and/or their spouses.
And I’m just as nice and cordial IRL as I (mostly) am here, I mind my business and don’t bother anybody that’s not bothering me, but I’m also simmering around an 8 most of the time lately, and anybody that gets out of pocket can catch this smoke.

Also, it amuses me how so many of these people are sooooo apologetic after the public tracks them down and lets their employers or universities know what kind of person they really are. Not only are we supposed to believe the lame apologies, but we’re also supposed to feel bad for them when they say their lives have been turned upside down, usually because people on the internet are getting in their ass and they got fired or kicked out of school. NO SYMPATHY HERE.
If they’re too stupid to figure out what’s likely to happen if they are being recorded or they post some ignorant shit on the internet themselves, for all the world to see, idk what to tell them. And I definitely don’t feel sorry for them when their shit hits the fan. If you had just acted like a normal, decent human being instead of a racist asshole, you wouldn’t have these problems.

I work in a well known fabric store . We had a pretty regular customer who was just a nightmare. She came in one day to get fabric , was at the counter and apparently went off on one of the girls there . This girl is Armenian and speaks with an accent . Told her she needed to learn to speak English correctly, go back where she came from , etc . I hadn’t heard any of this as I was working up front at the register . Customer comes to check out and starts complaining to me thinking I’m going to agree with her 🤷♀️, I dunno why , maybe cuz I’m whiter than white , but whatever . Starts saying I need to fire this girl , she must be an illegal , can’t speak English , this is America , etc . I just looked at the customer and told her she was being rude and racist and to get out of “my” store and she wasn’t welcome to come back . I told my manager later what I did / said in case customer complained . I told her if I get fired for it , so what .
She never did come back , so , yay me

We encountered one of those ladies when we were on vacation in Estes once.
I'm not sure where our server was from but she had an accent and struggled a bit with English. Instead of trying to pronounce the desserts she brought the board and had us point. Not an issue for us
Karen and her asshole husband Mr. Karen were just awful to her.the entire time. Made really rude comments about her speaking skills.
Proceeded to bitch at the manager about her.
My parents stood up for her. We'd seen everything go down since Mr and Mrs Karen were right next to us.
We also told the manager we'd had excellent service and were very happy with our server.
Karen looked like she was going to explode. So satisfying.

My Aunt S is a Karen. A card carrying, religious, bigoted, orange kool aid guzzling, racist Karen. It's just a matter of time before we see her in a video going viral. I fully believe that. She's been kicked out of stores, has accosted people in parking lots, she's even been kicked out of her church. There's going to come a day that I'm gonna have to decide if I'm gonna say "I can identify the lady in the video" because it's her.

I don't like using the name Karen for these people nor assuming they are blonde. I don't understand why we can't just use bigoted or entitled as adjectives for these people. I am sick of always labeling women as losers but never labeling men the same way. Its like some love to participate in dragging down women and leaving men alone. There are bigots of all genders, races, and creeds. They occur in countries all around the world. And sadly from what I read in Not Always Right they seem less prone to embarrassment and the best you can hope for is they stop coming back to your store or place of business. Men don't get even half of the bad names applied to women. There are no equivalents to dumb blondes, whores or now "Karen"s. At least for men when you call him a dick, he knows its referencing his anatomy not his name … and real life Richards can use Rich, Rick etc. to avoid the moniker Dick. What option is there for RL women who happened to be named Karen? I couldn't find the link from 2000 that gives a names popularity over the years in a graph. But I did find something for total name popularity. Karen is number 10 and Richard is number 7. www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decades/century.html

Interesting take on "Karens". www.cnn.com/2020/05/30/us/karen-meme-trnd/index.html A "Karen" is generally defined as someone who throws a tantrum at a Starbucks. Who asks to speak to the manager over the slightest inconvenience. Who uses tears to get what she wants. It's also someone who calls the police on black people for, say, asking that they leash their dog in Central Park.
The term has people divided. Some have said it's sexist. Others say it's a placeholder for speaking about the casual racism and privilege exhibited by some white women.

Being a karen sounds like so much work. No kidding. It has to be exhausting to be looking for offense everywhere you go. I mean what was so offensive about a waitress bringing you the dessert board and having you point? You aren't owed people speaking perfect English to you everywhere you go. They are probably the same people that while guests in another country refuse to learn any of the native language and instead speak English LOUDLY AND SLOWLY because that totally helps.

My stepmom was named Karen. She was the nicest and most gregarious person I knew. Yes being a red head she also had a temper, but a really long fuse.
I personally would love for people to call women who treat other people like trash, Trash. Trashy is exactly how that privileged person is acting. Don't give them a actual name give them a attitude correct name.

Not being white, they are automatically excluded from the usage of the name. Being born in 1960 I know a lot of women named Karen, various spellings and none of them are like this. The 1960s were a time of trying to change for the better both for women and blacks. I hate the assumption that just because I was born then I must be a racist jerk. My parents were born in the early 1930s and weren't racist jerks either. In spite of all the crap that went on during Obama's campaigns I personally never saw the mention of Chads. I guess I am disconnected because I didn't even know Becky was supposed to be a derogatory term. I rarely hear it. When I read about Barbeque Becky I thought it was chosen simply because it rhymed. These are Trump tactics. Is that how blacks and others plan to heal the world? By name calling? Maybe I am old. In my world archetypes are things like Priest, Warrior, and Artist. They aren't people names.

We have a very close friend who is from New Zealand. The c word was his automatic go to. I admittedly drop f-bombs like I have a high daily quota to meet, but his c word use was horrifying. Said it everywhere in any normal conversation. It took us YEARS to break him of it.

My mom was a huge Karen. Insulting to wait staff and retailers, convinced people her color, of her nationality and religious background, were the culmination of human evolution.
I think all Karen’s must be narcissistic. The two seem related.

That and the word they use for cigarettes. That's jarring if you forget for a second they don't use the term the same way.

Being a karen sounds like so much work. But they usually get "rewarded" in some way by society (they get their way because people back down). That's why it's a go to form of interaction. It's not a lot of work - it gets results.

Well, let me just speak for myself, I don’t assume anyone is racist, until they show me they are racist, regardless of their age. 2. I *think* Becky came from the lyrics of a Beyoncé song, “... call Becky with the good hair...” . IIRC, people thought it was a reference to whoever Jay Z had been cheating with. 3. Is that how Blacks and others plan to heal the world? By name calling? I don’t believe it’s on Black people to heal the world. It’s enough work trying to heal our own wounds. If I beat the crap out of you for no good reason, do you think it would be your responsibility to ignore your bruised and battered body and the care it needs, and try to make things right with me? Or would it be my responsibility to try to make things right? I’m going to quote the late Tupac Shakur again “I was given this world, I didn’t make it”. Black people didn’t ask to be treated as we have been. Why anybody would think it’s OUR responsibility, the injured parties, to try to fix situations we didn’t cause, baffles me. Make that make sense to me, please.

I was at a part where a character lit the F word and my brain was like "Whoa that got dark fast....oh that means cigarettes in Britain. Now the sentence makes more sense."

Being a karen sounds like so much work. I dunno, most of them seem to find it pretty easy to spew venom. most of the time, i find it easier to be kind, or at least neutral. Not that I'm above throwing in some snarky remark, but that's usually about as far as it goes. I don't want to fight, i don't want clashes, I just want to live my life calmly and pleasantly.

We just do it to them for different reasons. For me giving it a single name is just easier and faster. And as a white woman I can tell you it isn't very traumatizing. I have actually used it in situations where I needed to assert myself, as in"you better take care of this or my inner Karen is going to come out" ETA - the version I have heard about is demanding and difficult, not bigoted or racist. I haven't threatened to get racist with anyone.

I haven't threatened to get racist with anyone. We do it with men on a much lesser scale. When have you heard someone say so and so is being such a Bubba? Are there hashtags #NYBubba? I was told once Karen was allegedly a meme of demanding women in their 40s wearing tracksuits. Why the name Karen was chosen escapes me. Now some people have decided Karen should mean assholes like Amy, 41, from Canada actively showing how well she lies and how willing she is to use race to trash a black man just because she doesn't want to leash her dog. Which she is required to according to signs. Maybe as a white woman not named Karen, this doesn't bug you much. What if you were named Karen? Would you embrace it knowing Donald Trump has been called your first name? Would you feel this is a great way to assert yourself with your name working with more black people than any other race? Given the current climate would you feel unconcerned using your name while searching for jobs? People do get discriminated because of their names. Bubba might have to try much harder with more firms to get a job on Wall Street. There are people who send out resumes with different names with the same resume for jobs who have shown how Lashonda has a harder time than Ashley getting certain jobs and how having female names get you less interest than males ones. For fun reading, here's an article I found. The guy is wrong about the popularity of the name though. It peaked in the 1950s, possibly 1955 or 1957. I don't remember. I did a bunch of research on that name and some others, and I know Karen as a popular name was already in its decline from its high before 1960. www.chron.com/news/article/How-Karen-went-from-a-popular-baby-name-to-a-15335293.php
