I have read several articles in the past of black men driving expensive cars being stopped by the police under the officer's assumption that no black man could be successful enough in life to drive such an expensive car. Pretty sad. Or they have to be dealing drugs to own a car like that. I've heard that soooooo many times. And for anyone who doesn't understand "white privilege.... The first time I saw this video, a couple years ago, it brought tears to my eyes, and I wanted to cry, cry, cry. My reaction wasn’t much different when I watched it in your post. It upsets my nerves so much.

I have read several articles in the past of black men driving expensive cars being stopped by the police under the officer's assumption that no black man could be successful enough in life to drive such an expensive car. Pretty sad. Back when I was in my 20’s, a guy that graduated from high school with me moved back home after graduating college and working a few years in another state. His job paid for him to relocate back to his hometown to work in their office here. He had a 700series BMW, and was coming over to my house when he was pulled over by the police. He ended up with 4 or 5 cars on the scene, they made him lay spread eagle on the sidewalk while they searched his car. They didn’t find anything, but they still took the couple hundred dollars of cash he had on him. He was SO angry, and understandably humiliated. I clearly remember how upset he was when he called me. He was able to afford the car because he was an educated, single man with a good job. I guess because he was a young Black man, the assumption was that he had to be a criminal because of the luxury car. I use to work for a bank, 7pm to 3:30am. I had a coworker that had recently moved here from California, after a split from her husband. She had an Altima, which isn’t really an expensive car, but it was tricked out and still had California tags. She came to work many days frustrated and upset because the same cop use to pull her over on her way to work. He would ask her the same stupid questions each time about where she was going (to fucking WORK) and would make her lay spread eagle on the sidewalk while he searched her car EVERY time. It was harassment, pure and simple. We had to help her figure out another route to work (remember, she was new to the area), so she could try to avoid that asshole cop. I have a coworker now that has a red Corvette. She’s been pulled over for speeding, when there were other cars on the same highway, driving even faster. But the one time she questioned it, it seemed the officer’s problem had more to do with hating on the Corvette than the driver. He admitted he’d pulled her over instead of the faster cars, because she was driving a Corvette. So that one may have been more about the car than her race. But still..... Really?! All good examples of Driving While Black.

He didn't deserve to be treated that way, however the BMW 7 series is not just a luxury car. Its the top of the line and usually considered an executive car. Its not that common, especially in recent years, with yearly sales in 2005 under 24,000 cars. Current model price range is roughly $86K to $156K.
Its uncommon to see 7 series driven by anyone in their 20s.

The reality is someone with a good job can't afford that car. Only someone doing exceptionally well, like in the top 10% of earners can afford that car. Its historical rep and demographic is execs in their 50s and 60s. Reality. I know some sales people can get jobs like that in their 20s, but again those aren't "good" jobs those are amazingly well paid ones.

Profiling for any reason is not ok. Says the poster that profiles women as Karens. Showing people who treat others differently because of the color of their skin is not profiling. Nor is calling white people out on using their white privilege to harass others instead of minding their own business. I didn't come up with the name Karen for these people. I do think that since you're so butt hurt over the whole Karen thing that you must be one. You'll never understand what we POC have to deal with every day being profiled or harassed simply because of the color of our skin. POC die because of people like you.

Whether the owner paid cash for said car or is in debt up to their eyeballs is nobody's business but theirs. The guy was pulled over for driving while black. I've been pulled over for driving while brown. It's not ok.

I've been profiled all my life. I can't hide the fact I am a white woman any more than POC can hide their skin color. I was told by one engineering TA that I should quit school and go down south and find a nice guy to marry. Now since I have a crap job I was told by one young black woman white women couldn't be poor because they are white. And there have been several black women bosses at the front desk. One did her best to get rid of all the non black women and only hired black women. I won't apply to a better position there because the current DON is very racist and ageist. She only hires black women younger than her in that position. After one of her favorite lackeys left I found she even has a strong preference of which country they are from. She did recently hire a white person for a position, but I think she set her up for failure so she could tick the box of hired a white person and get rid of her quickly as well. That woman resigned as did the newest young black woman. And no I don't fully understand, but I've had to watch myself and POC fight similar battles. And for the most part black men have been far more successful at it, in large part because they are men and black. Men from China, Japan and similar have had similar issues as I in IT because we come from non forceful cultural conditioning. Men from India fare well too because of their culture and gender. No one has died because of me. Nor do I encourage racist behavior from patients or residents where I work. Turns out it is not easy to get racist white men with dementia to stop saying or shouting n_____ at anyone. But yes, I do not like my real name being used as a slur. And you aren't anti-profiling if you use it. I personally would prefer using the term EB, entitled bigot, as it is not linked to gender nor race. I do wonder though if some POC use the term Karen simply because they know white women are second class citizens. They feel comfortable going after white women EBs because they aren't white male EBs who are at the top of the pecking order.

At least 3 people that I know have owned one. None of them are drug dealers, and 1 of them actually works with me.

It's not right, but it's most definitely not the same as being pulled over or approached in an inappropriate way by a civilian for _____ing while black. Putting yourself in the place of POC or saying that you fight similar battles is wrong and quite frankly offensive. I hardly think that the black men who died from police brutality consider it a success. Shame on you. If you have a crap job, stop complaining and get a better one. Don't worry about advancing at a job with a racist boss, move on. If you're good at what you do, it shouldn't be hard. If not, maybe it's not your race that's the reason you're not advancing. No one is in charge of your life other than you. And no, POC don't look at white women as second class people. More we're looked down on my white men and women as second class citizens. Again, you'll never understand. Perhaps you should take some time to educate yourself.

Here's my code of ethics. I didn't create the word n_____, and because it is a bad word, I never apply to people in person or electronically (online, email, social media, etc.) I didn't create nor change the meaning of the name Karen and I have no desire to be part of its debasement. I can call out bad behavior without using it, and I think using it almost gives some of those EBs a pass as their real name apparently becomes unimportant.
One of the original meanings of the name Karen is pure one. (Yeah, not something most would pick)
Reddit decided it could be repurposed to mean your XW who is taking the kids.
Some Millenial decided it was a great name to mock white mothers in their 40s who liked to do entitled complaining at stores, etc.
Then I guess a POC decided it would be a great name to use to mock white women EBs.
So weird that I am not grateful, eh?

I tend to think of that as top 40 to 20% territory. I travel in lesser circles. I know no one who has owned one, just 3s, and 5s. Its not a drug dealer car. The police were obviously being assholes. Either it is stolen or its not. Ask for license and registration and then move on.

Just as a man would not know what I experience as a woman. I still massively benefit from being white and straight. To claim that my experience is the same as theirs smacks of privilege. We may share common experiences as women but I cannot and will never get the rest given I got the other two going for me.

No, that woman threatened to call the police when she was the one doing something wrong. If someone I didn't recognise was putting political messages up on property in my neighbourhood I can see myself questioning it. No matter what the message was. I hope my neighbours would do it for me if it was my house. It's like being asked for id at the bank. A pain in the ass when it's me, but I'm sure glad they are doing it if someone else is trying to access my account. Then don't go about it by asking the person if they are the property owner.... Introduce yourself, talk to them like a human and gently inquire when they moved into the neighborhood since you hadn't seen them before. There are better ways to approach people rather than calling the police. Yep. I left a note under the windshield of the truck that was blocking our access to the garage. It's an alley. The first 2 times we let it slide, figuring they were moving in. the 3rd time I left a note, politely asking them to park differently so we could get in and out of our garage without hitting their truck. And I signed it with DH's and my first names. A couple of weeks later, I met them and then introduced DH. It's a shortish term housing solution by their insurance company while their house is repaired after a fire. Everyone's cordial, on the rare times we run into each other. And the problem was solved.
I did think, for about 10 seconds, to not leave our names on the note but as the garages are directly across from one another, it's blatantly obvious who left the note.

Its disappointing my experience cannot be seen as just another data point versus being unworthy of even being shared.

This is not a social media obsession, it is what POC have had to deal with for years and is now brought to light more often since we all now have cell phones with cameras that those years ago didn't have. Also, nobody said that your experiences were unworthy of being shared, just that you can't empathize with something you've never experienced. You really don't get it, do you?

Racism, sexism, homophobia, islamophobia, anti-semitism etc all have common threads and themes. But right now the conversation is about racism. In particular racism towards African Americans in our country.
Does not mean that my experience with sexism is invalid it means that right now my experiences need to sit down and take a back seat. I can't relate to racism because I am white. Trying to butt in as a white woman right now and get them to acknowledge my story is yet another way white people try to override the conversation. It is not their job to turn the conversation in a way that makes me feel validated and that I matter too.
Me taking a back seat does not lessen the issue of sexism. It does not mean that sexism does not need to be addressed. It means I am self aware enough to realize it's not about ME right now. It means I'm self aware enough to recognize I need to sit down, shut up and let the people who DO get it talk in this moment.
POC have a right to address their own issues without being accused of being non-inclusive because they don't discuss your issues at the same time.

Thank you so much for explaining that so clearly. It gets damn frustrating that so often in these conversations, some white person tries to make it about them and their struggles, not just here, almost everywhere. It feels dismissive. And they rarely seem to understand why they get the reactions they do.

Yesterday on Facebook I saw a picture of a little black boy who had a basketball in his hands, shooting baskets in his driveway. When the photo was taken, he was kind of hiding behind a jeep because he'd seen a cop car was driving down the street. He was only 10 years old, but he already knew that it's better to not be seen. One of the commenters, who appeared to be white, mentioned it was sad that he had been taught to do that. My response was that he wouldn't *need* to tell his children that not all cops can be trusted, because he has white privilege. A lot of others said the same type of thing. He then stated he was mixed, which, from the 1/2 of his face showing in his profile photo, you would never be able to tell. In my opinion, even though he's mixed, if he looks that white he's still got that privilege. And unless his spouse is black, his kids absolutely would too. Regardless, it is indeed sad that he's learned about racism that young. It has to change.

And if I claimed anywhere in my post my experience was the same as theirs, I would agree with you. But I didn't. My life is not your lives. If we really are to build a better society we have to look at all of it. Not just fixate on the current social media obsession. Racism exists everywhere and its a mindset not a skin color. Its disappointing my experience cannot be seen as just another data point versus being unworthy of even being shared. And no I don't fully understand, but I've had to watch myself and POC fight similar battles. Yeah, we must have misunderstood the part of your post where you said you were profiled like POC are. This is not a social media obsession, it is what POC have had to deal with for years and is now brought to light more often since we all now have cell phones with cameras that those years ago didn't have. Also, nobody said that your experiences were unworthy of being shared, just that you can't empathize with something you've never experienced. You really don't get it, do you? was it Will Smith that said that racism isn't new, it's that we're filming it now?
