You can opt out of the game now if you want Shane, details are in the zombie game thread. I forget the instructions since I want to play

I don't want to opt out. But I've never had immunity. I want to be one of the survivors, darn it! But since that's not happening, I'm biting you.

I think I'm dead again. Just leave for a 2 hour conference call and someone kills you.

Ok, I got the respawn button again. It said I don't know how it happened but you're not a Zombie anymore. I had been immune so I don't think I actually became a Zombie this time. Mods, can we confirm that it's a canned, 1 size fits all message when you respawn?

The weekend went well. We bought him some clothes (he had one pair of jeans and 3 shirts, he now has 3 pairs of jeans and 9 or 10 shirts), got him a halloween costume, and went to the library. He survived meeting Pop Tart's sister and her mom.
When he's thinking about it, he assumes he's going to go live with his friend this week. When he's not thinking about it, he asks us for permission to go to the school dance (and I just realized I forgot to give him money for tickets) this Friday.
We do family counseling tomorrow night. C will take him to a local charity (specifically for foster kids) to get him some more clothes on Thursday (or at least that's the current plan). He wants to hang out with a friend after school one day, but we don't know the transportation situation yet, so that's hard to answer.
That's pretty much it.

No word from the social worker on the friend situation then?
I'm glad things seem to be going well. Sounds like he's getting more comfortable with you guys.

No, no word about the friend. But we certainly weren't expecting that over the weekend. I would expect, if we hear something, that it will be mid-week.

Here's what I know.
Last Friday fingerprints were done for the friend's family. SW had to wait on those results. Depending on what those were, she could take them to her boss and the area director for a waiver to let Mini Wheat move in with friend's family before an official foster license was given. However, her suspicion was that they would not approve a waiver in this case and that a decision will not be made until a homestudy is completed. (Homestudies can take anywhere between a couple of weeks- if you pay for an expedited one and are REALLY motivated, and a few months. There are all sorts of home improvement, locking cabinet type things that have to be done before you can pass a foster care license home study. In our case, due to delayed background checks and MIL's death during the process, our homestudy took us over a year. But I had friends who got their's completed in a few weeks.)
Since that email, we have not heard any more. So I don't even know if the fingerprint report has come in yet.
As a note to go along with all of this, our social worker, through our agency, has been on vacation since the Wednesday before Mini Wheat was placed with us, so she hasn't been involved in this at all yet. She is now back, and we'll have a phone call with her tomorrow. With her back, our information will get better and more timely, since that's her job. At the same time, there are some things we just won't know until they happen. No one can force the FBI to get back a fingerprint background check sooner than they are going to get it back to us. So in many cases, we just have to wait.
Mini Wheat does ask almost every night if we have heard more. And we keep having to tell him no, and remind him that these things take time. We don't have power to make them go faster, and neither does his social worker.

Shan, I'm curious ... do you have any idea of how eager the family is to take MW in?
ETA: That's interesting about the locked cabinets. We don't have guns but we don't have locked medical cabinets either. (Actually we did have one in the kids' bathroom when they were little, but it hasn't been locked for many years.)
How are the school runs going? Is that organization helping, or is it all on you / C? How are MW and PopTart doing together?

Shan, I'm curious ... do you have any idea of how eager the family is to take MW in? They have to be at least reasonably interested (my guess) or they wouldn't have gone through all the hassle of the fingerprinting, etc.

I haven't met the family. However, there didn't seem to be any indication on the SW's part that she thought they wouldn't follow through on the home study, just that she thought the home study would need to be completed.
But that is one of the things we're trying to prepare him for- that not everyone ends up able to complete the homestudy AND that not everyone who completes a homestudy is given a foster care license. There are many places in the process for someone to say no.

Answers to questions I realized I missed:
Pop Tart and Mini Wheat are doing fine. They get along well and enjoy doing some of the same things. Right now, they are both playing rock band.
Transportation: The transportation via cab is set up with the school. The school actually runs the program, so they provide it any time bussing is provided (like to get home after the school dance tomorrow night). First day, first driver found our house no problem. Second day, driver apparently drove around our neighborhood for 20 minutes, claiming he couldn't find our house (street number is in reflective stickers on the mailbox). Then he and Mini Wheat got caught in traffic and Mini Wheat was late for school. C gave them our phone number after that, and this morning the driver called, said he was at our house, C said "no you're not" and about a minute later guy actually found us. So it's going okay. C no longer has to pick him up every day, and social workers aren't getting up at 5am in order to come get him at our house and drive him to school.
edited to fix typos/correct you're. I should perhaps try less multi-tasking in the evenings. (I was getting our terrier to eat the last of his food, on the bed beside me, yelling out to the living room that after one last song, it was time for teeth & hair (bedtime ritual), typing this post, and assuring the beagle that I would get up and refill her water bowl in just a minute.)

Wow, this is all really complicated. Much more so, than I thought. Bless you and your family for taking this child/these children in. You're fabulous! You mentioned starting a new job. How's that going?

Yes, foster care is complicated. But if it's complicated for us adults who understand the world a bit better, think of how complicated it must seem to the kids.
Today we have a phone call with our social worker. On Thursday evening, a state SW/CHET intake specialist will be coming to the house to talk to us and Mini Wheat. She sent us some advance paperwork that we need to have filled out by the time she arrives.
As for my new job, it's going well. Finishing my 2nd week today, and I'm already involved in hiring someone, approving budget expenditures, and helping plan changes to our corporate partners program. I am loving being in the deep end, and I've found myself to be really fascinated by the work our faculty and students are doing.

I can't even imagine.
Assuming he stays with you, have you and C talked much about how you'll handle holiday plans? Will he be going to visit his grandparents or other family? (I was just glancing at my calendar and noticed that Christmas is 8.5 weeks away.)
Totally random question - what did you guys end up doing about C's migraine medication? I remember you being concerned about that during a home inspection since he might not be able to get into a lockbox while under a migraine attack.

Firebird - At this point, no one seems to think it's a good idea for him to have visitation with family. (Please understand this is MUCH more complicated that I can go into with anyone who doesn't have the right "clearance".) So at this point, the plan is Thanksgiving at Pop Tart's sister's house, Mini Wheat coming with us. We'll see what the SWs think as we approach Christmas.
As for migraine meds, we technically don't follow the rules for that. The meds are hidden in my underwear drawer (so fairly certain the kids won't go digging in there) which is right next to the bed.
