People have always been assholes. Only now we're connected 24/7 between Facebook, twitter and various 24 hour news stations. Things that wouldn't be news in our little corner of the world we now get beaten over the head with. DH gets depressed all the time about the world being such an "awful place". I tell him to turn off MSNBC/CNN for awhile. Very true.

I think it depends on the situation. My clients can be very busy and stressed out when they need my services, and as one of them told me, getting a mortgage is like going to the proctologist. So I chalk a lot of ugliness up to people running on empty and just trying to get through their day. That's run of the mill ugliness. People who are habitually awful I have to agree with mental illness and my money is on npd. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards Rae. here's your post. It reads as an absolute. I don't think everyone is an idiot, however, when people make absolutist statements ... well, I will not agree with them. I may think the statement is idiotic. Rereading it you are stating it as an opinion, so normally I'd let it go. But I'm big on scope and what is reasonable. It did not seem like a reasonable opinion. Sorry for jumping on it. I do want to transform the dialogue on what is considered mental illness and it activated one of my hot buttons.

Go back and read my first post and stop assuming everyone else is an idiot. The truly awful people I was referring to are a total of 2 people who have been nasty to people their entire lives and yes, I believe there is a medical reason for that. See that-I said I believe.... As in my opinion. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards honestly - you two have amused me! and the only explanation i can come up with is that at least one of you has had a dx of npd. Well, its not me.

Proboards wouldn't know it was a joke.. ; )A couple of mods asked me about it when I first put it up, and once I explained they were fine with it. If it's causing a problem now, I have no problem deleting it. But it was definitely a joke, not Sum Dum Gai being a judgmental asshole about me being a judgmental asshole Wait, how did I get dragged into this? I'm a total sweetheart.

Why are people so willing to be evil and cruel and unkind and just plain ugly to each other? No good answers here but maybe you people will have some. So, ... what happened to inspire this thread?
FB, are you going to let us know yet?

I answered already. Nothing going on with me personally, just a little sad because of the stories in a couple threads this week, plus an email I received from the mother of a murder victim. Humans inflict so much pain on each other. It makes me depressed.

You're the one who feels the need to put others in their place. And if you're asking I think that you are a very stressed out individual due to your employment and financial issues, and you like to show others your worth by putting others down. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards I'm not trying to show my worth or not. It is true I am stressed and stupid or mostly untrue statements tick me off more at these times. I do try to be nice, but that goes both ways. Make less blanket general statements and you won't read to me like say Paul does. (i.e. to non-conservative posters while reading P&M threads for example.) Hey. I like Paul. How did he get dragged into this.

When I eat right, I feel good and when I feel good, I am nice.

I said that I believe that most people who are habitually nasty (as in decades of being awful to everyone- unless they need something from that person) have mental illness. Maybe I should have said something medically wrong with them since you're correct there are dozens of things that could cause that. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards

People suck. So become a modern-day hermit- safely insulated from interacting with real live humans except in the form of delivery services.
Ok-it's probably a good thing I don't quite have the money to do that...
People are generally pretty good- we're so used to the OKness of people, that when someone sucks, it sticks out and you pay attention to it and remember it far better than all of the easily forgettable people being normal.

My mother is likely borderline. She can also be super charming. I have people asking how she is years after after conversing with her for an hour. Mom and I did a mom/daughter weekend once. The woman leading the class told us how special/wonderful our relationship was. The woman did not hear my mother calling me a b*tch under her breath when we were out of earshot from the teacher, or witness my mother threatening to kick me out of her car, my only source of transportation. I was pregnant, it was dark, and we were in a rural area, where roads were not lit. And because it was extremely rural, my cell phone did work. You can't tell who's mentally sound and who isn't with everyone by casual contact. Agreed.Mental illnesses/addictions affect more of the population than you think. NAMI cites that 1 in 4 adults will experience an mental health disorder within a given year. Of course the percentage of mental illnesses that are more serious is quite a bit less than that. Than I think? No. They think my DH's addiction affects 10%-15% of the population. Actually, it think it's rare that people aren't dealing with something somehow. Borderline what?
The formatting is going crazy on me so I will stop trying to comment by the text. I am very aware of the types of mental illness and the extent in the population. I have done extensive reading and I work in a facility with a population that has issues and have lots of personal experience as well.
People like to say mentally ill forgetting it is an umbrella term like physically ill. We don't say all people who are physically ill are more likely to be bleeding than those who are not, because it is a stupid thought and comparison.
Do you really think depressedpeople, i.e. mentally ill DSM categorized people are more ugly to others than average ? My guess is they are actually less likely to be so. Yet a narcisst is more likely to be an asshole and be able to charm some and treat others like shit. Narcissim is not a treatable DSM category, so in my humble but well-read opinion it should not be seen as "mental illness" the broad category which should again IMO should only encompass those mental illnesses that could get one sent to the mental hospital.
So Depression, Schizophrenia, Catatonic, etc Not Narcissim, Asperberger's, etc.
Plus you have the whole category of physically induced changes in mental status like brain injuries, drug effects, etc. that are actually assholes by physical illness that l ay people and those not paying attention will incorrectly lump into the broad brush of mental illness. (Will fix editing and dumb ass key jumping later.)
No, I do not believe that the mentally ill are necessarily uglier than most others. But, I do think it IS a cause. The title of the thread is "Why are people so ugly to each other." In my experience someone who has borderline personality disorder can be ugly. I provided an answer. And, FWIW, my mother had a breakdown. I saw it and had to clean up after it. If my dad had thought mental health was important, he could have gotten her committed over that one. I'm bowing out. Because I'm not in a mood to debate my experiences anymore.

There is quite a lack of humor nowadays too. Because someone will be OFFENDED. I personally find Joan Rivers to be quite hilarious on Fashion Police. She is a comedian aka the style of Don Rickles or Dean Martin type roasts. But that is now "mean". But, funny Bill Maher isn't painted as "mean" for his comments. Go figure.

Okay, this made me laugh. Thanks. It's a reference to an old joke that still makes me smile, not an insult. That's why I haven't updated it. Proboards wouldn't know it was a joke.. ; ) Not relevant. It doesn't break ToS.

Proboards wouldn't know it was a joke.. ; ) Not relevant. It doesn't break ToS. It is defamatory content towards a third party, which is prohibited in the community guidelines, which all users have represented that they will not do when agreeing to the TOS. It also could be considered generally offensive or in bad taste, according to Porboards, which is hard to know if it would be or not, since we are not proboards, but if proboards did find it as such, it would also be prohibited according the community guidelines. But I was just trying to be funny. Maybe unsuccessfully.

I didn't read the whole thread.. but I definitely think TV, the internet, and facebook are to blame. You see people running around acting like assholes and being assholes to others and you start to think that it's normal and social acceptable behavior. "Hey, as long as I don't throw chairs and knock up 3 people at once, I'm doing ok cause I'm not on Jerry Springer!" It's actually quite sad to me how far we have come even over my lifetime.
Yes and communities are so large/non-existent that people have an infinite number of bridges they can burn. Instead of suffering consequences, and having to make amends, assholes can just keep on being assholes to a new batch of people.
