So napkins and salad make you hoity-toity, huh? Actually, I'm surprised they even use paper towels, from the sound of things. I figured their shirt sleeves were more convenient. Tank tops don't have sleeves. That family never wears shirts with sleeves unless they are going someplace fancy like court. We had a big group dinner once and I nearly left when I walked into the restaurant and half of them were in pajamas at 6pm

Her family does come off a little Honey Boo Boo that's for sure. I hate to sound snobby or elitist but they just didn't fit in with my family at all. They make rude comments about how we were special because we used napkins instead of paper towels. Or make fun of us for having salad with dinner because apparently only snobby people like salad. It was a very strange dynamic and anytime they intermingled with my extended family it was always interesting to watch.
I have long thought my brother was a sociopath and it would make sense that he married the same type of person. They really were very toxic together.

But...do you wipe on the sleeve of the person to your right or left?

But adults using the ol' shirt sleeve trick - yeah, I don't think there's any redemption at that point.

As for the shirts - think of it as collateral damage for now. You will laugh about all this someday - especially when you get to watch your own kids become human Kleenex for their kids.

It was rough for a while there because he was obviously feeling bad, and I couldn't really make him feel better. He's feeling better now, and messing up the room instead of my clothes. (We call him Baby Destructo) It'll be fun to see his kids do the same to him someday.

My sister sent me a text this morning. Apparently in the month my exSIL was back with my brother she convinced him to open a joint credit card with her. He just found out that she ran up a $4000 credit card bill in the course of a month and hid all the purchases at her mother's house.
So for those of you keeping score at home: She "reconciled" with my brother for around 4 to 6 weeks. Just prior to that time her boyfriend and her broke up and he temporarily moved back to Virginia. He was retiring from the Army (had been in our city as the recruiter). While he was in Virginia she moved in with my brother and gave up her apartment. He helped buy her a new car (jury is out on who's name it's in but she doesn't have the income or credit to qualify for a traditional car loan on her own), got her a new puppy and this fancy new credit card she ran up.
Boyfriend moved back to town and she left my brother and the kids, took the car, the puppy and the credit card and moved into a long term stay hotel with him while they were house hunting.
I'm trying hard not to laugh but my brother is an asshole and Karma she is a sneaky B.
Only thing I'm curious about is what in the world she spent $4000 in one month on! Her mom lived in a single wide so it's not like there is storage space for big things like furniture.

Oh man, I could do it. LOL I still have an authorized user card on my ex husband's account and sometimes...just sometimes...I get this evil itch for retribution.

Beth- the gift cards would be a genius idea! I'm guessing mostly clothes, maybe some electronics. Jewelry is a possibility.
Whole thing just blows my mind. I really want to just say "serves you right" but I'm going to wisely keep my mouth shut and not say anything out loud in real life. My mom is very protective about my IB so she will take his side and pat him on the head.
I'm assuming it will cost my dad $4000 to get my brother out of this mess. My parents tend to bail my brothers out frequently.
On a related note- DH, DS and I sat down and discussed Christmas plans. DS is cool with us not getting him any presents other than maybe a couple of ironic tshirts and instead going on vacation somewhere. I've announced to the family at large (parents, siblings, nieces/nephews) that adults will be getting donations made in their names and kids that I buy for are all getting books. My parents are wealthy and don't really want/need presents. They'd be much happier (and have told us so) if we'd donate to a charity than spend money to buy them misc. stuff.
So that's my plan/hope. Books for the kids, donations for my parents and vacation for the Boy and hubby

We haven't settled on a where yet. Doing Winnipeg next month for college visits, Chicago in October for the fall school break. (4 day weekend, state wide in MN), so for Christmas we are open. Thinking some place warm but that's as far as we have gotten. Palm Springs is always a cheap option since we can go to my parents house out there for the cost of a plane ticket and a rental car.
Open to suggestion

Open to suggestion I know your family is very different from mine. What are the odds that if you go to your parents place, someone else (mom, dad, brother, whatever) will join you there? My family's got a couple of places/weekends where if you announce you're going, you're going to have company. Rest of the time we're good about giving you your vacation but 4th of July weekend and Joe's place are the main exceptions.

Currently the house is free on Christmas. My aunt was visiting this past weekend and they were looking at the vacation home calendar and around Christmas the house was free. January is booked solid and February is pretty full already too but currently other than one weekend in December it's pretty open.
We may skip CA and go somewhere else so we don't have to deal with anything "Family" related.

Open to suggestion In or out of the US? We have a little resort in Playa del Carmen we like. Not fancy, excellent beach, decent food and fairly cheap (about $900/pp for a week, inc. air). I'd like to go down there for Christmas some year....

I vote to avoid your parent's Palm Springs property. I agree that others will follow you there...
How about Hawaii? That's a good 8 hour flight away from your problems...

Everytime i go to my parent's beach place i either have to A) hide from my family that i'm there or B) deal with a constant parade of family visits. Mom's family all lives near the beach house and it has become the defacto gathering spot for everyone. They don't see me as often because i live out of the area, so if i'm 'in town' let the visits begin!!!
