Not in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's tent city jail in Maricopa County, Arizona. The sheriff says our troops in Iraq have the same kind of heat, and are conducting combat operations while wearing body armor and combat packs to boot. Are prison busses displaying a telephone number to report illegal alien activity a form of discrimination? The ACLU thinks,so. Sheriff Joe says it's just another form of Crime Stopper advertising. Are male only chain gangs discriminatory? Maybe so, , , so Sheriff Joe starts up a female chain gang just for balance. Do prisoners have a right to watch TV? The Supreme Court says yes. So Sheriff Joe includes TV with two channels: The Disney Channel and the Weather Channel. The county's expenses for animal control was ~~18 million dollars until Sheriff Joe took it over. It is now under 3 million and competes in dog shows. You-Got-to-love-this-Guy. The question is: Why don't we have more like him? Scroll down on the link and read more on Sheriff Joe's approach to saving his constituients money. He was re-elected with 83% of the votes cast. www.investorsiraq.com/showthread.php?158547-SHERIFF-JOE-IS-AT-IT-AGAIN!

... The question is: Why don't we have more like him? ... Not sure about all the country but in the areas that I have lived the sheriff has been elected. So the answer to the question is: The people have not elected more like him.

Yes, it's inhumane and can be deadly.

Yes, I think this Sheriff actually treats criminals like criminals, not like victims. I would imagine his prison is definitely not one people would want to be put back into...
And, seriously, when did watching TV become a right? You know the meaning behind the word "rights" kind of gets dumbed down if it is used for every little thing...

Yes, it's inhumane and can be deadly. So the entire world was inhumane before the mid 1900's?? now air conditioning is another "right?" Good god...not everything in life is a damn right...

If there are a lot of heat strokes it's inhumane. If not, it's not. Uncomfortable is not inhumane.

There were some prison deaths caused near here several years ago because the place had no AC. The ones who died were on psychotropic meds that made them more vulnerable to heat.

He's a giant egotistical douche that has already cost the taxpayers a hell of a lot more than he ever saved- a few good policies can't save him. His ass will end up in prison- it is just a matter of time.

Seems there is a lot of sympathy for convicts here. Let's compare that to the city garbage collectors and telephone pole climbers. What relief do they have from that same 128 degree heat? Or how about the month old cherubs, dogs, cats and elderly indigents who don't have air conditioning, do they have less rights than convicts?

For hurting convicts pride by making them wear pink?

They have the freedom to seek a cooler place if they need it.

They have the freedom to seek a cooler place if they need it. Tell that to a roofer who wants to keep his job. They have the freedom to commit a crime and get put in an air conditioned jail. Most roofers are probably on probation anyway, so it would be easy for them.

Tents in the Arizona Desert at high summer heat are a long way from air conditioned anything. This is torment for the sake of torment and we will all laugh until the dead inmate's family starts slinging those lawsuits. So you're saying 'Air Conditioning' is a right? Edit: What isn't a right these days? That list should be far shorter so could we please get an update?

People do not work outside in 128 degree weather except under the rarest of circumstances and if they do, they will have access to air-conditioned trucks and lots of water. I hope none of the troops in Iraq are reading this. in large cities like NYC

Why don't you read up on the guy before you laud the praises on his treatment of prisoners and immigrants? He is under multiple investigations. It's a hell of a lot more than some pink underwear.

The key to surviving in the heat is water and salt tablets. Nomads have been doing it for a thousand years. The people I have sympathy for are the victims of the criminals. During WW-2 allied troops survived in the desert under high heat. Are these punks any better. Remember criminals forfit rights when convicted. By the way there is a road crew laying pavement in our area under 98 degree heat and the heat index is higher. The bleeding heart thing brings no tears to my eyes.

People voluntarily go in tents much hotter than that in order to be closer to God, or something.

Perhaps you should get a clue and find out who is leading and why they are investigating him. Perhaps, it's the same people who disapprove of his methods because he's "mean" or the people trying to get the "immigrant" vote. Nah....that couldn't be the case now could it.

specious?
Again, I hope the troops in Iraq are not reading this.

Are they given the salt tablets? Do you know what the people under his care are charged with? Like I said, discomfort is one thing, death another. I googled the term, "Heat Exhaustion" and "prisoner deaths" before writing this. I suggest you do the same. And while you are at it, imagine how you will feel as a taxpayer when you have to pay the family's multi-million dollar suit. The pink clothes, fine. The lousy television, sounds great to me. But when you start talking starving people, working them to death or maiming them, you are talking punishment never imposed by a court. What makes this SOB the judge and jury? all of this. well said.

I read up on him and based on the available evidence I concluded that he is a giant douche that doesn't respect the Constitution and is apparently engaged in criminal activity. If you want him for a hero you can have him.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the conditions are like for the guards at this prison?

I understand that he is doing all he can, by suppling the prisoners with lots of water, ice and shade. Some are even sitting on ice blocks. What more can he do? They could be provide indoor housing or a/c in the tents. It has been measured as high as 145 degrees in his tents, I would define that as inhumane. Also, many of these people aren't actually convicted criminals, but people that have been arrested & awaiting their court date or their trial. So we aren't just punishing the guilty by this treatment.

They have the freedom to seek a cooler place if they need it. I may just be behind the times, but I believe committing a crime is still a choice?
