It was so hot here I was unmotivated last week, and couldn’t even muster the will to use the treadmill in our basement. I did enjoy the one blissful day of only being 80 yesterday and did a 2 mile walk with the family, so cheers to a good start to the week.

Not sure how I pulled this off, but DH took both kids to his parents’ house this afternoon and I got the house to myself! I did boring adulting while they were gone like organizing the kid art supplies, laundry, and ironing, and made snickerdoodles (DH’s Father’s Day dessert request) and dinner, but it was blissfully silent at my house for a few hours.

Fort Worth! It’s way better than Dallas, and the same distance away from DFW airport. Downtown Fort Worth has a ton of great restaurants, is safe, and so walkable. I stayed there a couple of months ago for a work trip, and was reminded how much I loved the downtown area (I used to work downtown in 2005-07 before switching jobs and moving away). I felt comfortable walking outside in the morning in my workout clothes before my meeting started and walking back to my hotel after dinner the night before. And the weather is great in the time of year you’re looking at.

A friend in another state (I’m in the middle of the US/she’s in Philly area) just told me her husband is now on hospice (colon cancer), and they celebrated Father’s Day early. He turned 40 a few months ago, and she’ll be 40 this summer. They have two little girls, ages 6 and 8. ☹️😢
We know each other through volunteering in our of professional organization since we were students/early career. Pre-COVID l, we usually saw each other 1-2 times per year at their big meetings. With her permission, I reached out to our mutual friends about a month ago with an update about what was going on in her life, and gathered donations and was able to PayPal her money for whatever she needed to use it on. She’s also been giving me updates, so I’ve shared those updates with our mutual friends via email so she doesn’t have to update so many people.
Any suggestions on other specific ways I can offer to help? I can only imagine how much she’s hurting and trying to hold it all together. I thought about asking if the girls needed new books, art supplies, etc, but didn’t know if that would even be helpful. I also know that when someone says “let me know how I can help,” without offering concrete things, the offer of help doesn’t often get taken.

I just finished Ready Player Two - it took me a while to get into that one, but it was okay by the end. To me, not as good as the first book, but that's not a surprise as it seems like most sequels don't hold up as well.
I read We Need to Talk: A Memoir about Wealth by Jennifer Risher earlier in May - I heard her on several podcasts and the premise of the book sounded good (author and her husband got awarded Microsoft stock early in the 90s that made them a ton of money, and then the husband went to Amazon and also made a ton off of more stock options there). It fell flat for me, unfortunately.
Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor was a neat read by a POC and a fairly quick read.

May 2021 Update:
ASSETS:
Checking/Savings: $143.5k House: $512.7k Retirement: $1.798M Brokerage: $5k 529s: $63.4k Company Stock: $208k
DEBTS: Company Stock Loan (to shareholder I'm buying stock from, at 0.52% for 7 years): $175k
Total NW: $2,345,300
We're up over 3% since last month, but that's basically all home value. I've ignored all the gains on our house since we purchased it almost 7 years ago, but we appealed our property tax assessment and partially won, so I figured I should probably update it to at least the assessed value.
As usual, the list above excludes our cars, which are worth around $30k combined, but I leave them out because we're unlikely to sell, and need them to get to/from work, kids schools, etc. in the land of suburbia.

www.3dsourced.com/rankings/best-free-3d-software/I would probably try TinkerCAD or Sketchup. A couple of high school groups in volunteered with a few years ago used Sketchup for the building design project they were working on and liked it, though as an industry advisor/mentor, I didn’t use it so I don’t have first hand knowledge. I’m assuming you don’t use any of these programs at work? DH and I both have access to Autocad and REVIT at work, so for our basement remodel project to finish it, he worked on the plans in Autocad during lunch/after work.

Update from this 9-1-2020 post. Current NW ~ $870,000. House went up a bit (valued around $200k now, owe very little), my income pretty much doubled as of 2-01-21, and I'm working on maxing the 457 account ($19,500), for the first and probably only time of my life. Turning 50 next year, so it will be harder to do. I'm looking at buying a newer van, so will take a hit if that happens. ETA. The van is a no-go for now. Currently in the body shop, previously had 2 accidents, and went to auction after it failed emissions test in NY. The idea was to get less potential problems with a newer vehicle, not more. Closing in on $900k--possibly tomorrow (unless the market takes a dive). DH's ESOP is way up, and my payday is tomorrow. Do you mind if I PM you some questions on the ESOP?

Found out today we’re heading back to the office the first full week of June. Should be interesting, fully vaccinated staff have no restrictions, un-vaccinated have to mask and socially distance. Reminds me of the “star bellied sneetches” from Dr Seuss fame. How will we know who’s “genuine” and who’s “fake” We’re changing to something similar on June 1st, though we don’t have to be back in the office yet, they’re just encouraging yet. So far I only have one person complaining about the mask requirement for those not fully vaccinated.

For now I will be wearing my mask inside. Outdoors I'll evaluate based on how crowded, etc. Supposedly 50% of my county has had at least one dose. The other 50% is in no way entirely composed of kids. I do not expect the unvaccinated to wear their masks indoors. I expect they will lie about their status. So to protect me and my family, I'm going to leave the mask on for now. I'd like to get my asthma doctor's take on it for me personally based on my issues. My next appointment isn't until late June. Have you found that the mask requirement helped your chronic infections/allergies? I know that since most of us have not been as exposed this past year, your chances of picking up something are less, but have they helped you any? Anecdotal, but my 8yo/3rd grader has been fully in person since the end of September. This year he got strep throat once, and nothing else, not even a cold. In previous years he has had strep, influenza, stomach virus and colds.

I was going to say the Space Shuttles routinely flew on top of a huge plane when they couldn't land at the Cape. But those planes were retired when the Space Shuttle was. I don't remember which shuttle ended up in LA but they flew it from WA state to SoCal. really low over 101 and it flew by my work. You could follow its progress on the web. That was half a day when productivity must have neared zero and we were all ouside when it finally did pass by. Memories... DH and I happened to be in DC when they flew the Discovery space shuttle in to Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space museum. I was in the Rayburn House Building when it did the passes over the Mall, and a bunch of us left our meeting to go outside for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Plus we’re all engineers and nerdy like that. It was so cool to see.

Personally, I didn't think they would be able to put up with my sister and BIL for 3 weeks, but they did. That's when it blew up. That's when they came here and niece-in-law was in tears because she finally realized her mother-in-law doesn't like her and she is correct. I didn't tell her that, but my sister has never liked her and never will. That stinks. I know it happens more often than I probably realize, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck when you realize the parent of the person you love doesn’t like you.

My guess is also the 4yo. That said, this just hasn’t something I’d be upset over. Kids are germ factories, and at some point you need to build your immune system. Better now than later, and roseola generally seems a pretty mild illness. M had it as a baby, and other than the fever and then subsequent rash, didn’t have any other symptoms that I recall.

I hope I didn’t come off as indicating everyone should want to be in management/career should head that direction. It’s more the idea of continuing to grow and learn new things. My company has a technical track, so there are specific opportunities for employees who would not be good managers but are great technically (and consequently really valuable employees) to become technical leaders/subject matter experts and be trusted resources for our clients, do internal training (if that’s their thing), etc.

I don't want any more pay. I want to left alone to continue to do a great job in my current role plus continue to grow as a mentor. I've got 18 more years til my early retirement goal of having the option to FIRE at 60. You may not want it now, but don’t close the door on forever. I can’t imagine staying in the same role for 18 years, and while we’re in different industries/professions, I think we’re at similar levels in our careers. I totally get saying no to it now, but staying open to the possibility of advancement in the future.

Several of my college classmates and I were upset when Hidden Figures came out. We took an entire year in 8th grade of state history. There's a test and competition. Nothing was said about Katherine Johnson. Her work was integral to the early NASA flights. Similarly, I grew up 90 miles north of Tulsa, OK and had never heard of Black Wall Street / Greenwood District and the Tulsa Race Massacre that happened there until I was an adult. I’m also pretty sure they still don’t teach that in my hometown.

I’ve been in a slump lately, but found myself signed up for our corporate challenge 5k yesterday (downside to being at a female at an engineering firm - not many options to choose from, so it’s begging to get all hands on deck for things like this when you need both participants from both genders and all age ranges, lol). I was so not ready, but did jog more of it than expected, especially considering how hilly the course was this year. Of course, today I’m sore.
Took the youngest out for a bike ride while I walked today, so while I was slow due to the aforementioned sore legs, I was moving.
Now to keep it up again.

April 2021 Update:
ASSETS:
Checking/Savings: $139k House: $428k Retirement: $1.797M Brokerage: $5k 529s: $63.5k Company Stock: $208k
DEBTS: Company Stock Loan (to shareholder I'm buying stock from, at 0.52% for 7 years): $175k
Total NW: $2,466,800
We're up about 5% since last month.
As usual, the list above excludes our cars, which are worth around $30k combined, but I leave them out because we're unlikely to sell, and need them to get to/from work, kids schools, etc. in the land of suburbia.
I also contested or property values this past month (we received our annual assessments, and based on the price our neighbors 2 doors down sold at in December - almost exact same square footage, lot size, bedroom/bathroom - our value is high). Once I hear back later this month/beginning of next, I plan to adjust our house value to match - either way, it's going up fairly significantly as I've kept it what it was valued at when we bought nearly 7 years ago.
Basement remodel is still underway - DH is trucking along, so that will also impact our house value next year as he pulled permits, so it's all on the up-and-up.

For those not on Facebook with wibeth, here is her latest update, posted today:
Just a quick update. I'm done with chemo. I made it thru 5 of 6 sessions before the side effects made me too miserable to continue.
I now get Keytruda every 3rd week and am having no problems with it. My Aurora Home Health Nurse is planning on dismissing me in a couple of weeks as I don't need her anymore. My Aurora Home PT person is keeping me on. We're working on regaining mobility so I can be more independent.
My spine Doctor says I don't need to come back unless something goes wrong. I'm regrowing bone nicely.

Pfizer #2 for DH (45) and me (39) yesterday.
We are in Kansas.
We both fall in our state’s phase 3 (though our state opened to all adults the week after phase 3/4 jointly started - but we were able to get our first shots in the week before it opened to everyone).
No health issues for either of us - we were in phase 3 due to our jobs.
We each had a sore arm after the first shot.
I have a sore arm and some fatigue after the second shot.
DH has a sore arm, low grade fever (100.1), and feels like he has a head cold after the second shot.

My city doesn’t have a composting service, but there are a couple of local private ones, and we started paying for one last summer. I love it and wish I’d known about the option sooner! The one I use gives a 3 or 5 gallon bucket with a lid. I keep mine in the kitchen, and it doesn’t smell thanks to the lid keeping the smell in the bucket. Each week on compost day we put the bucket on the porch, and they pick it up and replace it with a clean bucket and lid. We can also set pizza boxes out with the bucket and they will take those. We can put cooked meat, bones, produce, etc in ours. The 2 big no items for us is raw meat and yard waste (they don’t want the chemicals that come with yard waste).
My kids are great about putting what they don’t eat, apple cores, banana peels, etc in the bucket, and my 4yo’s favorite chore is to put the bucket on our porch on compost day and bring the clean one inside.

Do you guys have a plan for the cash, aricia? We tend to hoard cash, so I’m always curious what others are doing if they’re in a somewhat similar position.

My current (very minor) pet peeve - children’s audio picture books that don’t have a beep or other tone to indicate when to turn the page. M is loving them in the car, but doesn’t know when to turn the page and I’m driving so I can’t see to tell her when to turn the page. 🤦♀️🤷♀️
Also minor, but annoying - C’s class is doing the Flat Stanley project this year where each kid made a Flat Kid of themselves, wrote a letter and sent it to someone who is supposed to take pictures and send back pics of the Flat Child’s adventures. C wanted to send it to DH’s uncle in Colorado - we got his okay (and texted him what was needed before he agreed), but found out from C that his never got sent back. Apparently uncle lost it, then found it again last week but figured it was too late and isn’t sure he still has it. I feel badly for C - he was really excited about this and he’s the only kid who didn’t have his sent back. And we totally could have easily sent it to someone else instead or even sent another one to him to we had known. 😞
