A black baby boy born in 2000 has a 1 in 3 chance of being incarcerated in his life. A white boy is 1 in 17. Drug use rates in the races are similar.
**info from a seminar I have taken.
I’m starting to think there is something to this systemic racism thing.
BTW, the US has one of the highest incarceration rates among developed countries.

There is definitely systemic racism going on in our country. It’s shameful and something that needs to be addressed although I don’t have the knowledge to figure out what should be done.

It's been like that here for a long time...50-50 shot an African American boy graduates HS. 50-50 shot he ends up in jail. I was looking up the book "Evicted," and Google Gave me this book as a recommendation: The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America
It's on a bunch of lists, NYT best seller, etc.
Might be of interested to read.

I've seen suggestions that lobbyists for the private prison industry keeps our incarceration rates high. They have a financial incentive to do so.

This also goes hand in hand with why pot is still illegal on a federal level.

I think the "for profit" motive needs to be contained a little bit. Yes, we're a capitalist country but certain areas should be off-limits, such as private prisons, health care, public education, etc.
A couple of years ago I was talking to a coworker and he explained how he was driving at night and a cop stopped him for trying to pass him. My coworker was on the left lane and the cop was on the right lane. He said what the cop gave him for a reason to stop him didn't make any sense. So he argued. He tends to argue a lot. I got nervous just listening to him recount the story. In the end, I told him he needs to be careful. Just say "yes, sir" and later on go to the police station and put a complaint against the officer, but don't argue with them in the heat of the moment. I shouldn't have to feel this way, or give that sort of advice just because he's black. But I have a sense that he's at higher risk of ending up in jail or dead simply because of the skin color. Shouldn't be this way.

DH read "The Color of Law" and told me a lot about what he read. It was definitely an eye-opener about our nation's history. This and a lot of other things have left me feeling pretty cheated and lied to with the history I was taught in school.

Several of my college classmates and I were upset when Hidden Figures came out. We took an entire year in 8th grade of state history. There's a test and competition. Nothing was said about Katherine Johnson. Her work was integral to the early NASA flights.

This and a lot of other things have left me feeling pretty cheated and lied to with the history I was taught in school. Right? I was floored my daughter's textbook still teaches Native Americans were pretty much savages till we all became friends and had Thanksgiving. Not to mention John.Smith has been historically verified to be a lying POS and Pocahontas had a much more tragic story. Maybe my kid doesn't need all the gory details till she's older but damn can we stop with savages in teepees troupe? They had quite advanced cities over here while we were accusing people who declared the world round to be witches. There was barely a blip about African American slavery. I don't know enough about the 1619 project to fully form an opinion on it's merits but I do agree the white washing of history needs to end.

I need to research the 1619 project more. I'm a long, long ways out of the American public education system so I am shocked and saddened to hear that your daughter's textbook is still perpetuating the lies or, at best, half truths.

I had never heard of Katherine Johnson or the other Black women who worked for NASA until Hidden Figures came out.
Johnson was brilliant, yet we were never taught about her. I was in high school at the time of the projects she worked on. We talked about all the men at NASA but Katherine Johnson was not mentioned.

The prison industrial complex is a grossly awe-inspiring machine. The documentary 13th is just an overview of it... there's only so much you can cram into two hours. Also check out the book Chokehold.

This is what happens when people in charge think talking about a handful of black people during Black History Month is enough. (No I'm not blaming the month for this, without it I don't think it'd be any better at this juncture, but I'm sure plenty are using it as a reason to not change anything.)

I thought I would add this here. I lived in this area right before this happened and I remember watching the news and seeing parents complaining about the harsh sentences their kids had gotten when they got in trouble...well there was a reason... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_for_cash_scandal

Similarly, I grew up 90 miles north of Tulsa, OK and had never heard of Black Wall Street / Greenwood District and the Tulsa Race Massacre that happened there until I was an adult. I’m also pretty sure they still don’t teach that in my hometown.

The US has less than 5% of the global population, but a full 25% of the world's prisoners. Something really stinks.

I used squishy language to make sure I was right. Thanks for the corrective backup.

I remember reading about those judges being convicted at the time but I had kind of forgotten how recently this actually happened.

The fact that there is a prison industry in this country is disgusting.
I only just learned about Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre in 2019 because I was going on a business trip to Tulsa and wanted to see what there was to do on my free day. I was floored. I did make it a point to visit the Greenwood district. I'm a Philly suburb lifer so I've known about the MOVE bombing because you can't not hear about it around the time of the anniversary, but I was shocked at how many people only just learned about it last year. We need to do better at teaching and learning our awful history.

There was a similar massacre in 1923 in Rosewood, FL.

I've learned a lot watching Adam Ruins Everything which then prompted me to look into stuff even more.
The story of how we aquired Hawaii was a revelation.

Another stat I stumbled across.
15% of NYS population is black. 38% of adult arrests are black. 50% of persons sentenced to prison are black.
But it’s only because blacks are criminals, right?
