I don't know if it is selective memory or what Trumpsters possess. Obama was handed an economy that had been on the brink of a financial meltdown. Biden was handed an economy that was shut down and a POTUS using the pandemic to divide the country. Funny how things like that are forgotten when they brazenly claim the country does better under a Republican.

yeah. like i say, that amounts to 100-200 hours a month of driving! that is 3-6 hours a day! there are people in CA that drive that much. they live in the middle of the state and commute to the coastal regions for work. me? i would never put up with it. that is 100-200 hours a month that i could be spending on music, which is far more valuable to me. but i get that some people love driving. i am just not one of them. i might like it better if i ran into fewer assholes and traffic on the road. however, i have to correct you slightly on your math. half of the country does not use 300 gallons a month. if it did, then the averages would be way different than they are. even if the rest of the country drove ZERO miles per year, if you are averaging 5-10k/month, and you were like half the country, that would be 2.5-5k/month average, which is 3x what it actually is. the ONLY way the math works is if you are a 1-10%'er. if 10% of the country drove as much as you, that would be HALF of the national average, just for you and your demographic. which would mean the rest of us would drive less than 6000 miles a year- which is POSSIBLE, though not likely. in other words, you are most certainly in a group that comprises less than 10% of the driving public. thanks, though. this explains a lot about a great many things. it is a glimpse into the lives of the flyover states, for sure. Yea that is about right for avg. Some days only about an hour then I may be in the truck for 5 or 6 for 4 day straight travelling. You are saying that you travel 5-6 hours and it is not work related? You do not receive reimbursement from your employer or deduct the standard mileage rate on your taxes? Just travel 5-6 hours 4 days straight because you live in rural America?

I hate that our culture encourages and promotes this type of wasteful energy use. An acquaintance couldn't make a volunteer meeting, because she had a Mystery Tour booked. Where was she going? No idea, that's the Mystery. Afterwards, we asked how it went. They had a bus ride to Cooperstown (other side of the state, at least 4 hours away, not a day trip IMO). When they got there, they were told they could visit the museum but had only a half hour (admission $40+) and some other destination was closed. They also visited a Power Authority. Umm, we have the Niagara Power Vista here in our backyard! So they basically spent all day on a bus.

Same fucking economy.

And getting a benefit from this would negate her argument about the price of gas and all the miles driven. I mean, really 5-6 hours 4 days a week makes about as much sense as defending Trump when he gave Covid machines to Putin.

Washington Post article. Trump says gas should be $1.87 a gallon. Here’s what that would mean.Experts say that the former president’s campaign promise of cheap gasoline could have severe economic consequences. It’s become a common refrain during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign: Gasoline prices would plummet if he returned to the White House, falling as low as they when he was last there. “When I left office ... gasoline had reached $1.87 a gallon. We actually had many months where it was lower than that,” Trump told reporters outside his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., this summer. “But we hit $1.87, which was a perfect place, an absolutely beautiful number.” Trump has mentioned this target price of $1.87 a gallon more than 19 times on the campaign trail, according to a Washington Post analysis of his remarks. But supporters say the figure, which does not appear on Trump’s campaign website or in the 2024 Republican Party platform, is less a precise goal than a powerful reminder of how rising prices have hurt consumers in recent years. Energy experts and economists, however, say the suggestion he could slice gas prices by 40 percent — the national average is currently $3.16 — underscores how candidates can overstate their ability to shape the economy. And in this case, they warn, achieving what Trump is proposing could have severe consequences for many of the industries he is vowing to support. For gas prices to fall to $1.87 a gallon, crude oil prices would need to dramatically drop to just $20 a barrel, according to calculations by Mark Finley, a fellow in energy and global oil at Rice University. For context, West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the U.S. benchmark, was trading around $71 a barrel on Wednesday. The only time oil prices dipped near $20 a barrel in recent years was “during the pandemic,” Finley said, "when oil demand was in a free-fall and the Saudis and Russians were having a price war.” Companies generally can’t break even on oil production when the price of a barrel falls below $45, according to Ed Hirs, an energy economist at the University of Houston. If crude prices plummeted to $20 a barrel, they say, top U.S. oil producers would probably pull back on major investments. Rest of article here: Trump says gas should be $1.87 a gallon. Here’s what that would mean.

Today might do 2 miles if any tomorrow I am leaving for Savannah I will probably do 1500 for the weekend round trip with all the running around with the grands.

What, when? Please show me where I have said people in NYC should suck it up or move about rents? I know I never started it that way. I don't need to tell you how presidents control gas prices, I don't know and I don't care just that under a Republican it is generally cheaper for their term than it is under a democrat. Only an uninformed person would see it differently. It is only 1 of the reasons I wouldn't vote for a dem. The way it is looking Harris is going to lose bigly..... You are so incredibly uninformed. If you cannot tell us how a president controls gas prices, how is a president responsible for them. Vote how you want. But your reasoning is stupid, just own up to the fact that your reasons are dumb. Republicans tell people who live in high tax areas to move. I am sure you don’t have a problem with the SALT tax limit, so I don’t believe you that you havent said that to people who live in nyc. You must be incredibly vain to think you do or how to control it.

since 1932, the economy has grown an average of 4.6% per year under Democrats, only 2.4% per year under Republicans. stats and perception are 2 different animals. I live better under republican leadership than I ever do under Democrat no matter what a chart says. I also am comforted with a strong leader who will let it be known the they will destroy another country on a whim rather than kiss their ass.

If it is as big an issue as you claim it is, you must have an intelligent idea about how he does. Otherwise you are just another dumb conservative who is so uninformed as to be a useless member of society. As to your perceptions about republicans being better on the economy: we rely on facts, not feelings when we make decisions. Otherwise you wind up claiming that ivermectin treated covid, something your hero and fellow conservatives believed. How f….. stupid, but what should we expect from uou

Many people feel comforted with the idea of living in a country with both such a leader and the capability to destroy. That is what has lead countries other than the US to develop nuclear weapons, so they don't have to kiss our ass. North Korea is a great example and Iran is simply working to follow that same path to security.

And yet juries convicted trump. Juries are never involved when no crimes have been committed. I imagine you will be in attendance for this event. If it was close by and more affordable I would.

All I can come up with is drug dealer! 24 hours of driving on a weekend trip? No business expenses to deduct?

How I live has always been much more a result of my personal decisions than who was President. Democrat or Republican, I've done fine under both and voted for both...although I don't fully align with either.
I draw the line at unhinged. Trump is not mentally competent to hold office. My feelings on this would be the same if the parties were reversed.

247 would be me driving to Des Moines and back every day for funsies. If it were for a job or volunteer work I would be expected to be reimbursed for mileage.
What is it they are always saying about if you don't like something? Oh yeah .. move. If you don't like high gas prices move somewhere where you don't have to drive 247 miles a day and 1500 miles just for a weekend.
Colorado is 823 miles away from Council Bluffs according to Google. That is about a 10 hour drive for us. I'm sorry but if you are driving 10+ hours every weekend and own a car that only gets 18 miles to the gallon there is nobody to blame but you.
Aren't conservatives big on "personal choice?" Why is it the president's job to make sure you have cheap gas so you can drive all over hell and back rather than move somewhere else?

I was thinking that would be like me running halfway across Minnesota to hit up Target. LOL I drive a crap ton. I'm 15 miles from town and Carrot is in a bunch of activities and sometimes we run home just to quick do barn chores and come back to town but still never remotely close to that kind of miles in a typical day. I put 900 miles on the van moving DS to IL last weekend, but that was over the course of 4 days and it was 380 miles there and 380 miles back. Thursday and Sunday were mostly spent driving. Friday and Saturday were running around town a lot getting his apartment set up and buying things. I'm trying to imagine doing twice as much driving in half the days and actually having any time to spend with the grandkids.

And if Trump did destroy another country, it would be a whim, you are correct there. If that your definition of a strong leader, this country is lost.

Trump and Biden have been about the same for me in terms of how well i have done. my objection to Trump has nothing to do with the economy, even though he managed it worse by every reasonable measure. it has to do with the fact that he is a self absorbed criminal.

Your perceptions are misleading you about how other world leaders see Trump. Putin and the other dictators see him as an easily manipulated buffoon who can be bullshitted with flattery. It’s true the rest of the world fears Trump will destroy some one based on a whim, and stupidly launch us into WWIII. Which will not be survivable. Not sure why you think that’s a good thing.

Aw, I was waiting for the pro trumpers to get around to telling us about how trump will subsidize the cost of gas with Federal Tax dollars so that Americans can enjoy those super low gas prices. Maybe trump will get the old money printing presses going and give trillions to the Big Oil companies.
Big Oil companies are NOT charities so they won't give American's a special discount on oil/gas without getting something in return. Think about it. The purpose of a corporation (or any business) is to MAKE money and be able to pay it's owners/stockholders/upper management/employees AND have some money left over to fund future projects/research/grow the business.
Since I had a conversation with a relative who believes the President controls gas prices - here's how it would work: trump would force Big Oil to lower their prices for Americans. But, Big Oil would do this because trump would let Big Oil produce MORE oil/products in America (more fracking, more drilling, more pipelines, more everything!!!). With all that extra product - Big Oil would be able to sell more oil/products to foreign countries (and would be able to charge lower prices than other oil supplying countries). America would corner the market! the President could then dictate what prices Big Oil charges to Americans. With all the money Big Oil would be getting from the sale of products (exports) they'd be willing and able to charge less to Americans. Of course, Americans would be paying MORE for all the stuff that is imported into America (made with all that higher costing oil products other countries bought from us).... but hey, gas would be cheap.
That's HOW the president controls gasoline prices - by dictating HOW Big Oil should do business. The person who outlined this for me is all for smaller government and states rights. But, I guess it's ok if the Government controls the price of gas, who gets fracking/drilling, refineries, how that effects the people who live near these places, how much exported oil products should cost, and control all the infrastructure needed to drill, refine, ship the products, etc...
It all made my head hurt. Apparently anytime you don't have enough knowledge/information everything works by "magic".

It is getting a little brutal in here - I don’t know if I should get some popcorn or set the phone down and go outside to pick a daisy. I wish all of us collectively would use ignore and go back to real grown up conversations instead of trying to combat the drivel which is a losing proposition, GIANT waste of time and only really serves to benefit one poster. True but I think it also highlights how some voters think. Granted the last time I took government was in HS so maybe I am not on the total up and up but it never ceases to amaze me how much control some people think the president has. I've turned blue trying to explain checks and balances and that no the president can't do that CONGRESS holds that power. And these are often the same people who go on and on about small government. How the federal government has too much power, this/that/the other should be run by private industry which can do it better and the government should butt out etc etc. Apparently that only applies to social programs that would benefit society as a whole such as universal health care, free college, a clean environment, safe food, tested pharmaceuticals etc. When it comes to their 18 mpg gas guzzlers they drive 1500 miles in on a weekend? Well the government needs to do something about those gas prices! That Biden won't personally take control of Big Oil and fix this shit makes him a bad president. Either you are responsible for where you live and what type of car you choose to drive or you want government in control. If they can control the price of gas then they can also decide they have the right to tell you what you can drive and force car companies under their control too. You can't have it both ways people. Do they REALLY believe if the president gets to personally control Big Oil prices said president is going to stop there? Especially someone as power hungry as Trump? Or do they even care so long as it means that they get their gas guzzler and everyone else knows their place?

Do they REALLY believe if the president gets to personally control Big Oil prices said president is going to stop there? Especially someone as power hungry as Trump? Or do they even care so long as it means that they get their gas guzzler and everyone else knows their place? Exactly, as to what I have bolded. And as much as I admire the goals of the Green Party, this is why I would never vote for their candidate for president.* In order to really effectuate change, you need to build from the local level, to the state level which is a breeding ground for future elected officials in the Senate and House. There needs to be a deep bench of like-minded legislators in Congress that will actually support the president's goals. And that takes time. Change is gradual. Incremental. And it's especially short-sighted to say that Harris had four years to do what she says she wants to do and she didn't do it. If a president doesn't have control to do what he wants, how does a vice president get to exert any control? Executive orders can only take the president so far. He or she cannot enact legislation on their own, nor can they invalidate a properly passed and enacted law. * Well, that, and I don't like the spoiler role they played in Florida in 2000. What can I say? I have been known to hold a grudge.

The only constitutional duty the VP has is to break a tie in Congress. Otherwise their sole purpose is to be a body ready to take over if something happens to the president. I have also been very confused when people rant about Kamala being a "do nothing' VP. How many VPs in history have "done something"? VPs don't set policy. VPs cannot sign things into law. I remember Al Gore making climate change his platform. I remember Dan Quail misspelling potato. Otherwise I got nothing.
