The opening next Friday, July 26th of the summer olympics in Paris are going to have a very different parade of nations. The parade of nations' athletes will take place on the Seine River with each nation's athletes on a size appropriate vessel. A photoshopped (?) image of what it will look like. Bleachers all along the river. THE OPENING CEREMONY A ceremony on the riverTaking on a new guise, the parade of athletes will be held on the Seine with boats for each national delegation. These boats will be equipped with cameras to allow television and online viewers to see the athletes up close. Winding their way from east to west, the 10,500 athletes will cross through the centre of Paris, the overall playing field for the Games on which these competitors will display their sporting prowess over the next 16 days. The parade will come to the end of its 6-kilometre route in front of the Trocadéro, where the remaining elements of Olympic protocol and final shows will take place. PARADE ROUTE
The river parade will follow the course of the Seine, from east to west over 6 kilometres. The parade will depart from the Austerlitz bridge beside the Jardin des Plantes at 7.30 p.m. CET (10.30 a.m. in Los Angeles, 2.30 p.m. in Rio de Janeiro, 6.30 p.m. in London and 8.30 p.m. in Athens) and make its way around the two islands at the centre of the city (the Île Saint Louis and the Île de la Cité) before passing under several bridges and gateways. Athletes on board the parade boats will get glimpses of some of the official Games venues, including Parc Urbain La Concorde, the Esplanade des Invalides, the Grand Palais, and lastly the Iéna bridge where the parade will come to a stop before the ceremony’s finale at the Trocadéro. I'm looking forward to it. The French are so stylish I'm sure they'll give us a spectacle.

<<each nation's athletes on a size appropriate vessel>> This does give me pause, though. Some teams come from very small countries, and so the team could be in the single-digits of athlete count. I just picture the dinghy of Vanuatu getting swamped by Venezuela's very much bigger boat. Or the Costa Rica canoe taking on water from the Chinese vessel's wake.

They might even have two, three or four small delegation nations on a single large boat. Just guessing. I just found out my niece and her family are in Paris for their eleven year old's hockey tournament. She said they are leaving to fly home Friday morning before the opening begins. She said getting around Paris right now is a nightmare.

As for small vessels for small countries maybe some of the Millionaire basketball players can loan them one of their small yachts! Just a thought/

We don't need no stinkin aircraft carrier. The athletes competing in boat sports can just act as a flotilla around whatever main boat there is. So, the kayakers, rafters, canoers, etc. don't need to be on a large US boat. They already flew their boats in anyway. Not sure what I will think if the US's ship ends up being a smaller Disney cruise ship.

Aaaaah, I never made that link Tour de France/Olympics. I just thought they were totally of their rocker especially with such a large part of it in Italy (not part of France last time I looked) this year. Sometimes I am a bit slow but in this case I believe it is mostly because I rarely watch sports but Olympic opening/closing ceremonies and women's gymnastics are exceptions to that

It was weird to see the end not at the Arc de Triumphs, but damn did Nice look beautiful!!
We stood on the final circuit in Paris a few years ago. We got to see the Tour de Femme, the caravan and the 6 times the cyclists did the circle. They were frickin fast! It was amazing. But I had no idea what was going on without Phil Liggit telling me what to look for. 🤣

Any idea who the athlete was carrying the Olympic Torch doing parkour, zip line, and more tricks in different places? He ended setting on fire a stream going to the Eifel Tower which lit up with and entertaining light display.
What did I like the best? The various entertainments along the river as well as on barges on the river. The fashion cat walk across one of the bridges with all the dancers on the side. The opera singers. The flag being carried by "horse" up the river.

It has even more spectacle and flow which is perfect for large venue performances like this one was.

The masked torch carrier is shown in different venues around Paris. Side skits. One was running on the roof tops. Zip lining. Another in a clock tower that shows the future and the torch bearer getting into a hot air balloon. I'm guessing this is their mascot. The snippets are entertaining. The minionsI in a submarine act out some of the events. I'm rewatching the parade of athletes.

During the opening ceremony I was wondering where the Australian team and the US team boat where since the teams were boating in alphabetical order by French names where Australie (Australia) should have been at the front of the pack and Etas-Unis (United States) in the middle. Both countries came in at the back of the pack in front of the French team. It must have been the sheer size of the Australian and United States boats as they were the largest in the procession.

The most scared I’ve ever been while in a car was 1) taxi ride in Columbia where no one pays attention to the line markings and there were five rows of traffic speeding through what was probably meant to be a 3 lane road, and 2) taxi ride on the Paris ring road, where they seemed to be getting faster and faster the more congested the road was. On the other hand, the metro and train travel in and out of the City are fantastic. TGF trains are awesome. Which we had some.

How will the US get an aircraft carrier into the Seine? will it have the new Trump bow, that makes it look like a yacht (and will make it infinitely more vulnerable in a collision).

Between the '70s when airlines offered youth fares to the '80s when I used my employment airline Inter-line discounts I made six vacation trips to Paris. It's my favorite international city. I would have loved to have lived there in the '30s and '40s (minus the Nazi occupation period) for its art and artist scene. Also, my favorite photographer goes by the name of Brassaï. The Hungarian photographer moved to Paris in 1924, Brassaï took many black and white photos of Paris's working class. The pictures were often taken after nightfall. Interesting fellow and artwork. Look him up. Some of his photos in the second link. Brassaï Brassi photos

An 'Ooops' mistake in the 1996 movie Titanic was the character Jack showing the character Rose some of his drawings. One of the drawings Jack showed Rose was the woman on the left. The problem is it is a drawing of this woman (right) Brassi took a photo of in a bar in Paris in the 1930s. The Titanic sunk in 1912. Both Brassi and the movie named the person Madame Bijou. The 'ooops' was discovered after the release of the movie. .

Having now just viewed some of their work online, I like Robert Capa, (David Seymour)Chim and Gerda Taro. Tragically, they all died covering wars. I also like black and white photos over color photos too. The below is my favorite Brassaï photo. It is also my Facebook cover picture. Brassaï took a night picture of the stairway in Montmartre area of Paris which leads up to the Sacré Cœur Basilica. Today, there is a funicular operating along side the stairway. I like the picture because it has the air of possible 1940s espionage in its shadows and fog. What you don't see on the right hand side of the pictures are streets that end at the stairway. I have walked up/down those stairs several times. The view from the top and from the Sacré Cœur Basilica gives the viewer a good idea just how big a city Paris is.

Getting back to the opening of the Summer Olympics in Paris. Many users on Facebook state they didn't like the opening because one scene in the show made fun of Jesus, his disciples, and the last supper. A couple of jpegs of what they didn't like about it. Someone on Facebook posted the following to explain what we saw and that it had nothing to do with Jesus and the last supper.

So I just finished discussing the opening ceremony with DGS2 (7YO). Living in Germany he watched it live as well since they are in the same time zone. For the record he has declared the Minion episode the absolute winner of the ceremony. He felt he had to go through it step by step just in case that I missed something. The carrying the torch over the roofs and the horse on the water were also hits for him. The athletes on the boats was cool to him as well because he had four countries to look for: his two citizen countries, the one where he lives and one related to his name. I agreed with him. It was great fun made even better by discussing it with him

Having now just viewed some of their work online, I like Robert Capa, (David Seymour)Chim and Gerda Taro. Tragically, they all died covering wars. i think that Capa's case was particularly tragic. he was in love with Taro, and she was lost at age 26. then he had OFFICIALLY stopped doing war photography, but was goaded into the IndoChina conflict, and stepped on a land mine. dead at age 40. there is a song written by Alt-J about his tragic death and how it joined him in a flash with his long lost love. it is called Taro. highly recommended.
