I see lots of comments about how being "woke" is bad, but a lot of my opinions/beliefs are covered under being "woke." But at this point, I'm not even sure what that is.
I think that people of color got and continue to get the short end of the stick in the US. I don't think that including those lessons in school is bad.
I don't care what gender you identify as.
I don't care who marries who as long as the parties are adults and fully consent. I recognize that kids will ask about Susie who has two daddies. You just tell the kids, they love each other and want to raise Susie together.
I don't care who sleeps with who. As long as the parties are adults and consent.
I think it's horrible that wages haven't kept pace with inflation.
I think higher education should be more affordable. I didn't say free.
I think the cost of healthcare needs to be addressed.
I think discriminating on a person whether they have an innie or an outie is stupid.
I don't understand why these sentiments are bad.

Being woke is bad is because it requires us to know better and more importantly, do better. That's hard work. Change is hard. Change is feared.
It means, we think and decide for ourselves rather than follow religious and cultural norms and values. Also, not very popular. It means we don't rug sweep anymore. Also not very popular.

My understanding of being “woke” is not just going along with the information given to us, or accepting things at face value, but instead, thinking a little deeper and asking questions.
When I first started hearing the term, it was in regards to minorities in our society and the truth about history as it pertains to minorities, not just what the “white man” was ok with being known about that history and minorities in general.
It has since branched out to include more things we are told and led to believe is true in and about the US.
Thats just my understanding though. I could very well be wrong about all of it.

From what I've gathered it means you hate America and want all white straight cis Christians to hate themselves and share bathrooms with weirdos.
Which is weird to hear given what I know of my mom's history before me but I guess that's what a steady diet of a certain news channel does to you.
To me it means not swallowing the American exceptionalism Kool aid and realizing my experience and life is not the same as Pinks and she and others have a right to have their views acknowledged and addressed.
It means accepting that being told we are color blind and everyone is equal is a lie and I need to do my part to rectify that.
People don't like that because then they may have to acknowledge not only there but for the grace of God but maybe I'm not the hottest smartest person on the planet.
Nobody has more to fear from being woke than a mediocre straight white dude.

To me, it's partly recognizing that my personal ideas, concepts, way of looking at the world etc. just might not be accurate and sure as hell aren't universal. Yeah, surprise, it's not all about me.
The last two years have been really enlightening because I've learned - and I'm still learning - that a lot of the stuff I was taught or read or saw in the media was just flat not true. Incomplete at best and deliberate lying at worst. I've become horribly aware that so many of our institutions and laws were founded on and still exist to enshrine racism and sexism. Increasingly across the US, we are adding laws to once again condemn and restrict the LGBTQ community. Increasingly across the US, we are adding laws to once again limit women's reproductive autonomy.

A friend posted a comment (origin unknown) on this topic the other day:
"Some people use the word 'woke' as if it is supposed to be an insult. But mostly they use it because they can't spell empathetic, educated, or enlightened."
That seems pretty accurate.

Nobody has more to fear from being woke than a mediocre straight white dude. Real talk, I’ve been more open and honest here on these boards, knowing that most of you are White, than I have ever been in my life in “mixed company”. The fact that some of you are willing to really listen to my truths, things that have happened to me, my family and friends, and people I know…… and try to understand my perspective on some things, really does mean a lot to me. Honestly, if not for the posters here, I am pretty sure I would’ve said fuck it and given up on White America after these last few years….. and I’d have a bad attitude with people that haven’t necessarily done anything to me. I think I’ve been pretty honest here and there on the boards, about how I’ve struggled the last several years to not become the same kind of person I despise and look down on. That’s just not who I want to be, but there’s only so much a person can take before reacting some kind of way. So I keep praying about it. I pray about it because regardless of the horrible or crazy things people do “in the name of Christianity”, I know that MY God does not approve of hatred. So one of my prayers has become asking Him to help me not harbor hatred in my heart for people I don’t even know. I want to spread love in this world, not hatred. No matter how cliched or naive that sounds, it’s the truth. I just want to say thank you to you and some other posters here that have helped me continue to believe that all is not lost as far as me and mine trying to live safely in this country, and not just survive, but thrive. It’s still a little rough, but the work that you and others here are doing with yourselves and the children you are raising, and confronting racism and prejudices as you can as you live your lives, gives me a bit of hope for my grandchildren and their children. I worry about them more than I worry about me. Anyway, just thank you.

Probably started here. A Fox employee said executives at the network said they wanted to purposely air 'grievance' to 'get people boiled up': NYTExecutives at Fox News indicated to employees that they wanted to push a narrative that focused on "grievance," according to a report published Saturday by The New York Times. One current Fox employee said the network execs had a goal to highlight "the grievance, the stuff that would get people boiled up." The driving narrative, the employee suggested, was one that made viewers believe they're in danger. "They're coming for you, the Blacks are coming for you, the Mexicans are coming for you," the employee told The Times. Media Matters, a nonprofit media watchdog, has published reports accusing Fox News of fearmongering across a variety of issues, from terrorism at the southern border to critical race theory to the coronavirus pandemic. Polls have previously indicated that people who watch Fox News are likelier to believe former President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. They're also more likely to believe in vaccine misinformation. The influence Fox News, as the most-watched cable news channel in the US, has is felt widely, even in federal office. President Joe Biden has in private referred to Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch as "the most dangerous man in the world" and "one of the most destructive forces in the United States." According to The Times report, the network leverages viewer data to make decisions about its coverage. As Insider's Kelsey Vlamis reported, Fox News host Tucker Carlson relies on comprehensive "minute-by-minute" data that informs the network how viewers respond to different coverage. "He is going to double down on the white nationalism because the minute-by-minutes show that the audience eats it up," one former Fox employee who worked with Carlson told The Times. Fox reporters who covered Trump unfavorably consistently received low ratings, The Times reported. As did left-leaning guests. "They're all obsessed with the minute-by-minutes," another former Fox employee told The Times. "Every second that goes on that network now gets scrutinized." When reached for comment, a Fox News Media spokesperson referred Insider to the following statement published in The Times: "FOX News Media has grown through strategic innovation, redirecting investments in journalism to encompass more than 50 percent of the budget while expanding our footprint beyond one legacy linear network to eight thriving platforms. As a result, we've doubled our audience, achieved unrivaled results, and have become the destination that more Democrats and Independents choose for their news coverage while our competitors have lost dramatic levels of viewership. We couldn't be prouder of our entire team, whose commitment to excellence in journalism and opinion has led FOX News Media to all-time ratings records and delivered the best in class to our viewers." A Fox employee said executives at the network said they wanted to purposely air 'grievance' to 'get people boiled up': NYT

Here is an example of being "woke" at my workplace. When there are introductions done at virtual meetings, the person leading starts: "Hello, my name is Gira. I use she/her pronouns. I am a portly 46 year old woman with a pixie hair cut. Feel invited to provided comments verbally or in the chat." Another example of being "woke" is using pictures of non-white students on your social media, marketing, etc A third example of being "woke" when teaching is to just make generic questions. So, rather than saying "After the big game, Sally ran down on the football field and ran the length of the field three times. How many feet did Sally run?" You say, "what is 360x3?" Because by using a football field, you are making all sorts of assumptions, even in a college town, that shouldn't be made...
Or..this is from my experience teaching. Music is really still an afluent, white activity. When I went to classes to be taught how to teach a certain method, we were taught these phrases to explain how often to practice..like "We practice every day that we eat. We practice every day we brush our teeth. We practice every day that ends in the letter "y.".. Which is fine, until you start teaching poor kids that don't always eat every day, don't have a toothbrush at home, or don't know their letters. That was my "woke" moment. Where I learned that simple and direct is best.
ETA: I still do make gaffes. I have one kid that is not Christian. Probably Hindu. I made an analogy that used a Christmas tree. I apologized afterwards for doing that..and made a note I have to find something different for the future. ETA: It's also using non-dead white men music, as I call it, to teach music. While I don't have music for every single world culture, you bet your bottom line I teach the kids the Lift Every Voice and Sing for MLK day. Or Hispanic songs for 3Kings day.

If you are "woke" you sympathize with people less fortunate than yourself. You also believe that EVERYONE has rights...the same rights as any white person. I would certainly rather be 'woke' than be someone who had to be told how to act & think!

"woke" is my cis white male doctor son-in-law (as he states 'all the privileges') who pays more attention to what and how he diagnoses POC, LBGTQ+, and women (basically, anyone but white guys). He says he always asks himself 'if this was a white male, would I question these symptoms/behavior?'. FWIW, he has many LBGTQ+ friends and family and friends and family of color, including his wife, my DD1. But he says he still asks himself that question just to be on the safe side. He teaches about white male privilege to others at the hospital. Not all of them like it.

I too am grateful to Pink and others here for the ability to have an honest conversation. Some of us may not have the opportunity to interact with people of different colors, economic realities or religions. That's no bad but many life situations just don't create an opportunity for experience and conversation across differences. It's no secret I live in Houston, in one of the lowest-income, most densely-populated and ethnically diverse parts of Houston. Even here you can wall yourself off in a little cube of white privilege, or at least try. I am so damn lucky to have been invited to parties, dinners, churches, where I was way more than a bit uncomfortable, unsure of the expectations, not sure about what to wear, say ?? I've learned the correct way to dress up for dedication of a new black, evangelical church and that the service will be 3 hours long. I've learned how to use chopsticks and consume soup dumplings, and how to show respect at a Buddhist temple. I've learned that I can read an English translation of the Koran, but true followers of Islam must read it in Arabic. And thanks to an amazing woman who invited me to her home, I got to hear a lot about the real experience of being a person of color in America. It's complicated but I still think we can make it work. At least, I hope and pray we can

At least, I hope and pray we can I think we can too, and I hope and pray for the same. Imo, all it takes is being respectful of one another as human beings. The fact that there are different ethnicities and cultures is interesting to me. I am seriously curious about people and different cultures and ways of life. I see people that are different from me that are willing to share with me their lives and cultures as interesting, not negative. My curiosity is why I wish I could’ve lived my life as a traveler, being blessed to live among people all over the world that are different from me and learning about their cultures and ways of life. It doesn’t look like that will happen for me in this life, maybe in my next one. I think I believe that this life is all I have though, so I’m not sure about having another life to do something different.

why couldn't you travel in this life? to read that from you makes me so sad. I feel like having been able to travel as much as I did (for work) in my early/mid 20s, I learned SO MUCH about other ways of life than the "American Dream" (spoiler: it wasn't all that dreamy...) how I grew up. I can't even fathom how different a person I'd be today without that early adventuring.

I can't even fathom how different a person I'd be today without that early adventuring. Why couldn’t I travel in this life? Well, I had my first baby when I was 19yo and was a SAHM for the next few years. There was no money at that time to try to explore the world. Another baby and a separation from my ex-husband, with a divorce a couple years later, and I was a single Mom with 2 small children. A few years after that, I got hired at my current job, and I could better provide for my children, but the day to day expenses of raising them by myself (their Dad was not consistently paying child support) and although I did take my children on trips or pay for them to go on trips with my family when I couldn’t get off work to go with them myself, funding traveling for me to see the world like I wanted to, was far down on my list of my priorities. My adult life has been just doing what I need to do with the choices I’ve made. I’m not upset about it, because I love my children and don’t regret having them, so my life has just been what it was since I was 19yo and got married, pregnant with my first baby. Now I’m 50yo and as much as I’d still really like to travel the world, I feel like it’s more important to try to be able to retire comfortably ASAP. And just typing that last sentence made my eyes start watering for whatever reason, so Imma end it there.

hugs, lady. I think (from what I can tell from your posts) that there's space in the budget to retire comfortably and still also travel some. please don't sell yourself short here.

Pink,
I don't know if this will help, but I can totally identify. World travel is something we gave up in exchange for having the Missy.
The only way I can see us prioritizing world travel is if my life span is significantly shortened. Which, I don't want to be in that situation, either.
I have traveled a few places: England and Central Europe, and Canada...But, it's not enough. It was never the plan to never travel abroad with DH.
It is what it is.

50 is young. If you really want to there is lots of time for travel. My favourite quote; If you know what you want and are willing to do the work to get it, the Universe will conspire to give it to you.

To address the OT- sadly, to me, "woke" is one of those knee-jerk terms applied by people on the extreme right to anyone who doesn't agree with them 100%. It's just part of the polarization that's happened in this country. Extreme liberals have their own terms to categorize people who don't agree 100% with THEM. I'm trying to find my way in the middle- I've learned so much from podcasts after "Black Lives Matter" started (generally news or business but with focus on minority entrepreneurs, minorities in the workplace, etc.), from posts here and from discussions in CRT sessions with church leadership. It made me realize how much I take for granted and how narrow my definition of "normal" can be if it's based only on my own background and experience. 50 is young. If you really want to there is lots of time for travel. My favourite quote; If you know what you want and are willing to do the work to get it, the Universe will conspire to give it to you. Ah, travel. I joke that I've spent years trying to make up for the fact that I missed the European camping trip after my junior year in HS led by two of the teachers, because it just wasn't in the budget. I made 2 trips to Europe before I met the Ex (who had too many other ways to spend my money) and then was sort of "benched" after DS was born and we lived in a HCOL Area. Fortunately, I got into the international end of the insurance business and that was good for the occasional business trip to London, Brussels, Munich, Delhi and Bangalore. Second DH and I both put a high priority on travel and, with careful attention to costs and judicious use of loyalty programs, we did a lot. I got more interested in history as I visited other places, especially Europe, saw how the average people lived in India, have seen the damages of war in London, visited the Theresienstadt death camp, been in places where I don't understand the language and/or my lily-white face clearly marks me as "not from around here". It does broaden your perspective. Pink, I hope you CAN travel sometime. I'm 69 and leaving for Germany (with a side trip to Malta) next week. Don't give up yet!

hugs, lady. I think (from what I can tell from your posts) that there's space in the budget to retire comfortably and still also travel some. please don't sell yourself short here. @pinkcshmere, You can always travel hack like I do and do it on the cheap. You're still young. My mom didn't start international traveling until she retired at 65. She has a couple timeshares and did quite a bit of domestic and Caribbean trips while she was working, but the last decade she's been going all over the world.
I would bump it up the priority list if this is something you really want to do. I'm not typically one to say this, but YOLO.

I live in north jersey and many people are either stopping or nervous about going into Manhattan. Giving up long established shopping, cultural and just enjoyment of ‘the city’ because of the growing crimes . Even in touristy areas like Times Square etc The Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg published a letter when he first came into office this January. Stated crimes that didn’t cause injury or death wouldn’t be prosecuted. Similar in San Francisco Apparently these stances are because prosecutors (and others?) see prosecution of non injury crimes as impacting minorities unfairly. Would this be considered ‘woke’ ??

Realizing that our prison/law enforcement impacts minorities unfairly might be considered woke. I'd say it's obvious, atrocious and needs a complete overhaul. It might be/will be painful, but the national data tell a very significant story that our justice system isn't just failing minorities its targeting them. But the way you stated your post - non-violent crimes up, can't even go there anymore to experience culture, such a travesty! That loss/situation/current short term issue must be more important than trying to stop over a century of abuse of minorities by law enforcement is exactly how the term has been weaponized against poc. I'm sure you didn't mean it like that - but youre talking about how sad it is to miss out on a perk when any interaction with law enforcement can be life ending for poc. Maybe the city has the wrong approach right now - but look at the reason and advocate for other approaches. We can't keep the status quo.

Evidently I am way under water on prevailing woke standards In answer to your question, I believe the Prosecutor's over all presentation of positions is basically woke at the least and a malfeasance of his swearing in for the job where the Prosecutor says they will uphold the laws of the office. In not prosecuting robberies on people walking on the street, carjacking an occupied or unoccupied vehicle or robbing an house where the occupant is not home or establishment is not woke. If you charge a person, investigate and find circumstances do not fit the charge, then dismiss it. It is a miscarriage of Justice to do otherwise. Citizens expect some sort of justice when they are violated. It should not just be dismissed if you are not physically harmed. Or is that being too woke by the victim? Woke started earlier than what posters are presenting here. It was liberals "disappearing" even fellow democrats who violated the woke views and standards and became the "woke police" for America. Conservatives just fought back and show the hypocrosity of the situation. It is all well and good to fight for people of color and sexual orientation or whatever situation floats your boat, but people who disagree are not automatically being woke Or at least for me, people claiming only Republicans and conservatives are trying to stop wokeism by turning the woke attack around on them is just too simplistic of a response. Everyone has to look inward and decide and not characterize people who do not agree with you as being woke deniers

I think it is very hard to find that line for prosecutors. I very much understand that interactions with police can be deadly. Baltimore has taken that hands off stance and it hasn't worked out well for them. I don't know what the answer is. They know the cops have orders to stand down except in the face of like murder in front of them and so all kinds of crap that isn't acceptable in other places goes on.
Unfortunately avoiding prosecuting petty stuff in Baltimore has turned into a giant slippery slope. Sure don't give tickets for nuisance things but how do you avoid that turning into gangs of juveniles roaming the harbor and jumping tourists?
I don't think it benefits anyone if people fear for their lives and therefore don't attend events, museums, etc and put dollars into the economy.
The nuisance stuff clogs up the courts, taxes the poor, etc. But it shouldn't be okay for gangs to just jump people and beat someone so badly they lose vision.
