Except he only has 3 weeks left. Yeah, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations is his 4th math class. My non-math brain was just calling it Calc 4. He loves Physics math, but is hating Calc 2 so much. He is kicking himself for not taking Calc BC in high school and testing out of both of them and just starting with 3. He took AP Calc and got a 5 on the test, but still started with Calc 1 in college for a review. Does he have access to his college kids who can tutor him via zoom - its much easier to have someone explain it to him that has worked on it recently. Good luck The college has a peer tutoring system where they have paid students for basically every class. He claims the appointments are hard to come by, but I'm skeptical he's really tried. Personally I wouldn't want to redo it this summer, especially at 2 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Our CPA just finished our taxes. Apparently DH's unpaid leave for most of last year bumped us into a lower tax bracket so we'll be seeing a $2k refund and about $1.5k of the last stimulus. Somehow we also qualify to put $6k/each into Roth whereas in 2019 we could only put $1900 in DH's. I need to see if our CPA can help me understand this better. Maybe someone here can point me to an easy place to read about the tax brackets. I'm a math person but haven't spent enough time in the tax codes

Well, the ability to make direct Roth contributions start to phase out at about 198K MAGI for married filing joint, so you must have managed to get under that last year. It drops about $600 for every $1000 your MAGI is over that until it's completely phased out.

If we put more into his 401k, will that lower our MAGI? We currently max mine and only put a little in his because his fees are much higher. We could put more into his esp if that gives us more Roth access.

We have Cadillac low deductible health insurance that we can choose instead of HSA which always puts us ahead with DH's health issues.

No idea what my 4yo would choose, but my 8yo would pick Legos, HP stuff, maybe some Badogans, and he’d try to convince to he could buy an iPhone - and then I’d have to laugh and tell him no. Ooh, and his friends all have Nintendo Switch game systems, so probably that as well. Off topic, but I had no idea how expensive Lego sets can be! My coworker is really into those fancy sets and has a shop set up in his garage where he builds them....think Star Wars, movie sets, etc. He spent $900 on one set! If he had gotten a stimulus check (he makes too much money), I have no doubt he would have spent it on Legos, lol! Yes - they can get stupid expensive. My son likes the Harry Potter and Star Wars sets. When the HP diagonal alley set came out he asked about it - I looked at the $400 price tag and laughed and told him not happening.

Does anyone think the government will request (demand) return of this?

All this math talk made me go find my college transcript. I didn’t remember Calc II as being one of my least favorite or harder math classes, but apparently I have fuzzy memory on the difficulty level as it’s one of the math classes I got a B in. Probability & Statistics was my least favorite - though it didn’t help that the professor in general had a bias towards the engineers and computer science majors who had to take the class for their majors.

The desk I bought with my stimulus check is now sitting in my home. I haven't moved anything yet to the dedicated genealogy space.
I have to add a printer to the dedicated computer because it can go on a mac and the other printer can't go on a mac.

To show how much attention I've been paying to anything, is it supposed to be $1400 per person? I just got the check and I haven't got a clue.

With DH's SSDI no longer contributing to my bottom line, I think it's safe to say my income is probably below the level. Cool. Now I can pay my credit card bill and go to the bookstore! Which is what got me in trouble in the first place but no matter. BOOKS!

Enjoy your books.

DH's unpaid leave bumped us down a tax bracket, so we will get $475 of this last stimulus instead of zero. We will also get a $2600 tax refund. And we have room to put $6k each in Roth compared to the $1400 for only DH for 2019. Winning!
A conversation with our tax preparer makes me think that I should switch my split from 6% 401k and 5% Roth 401k to 11% 401k. And if I up DH's 401k which is $100/check, I may be able to maintain this tax bracket and give us Roth room for a few more years.
I did a grown up thing and made us our first appt with a financial planner at the beg of May and began pulling together our documentation. Hopefully she will help us figure out the icing on the cake. Her fee is been $500 and 1500 which seems good enough. Several of my colleagues recommend her which means she is familiar with my benefit package.

Good thing I didn't just hand it over. It looks like it might go towards retaking Calc 2 this summer. Take it from a math major - calc 2 was HARD! It was like a whole new way of thinking or something. He passed!! He ended up with a C+ in that class and A's in everything else. Now I can finally start planning our summer a little. Everything was so up in the air until he found out.

A good friend received her $600 a while back.....and then received a checking account deposit of $1400 when those were handed out. Called me lat night to tell me she has now received a letter from the IRS telling her there would be a deposit to her checking account within 7 days for another $1400. Anyone else ? certainly not me.

It says you are going to get the $$$, but you get the money a few weeks before the letter.

WTF? My youngest had $1400 deposited into her account. We don’t qualify and I claim her as a dependent. I’m not sure if they are just randomly sending out stimulus or what. I don’t even know who to reach out to about this
If they do not take it back, I will donate it. We do not need it, we aren’t e titled to it and I have no idea why she received it. She actually received it in April but I don’t check her account all the time.

I received an "extra" $1400 check. I called the bank and they handled it. I knew better than to spend it. It was gone within minutes of our phone call.
I have received a letter for the $600 check and one for the $1400 check. They come long after the deposits and do say you may already have received the funds.

Funny enough, I got the letter in the mail today that she received it but it hit her account a month ago I’m going to sit on it and see if I can figure out how to find out why she received it. I can’t imagine a dependent is eligible when the parents aren’t

Hey it’s magic money anyway so we shouldn’t worry? Until we need to repay with taxes (or inflation)

And here's more magic money. www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefitThe FCC is giving $50/month (no duration specified) to families and households "struggling to afford Internet service". I know that families that didn't have broadband before were hit hard when schools closed. BUT- one "proof" that you're part of the struggling households is if you have kids getting free or reduced-price lunches. As we've discussed in previous threads, plenty of schools are able to sign up all kids, probably based on local demographics, without regard to need. So.. now you've got a group getting free lunches they don't need who now qualify for subsidies to their broadband that they don't need. I read about it in a news article noting that the major firms were telling people they could get it only if they "upgraded" service to some package that cost so much it wiped out the $50. Our tax dollars at work. Not.

Do you realize that not all homes have internet, let alone broadband? It's either because people can't afford it or they live where they can't get reception. I don't even know if dial up is an option any more but it would not support going to school via Zoom.
My niece in law has a college student who signed up for her summer class. It is all online. As is usual in summer school, it's more intense than during the semester because it's over less weeks. Two requirements for the class are to be there during the lectures (Tues and Thurs evenings for 2 hours) and to do the tutorials. This is a real time class and was stated as such in the catalog.
A student has now "attended" a lecture or done a tutorial for the 3 weeks the class has been ongoing. Last week he asked for a meeting during her office hours. He told her he is requesting an accommodation because his internet access is poor where he is spending the summer. She said it was fine for their meeting. He also asked that she upload the lectures so he can download them and watch at a different time. That isn't how this class works and she hasn't recorded the previous lectures. He also wants credit for the first 3 weeks.

Dial up still exists. Our landline was with Verizon, and we spent many years requesting broadband. They did not want to spend the $ to run new lines, so we had to go with cell service for our internet. With 2 kids in school we dial up was not a viable option (even before virtual learning), and have paid mightily for it. Reception is usually pretty good, but TV gets shoddy if another device connects while streaming.
