I have been spending like crazy since March of 2020 when everything closed down. I couldn't go out, or do vacations, so I shopped. I have nothing left to buy lol. I bought a hot tub right before covid, refurnished my entire house this past fall, gained 20 lbs from ordering food, then created an at home gym to lose the weight, spoiled the crap out of my dogs, gave to charity, etc. I would like to remodel my laundry room, but I need some serious plumbing and contractor help, and I am having trouble hiring someone....I guess because of covid. I am also converting my detached garage into a studio for my elderly mother, so that will cost a lot. Maybe I'll buy an ATV or something....I don't know, I'll figure it out somehow.... Do you have estimates on converting the garage? Is the work contracted yet? I hear the cost of lumber and drywall is way up. I go back and forth on whether or not I should do some minor remodeling - but the when I was arguing with myself this am about it, I decided that I should wait until things cool down a bit. I could add an elderly parent to my household without needing a remodel though... and it is not like you can just buy a different house right now - the market is too tight. Why does remodeling the laundry room require plumbing changes? Could a handyman handle the plumbing changes? My DH is not a plumber but he could move the plumbing around and re-connect the sink.

Hubs and I are to get it and I assume MIL and DD. The couple that rent from us, again, she is getting nothing or her DD. She has no income, filed a 0 return this year. She was excited again, went in to look, not eligible nor the daughter. I don't understand that at all. I think he is finally going to get one. But its people like that, that need it. I have no idea who she can contact. I'm betting there are others like her. That doesn't sound right. I found this: www.forbes.com/sites/terinaallen/2020/05/25/stimulus-checks-waiting-for-people-with-little-income-and-no-income/?sh=3468a6bb1a45Maybe you can help her figure out where to sign up? Otherwise, I'd contact a congressman over that. I agree. If her ex is claiming the DD on his tax return, then that stimulus part would go to him. But she is still eligible for her own payments from 2020. She may have to wait until she files 2021 to get this one, though. There should be someone who works with low-income people that could review how she filled out her 2020 income tax return. She could file an amended return if she did it incorrectly. But it may just be that the IRS is backed up and hasn't gotten to it. I'm assuming that she and the guy aren't married?

I received a $2800 stimulus deposit in a bank account I have never used with the IRS. It should not have come to me. I received what I was owed last week.
Called the bank. Somebody screwed up the account number on their tax return or somewhere. The money came in with my account number and a different name. The bank will return the funds to the IRS and contact the customer so they can fix their account number. She said they will not have to wait for a paper check. I told her I don't want the IRS taking money from my account in the future that I don't owe because of the other person using my account number. That is why she is contacting the customer.

Surprised that we just got our stimulus check and it was the full amount. The first 2 were based on our 2019 return and were reduced due to our AGI. Would have been $0 this time but they based it on our 2020 return which was less AGI and just recently filed.

I don't have estimates yet. The first contractor is coming out next week, and I heard construction costs are way up. My laundry room has never really been plumbed correctly, and there are remains of an old utility sink that need to go. I could probably go with a handyman, but it just seems like no one is available right now.

My mom is going to make the payments on the HELOC though, and it will still be cheaper than the ridiculous rent she is paying now. And even if she can't make the payments, I can. I just refinanced my home with a really low rate, and my mortgage is so low its now the same as I paid for a one bedroom apartment back in 2005. I was lucky to buy my home during the recession, so I paid about 1/3 of what people are paying now in my neighborhood.

Apparently it's a thing in our upper middle class grade school to give your kid 'his/her' stimulus money. DD12 has at least 3 friends in her class talking about what they are going to buy. Another parent happened to bring it up in a conversation that she was letting her kid spend it too. She didn't notice that I didn't answer. Fairly awkward when DD12 asked what we were doing with hers. I don't really want to tell her we don't qualify as I'm not 100% that she will keep it to herself. Thankfully, she quickly laughed and said I know there is no way you're giving me that amount of money, and we moved on.
She's been dancing around the question of my salary the last few months, and I guess a couple of weeks ago DH told her his but that's slightly different since he makes $15/hour teaching preschool. We've been a fairly open book about how unfair it is that daddy gets paid so much less when his job is super important too. Plus, we've talked about how my actuarial exams and now designation means a much higher salary. I figure I'll get into more detail as we're having college conversations late hs yrs. We've already talked about how we will help but she will be expected to shoulder most of it. We want her to have skin in the game like we did so she takes it seriously. Then, we plan to help knock off loans after graduation.
Salaries also came up with DD8 when we stopped to get gas and she noticed the numbers spinning for the first time. She was amazed that it cost $55 to fill the tank, and I know that seems like a fortune to her. So then she got a little worried about if we can afford that all the times we get gas. I explained to her that gas is one of the smaller bills that we cover - houses cost $1000/month, cars cost $300 and we make enough to cover those too. I always love these conversations of planting seeds and shaping their mindsets.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by such behavior. If my parents got such a thing it would have been used for family stuff like towards a vacation or put into savings for college.

No problem here with spending it on foolish pleasures. If you're on SS/SSDI/SSI or are a vet or a railroad retiree, it's not likely there's been money issued to you unless you've filed a tax return, and maybe not even then.

Had stimulus been such a thing when I was growing up, my parents would have put it all towards bills. My mom was a waitress and I made more when I got a professional job at the IRS (i.e. non clerical) than he ever made in his life. We lived pay check to pay check. They said they didn't start saving for retirement until after we left home. They did not pay for our college education because there was no money.
The money means different things to different people. For some it will really help and I come from that stock.
For others, it's a vacation or whatever.
My splurge will be a desk which will cost around $300. Part of it went to pay for a sump pump.

Gwen asked if she got hers. I laughed. I did buy a proper art desk for her which was $150. That's also for me so I can finally be rid of the plywood monstrosity that was bought when I was in college. She hoarded it and DH let her when I first attempted to be rid of it by buying DH a new desk.

With Congress in recess for the next two weeks, there's nobody except the president who can force IRS to release funds to SS/SSDI/SSI/VA/RR retirees. I don't see any money forthcoming before April 15. It certainly won't be in my account this week because there's no "pending" deposit showing up in my account. For a Wednesday deposit, it would have shown pending on Friday.

Abby asked why and we said cause you're 6. No way on God's green earth would I give a 6 year old or 10 year old $1400 to blow. If Gwen was 18 and in college I might. $1400 would have been a lot of textbook and gas money and BC pills. We got it set aside in savings. Some will go to our family vacation which appears in sight this year. DH explained even he doesn't get $1400 to blow. It's intended for family use. I DID cheekily suggest we buy a $1400 metal chicken for our yard just so I could outcompete my brother with his stimulus tortoise. DH said no.😠

Carrot has zero clue about the stimulus. My college kid mentioned a while back that he thought college students would be getting it this time so I'm sure he was hoping, but was smart enough to not actually come out and ask for "his" portion. I'm undecided what to do with his as he has 100% of his costs at school covered and it would probably just go towards eating out despite having a meal plan and online gaming.
I've been thinking I'll take out the amount needed to cover his next car insurance bill and his dental bill (probably about $400 total) and giving him the rest, but not sure yet. If I do, it won't be until Fall when he goes back. He won't have a meal plan next year.

MPL - for a college student with tuition handled, I'd be tempted to earmark it for a future vehicle.
Drama - I must see a pic of a stimulus tortoise.
Piecing conversations together, I think one classmate's money is going toward a purebred dog from a breeder. That wouldn't be my choice as of course rescuing is better, but this particular kiddo is a favorite of mine and she's had a tough year with anxiety and panic attacks, so I'm happy she will have a furbaby to love on her.

The first $3,000 will go toward DD's hospital bill. After that who knows? I liked to spend like crazy, but DH is a saver (party pooper). What does it mean ‘first’ $3000? Aren’t we getting $1400 per person as one time deal?

Do you have a link for that? I would like one as well. ty Google images has soooooo many to chose from! THIS looks like a girl with a beard! What’s the fascination with soy boys and snowflakes? THIS probably likes 14 y/old girly looking teens...not used well cougars. 🤦♀️ Don’t you women forget what MEN looks like? 🤷♀️

We received the first check in the mail, but we moved before they mailed out the second one and we never received it. We filed for the rebate with our taxes and it reduced the size of the payment I have to send to the Feds. I was expecting the third stimulus check to be lost in the mail with the second, but it arrived today.
We owe to both the feds and to the state of Maryland this year, so I will be paying for a portion of it with their own money. Not really the intended use of the stimulus, but with the ridiculous amount of money we are throwing at house projects, we are already providing plenty of stimulus to the local economy.

I'm having a FOMO attack on the not spending wisely issue. I don't qualify for a payment this time so there is nothing to spend, wisely or not. Now I could just unwisely spend part of my salary but there is nothing I either want or need. So, no spending and FOMO...

I know he and his wife had bought some not cheap toys recently that I'm sure came from some of the stimulus money. When my mom made a remark about me repairing my car instead of just buying a new one (I can afford too, but especially since I'm still WFH I like no payment) I told her to tell him I'll gladly take some of his stimulus money to put towards a car - mine is just going to replace the income I lost last year thank you very much.

Well, so far I've plowed $400+ of our stimulus money into surgery and post-op care for the cat. I think we're being billed the "nasty cat from hell" surcharge. I paid $50 for a post-op follow-up which consisted of her taking a quick peak at his rear end while a 200 lb vet tech held him down. When I asked if he was healed enough to remove his Elizabethan collar, she said, "Yes, you remove it when he gets home-I'm not risking my staff getting badly bitten". I can't blame them - 16 lbs of completely ticked off cat with massive canines can easily result in sutures.
