I'm wondering what will happen to the worldometer numbers once the CDC stops getting data....
I think the CDC is one of the sources...
I like how Trump discredited the WHO and "withdrew" from it - so I doubt we'll be seeing or hearing much from that source... and now he's pulled the rug out from under the CDC...
I'm betting Covid19 will vanish from America in 6 weeks or less!

Expect thousands and thousands of military troops, tanks, military jet flyovers and with trump sitting on a throne on the lead float because he's a war-time president. Let's hope there is a Ferris Bueller in the crowd who will jump on one of the floats and bring some good entertainment to the parade. Otherwise it's just another trump shot show.

I'll say again... that number for us hasn't changed from 15-16K in months... and still 3-6K people die a week. It is not accurate. LOTS of states have not published data on hospitalizations etc. consistently. I'm sure the reporting will be flawless once it is handled directly by the Trump administration. 🙈🙉🙊

it doesn't show up there, actually. I find that puzzling. the WHO is a big source for them. I am wondering if the hospitals are reporting to the WHO.

If you go into Worldometer on the page that list data by state, the next to the last column is source. These are mostly the state's health department. So that data should remain the same.

so, if I am understanding this right, the net impact of this decision is to deprive the CDC of information.
will someone explain to me how that will make any difference at all?\
I mean, Trump is already castrating the CDC. which is a terrible move in a pandemic. but how will this change anything?

Only for the worse. The cdc could possibly put things in perspective since there are smart medical doctors and scientists working on this. Deprive them of this and give it to the incompetents in the White House means that won’t happen

that is not going to work. the CDC barely says anything already. it has been that way for months. we are relying on websites and local doctors. we don't need a federal response at this point, because we know we won't get one.

I suspect it is an attempt to control the narrative. I agree that it won’t work. Because if what the are saying is at odds with the facts, it puts the governors in a tough spot. They will be unable to ignore the facts on the ground once the get bad enough

Trump administration seeking to block funding for CDC, contact tracing and testing in new relief bill: report
The Trump administration is attempting to block billions of dollars for contact tracing, additional testing and other coronavirus mitigation efforts that would potentially be included in Congress's next coronavirus relief package, officials involved in the negotiations told The Washington Post. According to the Post's sources, the administration is also trying to block billions in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that GOP senators want to give the agency as it continues to battle COVID-19 on the front lines. The administration also wanted to take out billions of dollars that would go to the Pentagon and State Department to allow them to better combat the pandemic both domestically and internationally, the Post reports Complete article here: Trump administration seeking to block funding for CDC, contact tracing and testing in new relief bill: report

Today's numbers for U.S. 614,246 cases 26,064 deaths over 10,000 deaths in NY state Three months and seven days later the numbers are as follows: 4,149,563 Cases 146,949 Deaths Quotes of president trump: January 22, 2020:“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” January 30, 2020:“We only have five people. Hopefully, everything’s going to be great. They have somewhat of a problem, but hopefully, it’s all going to be great. But we’re working with China, just so you know, and other countries very, very closely. So it doesn’t get out of hand. But it’s, you know, it’s something that we have to be very, very careful with, right? We have to be very careful.” February 10, 2020:“Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that’s true. But we’re doing great in our country. China, I spoke with President Xi, and they’re working very, very hard. And I think it’s going to all work out fine.” February 11, 2020:“In our country, we only have, basically, 12 cases and most of those people are recovering and some cases fully recovered. So it’s actually less.” February 26, 2020:“When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” February 28, 2020:“Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. … One of my people came up to me and said, ‘Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia.’ That didn’t work out too well. They couldn’t do it. They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything, they tried it over and over. … And this is their new hoax.” March 5, 2020:“Gallup just gave us the highest rating ever for the way we are handling the CoronaVirus situation. The April 2009-10 Swine Flu, where nearly 13,000 people died in the U.S., was poorly handled.” March 10, 2020:“This was unexpected. … And it hit the world. And who knows what is yet to come. The stupid quotes coming out of his mouth are coming fast and furiously. Hard to top the injecting bleach or using UV light inside the body. But I have hopes he can do better Several days ago he insisted to Chris Wallace, “I’ll bet you couldn’t even answer the last five questions.” Now he has revealed the most difficult of these questions.
“The last questions are much more difficult,” he said. “Like a memory question. It’s, uh, like you’ll go, ‘Person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ So they say, ‘Could you repeat that?’ So I said, ‘Yeah.’ So it’s ‘person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ ‘Okay, that’s very good.’”
It seems perhaps unfair, given Trump’s hours of daily television consumption, that 40 percent of the words he had to repeat involved television. Nonetheless, it is an achievement. Of sorts. Though I would argue that Chris Wallace probably could repeat those words as well.
“The doctors said very few people can do that, very few people get that,” Trump elaborated, with evident pride. It seems as if the actual test here is whether or not a person who passes the dementia screening boasts about his performance in public as if it is proof of his genius, rather than evidence that his doctors suspected he is suffering serious cognitive impairment.
I saw a meme today that said Obama bragged half as much about getting a Nobel Peace Prize as Trump did passing a cognitive test. Sad that this is what it has come to. They need to enact the 25th amendment.

If yes, trump needs to take it again with different questions if he wants to continue to brag he aced the test and is a stable genius.

For sheer idiocy, as well as the potential for serious harm, the bleach comment stands by itself, IMHO. Bragging about passing a test meant to screen for dementia just shows how much of a narcissist he is, and that is something I did not need any further confirmation to know. But, it is amusing that he needs to brag about that. If you have an Ivy League education, passing it is easy, unless you have early dementia. Trump just needs to tell everyone how smart he is. Real smart people don't.

It is unlikely he has dementia. But, he is the most psychologically unfit president we have ever had, and should be removed on that basis alone. He will cause the deaths of 100k people because of it. Remember when 10 dead Americans was cause for endless hearings.

Historically, that is a pretty high bar for him to clear. Let him celebrate. He deserves it! We should even give him a cookie.

As a physician, given his propensity to elevate everything he does to the bestest ever, this is not even in the top 5 Trump quotes. Well, excuse meeeeee for expecting more from the president of the United States!

This immediately made me think of the children's book by Mo Willems: The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? - Trump is the Pigeon. Book trailer video

*CDC states 12,469 Americans died of the flu from April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010 Trump’s bizarre effort to tag Obama’s swine flu response as ‘a disaster’For comparison: Between March and July 2020 over 150,000* people have died in the U.S. from the covid-19 virus. *The site linked in the OP states 153,848 people have died from the virus in the U.S. So how's all that death working out for you, trump?

Whoa. The US just surpassed 155,000 deaths. That's 10,000 deaths since July 19/20th (so about 10 days give or take 1 day). It doesn't seem right that there should be so many deaths per day this late in the game. Damn. Added: just saw Tennesseer's post. Wow. Trump managed to kill 10,000 Americans in 10 days - it took Obama a whole year to kill that many people. MAGA!

It looks like the uptick in daily deaths across the US started on July 20/21st (which might be some catch up from the weekend...as there's fewer deaths reported on the weekends). That puts the end of June and the 4th of July weekend as the prime time for people having gotten the virus (so they could get sick and die 20 days later). OK, I'm gonna have to go look for some time lines - what's the average and median times for people from the time they "actually acknowledge" they are sick (or test positive) and their death.... (I'm working under the assumption that people get the virus and don't actually "know" they are sick - until they actually are sick enough for them to think "hey, I think I'm actually sick... and it's not just I worked out too hard, or allergies, or I had too much to drink, or whatever..." ) This discusses the lag time: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/why-covid-death-rate-down/613945/and if I'm reading it correctly (and it's little info graphic) approximately up to 6 days (when exposure has happened) and then up to 14 days till death, once symptoms start and then up to another 7 days for the death certificate to be counted. So, it seems likely the exposure for these death spike around jul 20/21st probably did happen in the weeks before before and over the 4th of July weekend I'm guessing Florida/Texas/Georgia have another 10 days or so of elevated deaths.

Many people are in the hospital for a few weeks before they die. So to me, based on my experience, there is a 1 month lag from infections spiking to seeing the spike in deaths. It also works the other way. Deaths will remain high for 3-4 weeks while infections decline
