Many people are in the hospital for a few weeks before they die. So to me, based on my experience, there is a 1 month lag from infections spiking to seeing the spike in deaths. It also works the other way. Deaths will remain high for 3-4 weeks while infections decline Not a happy thing. But thanks for the info. I do not enjoy being a bearer of bad news, but this is the reality of our current situation. At least with knowledge, we can at least have an idea of where we are going, and if case counts decrease, we can at least have an idea of when we should see some improvement.

One of the world's greatest prognosticators who ever lived. Even greater than Nostradamus and Miss Cleo.
According to the Worldometer in the opening post the stats are as follows as of this moment for the United States:
Coronavirus Cases: 5,595,459
Deaths: 173,480

trump/Pence were a disaster in handling Covid-19. Polling at the time showed disastrous approval numbers. 173,480 people died unnecessarily and through incompetence!

Under trump's handling of Covid-19, 173,772 deaths in the U.S. during the past 5 months versus 12,000 deaths during the 2009-2010 U.S. flu season.

It is not Covid related, but this stood out to me. While I do not know whether the website cost anything like $5B, I do know that trump is known for not paying his contractors. Everything is cheap if you are a crook and don't pay your bills!!

Too bad he forgot to add China would eventually have tested more people total than us and that we'd be 18th in the Worldometer rankings today for testing per capita.

A HS/college friend has finally been taken off the ventilator after 4 weeks! May have permanent lung damage. Had open heart surgery 11 years ago at 57 so very fortunate so far. Wife also got the virus and is slowly recovering.
He has been a Sikh since 1976, so vegan and serious practitioner/teacher of Kundalini yoga. Perhaps that’s why he made it through. So far.

No big deal. It’s all blue states restricting travel from red states. People in red states don’t want to go there anyway

Woo hoo! According to the world o meter America crossed the 210,000 deaths line (only took 11/12 days) today 9/27. AND the world crossed the 1 million death line. America wins big with having nearly a quarter of the world wide deaths! MAGA! MAGA! MAGA! Americans sure know the importance of dying for their country! (Is trump still using war rhetoric for dealing with the pandemic?)

From Pew Research. What Lessons Do Americans See for Humanity in the Pandemic?
When an event has as much impact as the coronavirus outbreak – disrupting billions of lives and leading to more than 1 million deaths around the world – it’s natural for people to ponder big questions. Is this just a random occurrence, or is there something more at play? Is it all part of God’s plan? Or, at a more worldly level, can this experience teach us any truths about humanity? We sought to explore these questions in a recent Pew Research Center survey, conducted in mid-July on the Center’s American Trends Panel. First, we asked people: Do you believe there is a lesson or a set of lessons for humankind to learn from the coronavirus outbreak? And if so, do you think these lessons were sent by God, or not? A large majority of U.S. adults (86%) say there is some kind of lesson or set of lessons for humankind to learn from the pandemic, and about a third of Americans (35%) say the lessons were sent by God. The remainder say the lessons were not sent by God (37%), they do not believe in God (13%), or there is no lesson to be learned (13%). Then, we asked half the respondents who said yes to the first question to describe, in their own words, what lessons they think humankind should learn. This prompted more than 3,700 people to write their answers, which ranged from a few words to several sentences. Complete article here: What Lessons Do Americans See for Humanity in the Pandemic?

Have we stopped counting in the US? For days now they have kept talking about 212k deaths in the US. The Workdometer has us at a few death short of 220k. Very strange...

I think the media reports are about a week behind.
When I talk with friends (who don't use the World-o-Meter) they tend to repeat numbers they've heard on TV or read... which are usually about 5K fewer (about a weeks worth) less than the world-o-meter. That's been pretty consistent (like since May) so I assume the local news media are a week behind.
(And I find it very sad that 5K Americans (maybe more) are dying each week from Covid19. Yet I have friends saying "say no to the mask". I'm just replying with "Covid19 is all fun and games until someone you know is in the hospital or dies"

Ughh.. just got the news that someone I knew at work has died. No further info - just the death announcement. ADDED: hearing it was a stroke and happened without warning. They were in their 50's - and they were one of the people I saw on the last day of working in the office back in March. They seemed happy and healthy (and a little apprehensive about how "working from home" would work and when we would all be back in the office...)
I also heard about some other deaths from Dec 2018 and Feb 19 of a previous employee and their spouse. both were in their 50's and both were world travelers (they died 2 months apart). I was looking at their obits last week for clues to what caused the deaths. The previous employee died after a "brief illness"... Is brief illness still a euphemism for cancer?
I don't remember ever having to deal with fellow employees deaths before. It might just be an age thing (I'm older now - so people my age sometimes die) or if it's a Covid19 thing.
Feeling sad for a variety of reasons.

WI is 18th, so I guess you can say 18/18.

Feeling sad for a variety of reasons. It's hard to know unless you know the circumstances. Covid can cause heart attacks and strokes. However of course people still have strokes and heart attacks without any Covid involvement whatsoever. Someone I knew died of a unexpected heart attack, at the time that wasn't something expected with Covid so it was just assumed this person was at risk. Later after reading about Covid toes, rashes, strokes and heart attacks, it was realized the deceased probably had a Covid prompted fatal heart attack. Treatments are better now thankfully, but the disease varies a lot. People I thought wouldn't survive did, and others I didn't expect to die, did. 2020. The year of Covid.

Yet they've had ~35K deaths and we're at ~220K... ETA: We're at ~230K. My bad.

Don't worry. We have turned the corner on the virus. It will also disappear when the weather gets warm.
