Spanish flu is a different pandemic. It was an H1N1 virus, so the older folks had been exposed to an H1N1 virus in the past and had some immunity, which kept them from getting real ill and helped us get to herd immunity levels. This virus is a novel virus that no one had immunity against, and we do not know how durable immunity will be. So it ends when it ends, and likely requires higher percentage of the population to have been infected and/or vaccinated.

I wish it would end sooner than later, but it feels more like sometime in 2023, than sometime in 2022.

It ends when it ends, although we are clearly doing things to prolong it. What will happen is things will get incrementally better. There will be no clear end date, and since the virus will always be with us, we will need to figure out how to deal with that fact.

I don't think it will end. This will be the flu, constantly mutating and every year they encourage us to get a booster (probably combined with the flu shot). And people will still die, and people will still get mild cases, and people will still believe they are invincible. Treatments will get better, so it won't be a big deal to a lot of people.

Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually turns endemic, like the flu. My problem is that I will be getting into that category of people that need to start worrying about the flu, even with the annual boosters, yikes

It doesn't have to mutate every year(s) - people just have to lose their immunity to it. Which I'm guessing we all will as time goes on. It will be a yearly "shot" like the flu shot - not because the virus has changed much - but because immunity has waned. I'm guessing it will get added to the list of "deadly" infectious illinesses for already sick people (and the elderly) like influenza and pneumonia. I'm guessing in a few years we will hear about Covid19 being spread amoung cruise passengers and schools or dorms - like a noro-virus which will cause people to quarantine and the news to make noise about getting a Covid19 shot/vaccine - especially for the people in the area where the outbreak happened. Most viewers will think "this doesn't effect me" and they will most likely be right as they won't be coming into contact with anyone who as the virus from the outbreak. That would appear to be the path it's on.

Covid19 reporting seems to have dropped off or rather changed in some way on the various news feeds I read. Not much talk about it in Real Life either. But I get the feeling that people are just "looking the other way". I'm guessing it's the push to see the pandemic as over (and maybe just "pandemic" exhaustion/burnout.) FWIW: The World-O-Meter still has the USA death count going up at least 2000 per day. I'm gonna predict the USA is going to hit 800,000 by 12/31/2021 on the World-O-Meter. Holy sh!t We're at 793,549 Covid19 deaths as of this morning 11/21/2021 (and it's Sunday). We're gonna hit 800K deaths before or on Thanksgiving....

At that point the vaccine was available to all adults. Since then , over 90% of deaths are in the unvaccinated

Well, it's 12/3/2021 and the World-O-Meter is saying: 807,200 dead Americans (and the day is not over so not all the numbers are in).
That's 12 days since 11/21 (my last post with a count) - so that's about 1400 deaths per day...
It's kind of scary how the 1000-ish deaths per day have been so consistent since like mid October.
I'm baffled as to why people are not getting vaccinated. What else in everyday American life kills 1000 plus people per day in America? Something you just kind of "bump into" at an indoor party or catch from a coworker or something your family member brings home with them?
Is there anything you (generic you) "get" from other people or food - like a virus or bacteria from other people/food -- that kills 1000 people per day in America? You know, something that would make people just accept that they MIGHT catch something that MIGHT kill them or their loved ones - while doing everyday normal stuff?

It boggles the mind why the un-vaxxed aren’t running to the nearest clinic to get the ‘jab’. Donnadub RN, in particular, is incredulous that some health workers in hospitals are refusing. Just a huge WTF moment for our country.

Ain't that the truth. Way to show our caring for our fellow man. The German health minister was right. This ends when everyone is vaccinated, recovered, or dead. We no longer have the strength or moral courage to do what is needed.

I have been searching for answers about why someone would opt to not get vaccinated that entailed something other meme worthy quotes.
I'm looking for something MORE than this recent example of what I was told indicated the vaccines were dangerous - Professional Soccer players were dying on the fields during play from heart attacks! - due to one of the risks of the vaccine...perfectly healthy people dying from excercise! Doesn't matter that soccer has a long and honored tradition of players dying on the field...and that amazingly players of other high intensity sports around the world aren't dropping dead from heart attacks in record numbers. ::sigh::
I managed to wheedle a friend I respect and who generally is more rational than emotional into giving some clues why they are not vaccinated.
A.) Basically, they don't see the need. They strongly suspect they've had Covid19 and they are fine. They also don't seem to think that other people should worry about getting it. It's not a big deal, they will be fine. Everyone they know who may have had covid19 is fine. They don't know anyone who died unexpectedly from covid19 (the people they know who have died - were already very ill and were going to die so their deaths might very well have been from pneumonia and not from covid19 and does it really matter? Any respiratory illness would have caused the death.) I'm paraphrasing some of this. my friend is not heartless.
B.) They did mention safety concerns about the vaccine - but this was more along the lines of - if you don't need a medication/vaccine why take it just to take it (and risk the side effects)? And they don't think the vaccine is necessary so the risks ARE significant to deciding to take the vaccine. (Why taking on risk without any perceived benefit?).
The conversation got a little heated when I mentioned people dying of covid19 - and they immediately went to the "the numbers are artificially inflated! If you die of heart attack - it's a covid death!..." basic meme/twitter/facebook stuff... you get the idea.
I redirected this with "OK, we will know better how many people died when excessed deaths are calculated for 2020 and 2021 (and possibly 2022) Life Insurance companies are very interested in these numbers as are lots of other companies (marketing pharmaceutical, various services, etc) so I'm guessing they won't be faked. Making money needs to have good "numbers" for planning HOW to make lots of money. (friend is a little capitalistic). When I mentioned excess deaths I got a brow furrow - so I'm thinking my friend has not heard that before.
C.) So, I'm extrapolating that my friend doesn't believe many people are dying of covid19.
D.) I tried to go the route of "helping your community" as being a reason to get vaccinated (and to mask) and I got scoffed at. I'm guessing because they have the firm belief that covid 19 isn't a big deal... why "pretend" to protect other people from a non-existent boogie man by masking and social distancing and whatnot - if nothing else it's inconvenient and does nothing?
I think I got an answer - there's no great need to get vaccinated or wear a mask (or any of the other stuff) because covid19 isn't that dangerous or that big a deal.
The next time we talk - I'm NOT gonna ask why they think covid19 isn't a big deal (remember that descent into meme world about "rigged" death numbers?) I think I'm gonna ask what would make them think Covid19 was serious and deadly or dangerous? Even if they have to play make believe - because it's so absurd that covid19 is dangerous. That would be interesting to know.

My favorite chart is Figure 18 where you can literally see covid sweep across the nation. Couldn't figure out how to post it here.

If people do not believe medical personnel, maybe they will believe actuaries. They deal with money, Conservatives usually like to follow the money.

Lots of life insurance payouts in 2020, and no one would have guessed the amounts still being paid in 3Q 2021. Tiny - you're welcome. Population numbers would be even higher than those of life insurance. Like Pulmonary said, insurers have no motive to increase death count.

I'm guessing my friend made the mistake of assuming there was only ONE way to count the dead (and it could be manipulated) and that there was only ONE source of information about the dead. If they are curious, I'm sure they are fully capable of figuring out what the heck I meant by "excess death" numbers... and it might turn out to be a rabbit hole for them.... It implies we are lying about this. If we do it about COVID, why believe us when we say someone died of cancer?, due to heart disease?, a stroke? or any of the other myriad causes of death. Why come to the hospital to have us treat your heart attack if you do not trust what we are saying about COVID? I even had my mother spout this nonsense. If you wonder why we are all tired and in a foul mood, this is one of the contributing factors.

Isn't the whole conspiracy about the "cure for cancer" based on the claim that you make MORE money by treating it than curing it? Therefore medicine is designed to keep you constantly sick and in your care? You can't keep caring for me if I am dead. So if anything is a conspiracy theory designed to net Big Medicine more money it would be the Pizer pill and monoclonal antibodies.

How does that work when, like us, you are in a Country with universal healthcare?
there is definitely no money to be made from loads and loads of people in hospital with Covid
Its just yet another ruse by people who don't want to face their responsibilities and get jabbed. ie....They think its all exaggerated and not as bad as everyone says.
Sick of hearing it tbh

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/?fbclid=IwAR2uBN4t68ssk2c9o7bwC5lcPwXn7zy39HVGBS4kBCa_0Qv0S4ebeOo-4vwThis mornings totals 51,290,000 confirmed cases 823,000 deaths. Numbers, rounded downward. With that many confirmed cases in the country, I have to wonder when our government will start talking about the actual herd immunity there is in the country. I would "guess" half of the people who have had the virus have also now had the vaccination for a rough estimate on my part. Why will our government not do any analysis of these potential 25,00,000 citzens who are unvaccinated but survived the virus? Do unvaccinated people who have had the virus also transmit the delta virus at the same rate as vaccinated people do. We now know people who are double vaxxed and even have the booster can spread the virus, and I am assuming they are spreading the deadly delta virus since that is the primary one in the country, at least for another week or so. Instead of attacking the unvaccinated publicy, let the government do some analysis of all the groups. If 25,000,000 or more citizens are naturally immunized add them to the vaccinated number if they do not present a potential issue.

Herd immunity will begin when trump supporters decide to get vaccinated because it's better to be alive than dead. Not a very bright group of supporters.

If 25,000,000 or more citizens are naturally immunized add them to the vaccinated number if they do not present a potential issue. Wrong yet again. Herd immunity is when viruses cannot be propagated in any significant fashion due to there being to few susceptible individuals being present. Do you see any signs of that happening? Hospitalizations and deaths continue to increase. That is not herd immunity. It will eventually happen. It will happen more quickly and at a lower cost in deaths and illness of people get vaccinated. If they do not, we will see over another 100k deaths. And you still want to give the unvaccinated a break? All the resources devoted to caring for the unnecessary victims(at this point) of the pandemic takes away from everyone else. In addition, we are spending a ridiculous amount of money caring for them. Money that should not need to be spent. So no, it is not time to give the unvaccinated a break. When deaths from Covid approach that of the flu(about 50k), then we can talk about herd immunity

I wonder why the government does not do any surveying of the people who have had covid. What does their bloodwork actually tell them? This is not a conspiracy theory here. It seems strange the government does not follow up on this issue. Who knows? Maybe the previously sick covid survivor's blood has some answers for us.

You think those studies aren’t investigating this? Studies like this take time. In the meantime, people are getting sick and dying. And we have an excellent intervention to prevent that, today. You deal with the problem at hand, and change when new information becomes available. If it turns out your suspicions about prior infection is wrong, we will have more people die. The way out is vaccination, pure and simple. It will end this faster and save more lives. But the party of life does not care about that. They would rather own the libs and rail against the elites

Period. Now I wonder just how you spend so many hours here when you claim to be fighting the good fight in the medical field. Must be skimming the web while at work instead of paying attention to your profession. I am starting to wonder who you really are.
