Nancy I was reading about this earlier today. State parks IMO are supposed to be there to preserve land. Golf courses do not preserve land for future generations. They can however become money makers for counties and states that own them. And the proposed was on unique and sensitive ground. I saw the comment about the special dunes and the scrub jay and it seemed so anti state park to me.
I saw TN and a few other states did have golf courses in state parks. Not my thing, but at least in TN's case its on land that's closer to what golf courses are often placed on. One appeared to have a seal of approval for being green or something.

Florida has 1,366 golf courses, 665 of which are public. Tennessee has 281. Tennessee also has some very rugged mountainous areas that cannot support a free-standing golf course, and a population that is centered differently. It makes sense to put a golf course in a TN state park, since that is the place that attracts visitors to a rural location.
I can understand why there would be some courses in TN state parks. We don't need them here. Jonathan Dickinson and the other eight parks are not in rural areas and would not attract tourists just for that reason. They cost money to maintain and irrigate. The roads cannot handle the traffic. Building them would kill wildlife and native plants.
The governor is just doing political damage control to save face so he can run for another elected office in 2028. And so that he can keep some measure of Republican support when he does. And so his golf cronies will still like him and still bring their friends and tournaments here. His contention that the left-wing activists are agitating over this is just bonkers. He won't admit he's wrong, bully that he is, so he lashes out at the most convenient target he can think of.

I totally agree with you Nancy. Because of the nature of Florida, the swamps, the propensity for sinkholes it would be wise mot to do something that increases the risks for no real benefit IMO. If DeSantis really wants more golf courses, just wait for some of the private ones to fail and pick it up with state monies if it makes sense. Then bargain for a redesign if you really think that gives you a selling point, but this really feels like he got this idea from others and is clueless as to what state he lives in.
