...:::"It isn't a date unless both people know it.":::... I disagree with that. Poor communication on the part of one or both parties (and possibly some general obliviousness, again on the part of one or both parties) could indeed leave one person thinking "this is a date" and the other thinking "dinner with friend". And if there is poor communication or obliviousness it is not a date. Sorry.

I'm like 8 pages late, but here goes anyways to those still reading: 1. I would never "use" a guy for a free meal. I'm perfectly capable of buying my own damn meal if I want it. 2. The person who asks for the date should pay (at least for date #1). Usually, IME, the guy has asked me out for dinner/coffee/whatever, and I've let him pay. If we go get drinks or something afterwards, I would insist on paying for that. 3. After that, who pays should alternate. If a guy NEVER let me pay, it would actually creep me out that his ideas on equality might not be the same as mine... 4. I appreciate doors being opened for me, but I don't *expect* it. I open doors for people, too, it's just common courtesy, it's not a man/woman thing. 5. No man should order my meal for me. 6. I wear high heels if I want to. I wear flats if I want to. I don't do it to get a free meal, nor to make myself more sexy. I want a guy who appreciates my personality and brain, not my amazing soccer legs.
