DH has decided he wants baby J circumcised. Is it normal for this to be done by an OB? Seems odd that someone who specializes in women's reproductive health would be the one to do the procedure. Shouldn't it be done by a urologist or pediatrician? I need to get more info from my OB at my next appointment so we can see what our options are. And some friends are saying they got the plasti-bell, but I thought those were no longer used due to complications?

I would get it done by a mohel - no being strapped down on the board, the baby isn't away from you, you can nurse before and immediately after.

I agree! They will do it (for a price) without regard to your religious beliefs. They are definitely the most experienced! My DH's best friend has his two boys done by an MD who is also a mohel. Hunt around - they are out there (mohels, but not necessarily someone who is both an MD and a mohel).
Did you know that all the future kings of England are circumcised by a mohel, not a doctor?

Both of my boys had it done by the pediatrician making the rounds that day at the hospital.

Don't know who did it and don't care. Glad it's done.

Is there any guy who said "oh thank you sooo much for circumcising me!"!!! Yes, but you left an important part out. "... when I was too young to remember it." 4 brothers and 2 husbands (no, not at the same time) were all thankful. DH's dad had to have it done as a grown man and still talks about the horrors of what he had to go through. He very much wished he had been as a baby. And as a woman I'm very thankful. I prefer circumcised as I've stated many pages ago in this thread. A good friend (and co-worker at the time) had to be circumcised around the age of 30 for medical reasons. During our morning workgroup meeting our manager announced to our mixed gender workgroup 'Bob' would be out of work for two weeks because he was being circumcised. (Insert facepalm here.) To help him along with his recuperation and kill time, I bought him some porno mags to peruse.

I don't know any women who'd sleep with a guy that wasnt. I'm sure they're out there but I don't know any.

my husband wasn't born here, so maybe. I just thought the idea that no woman would sleep with a uncircumcised man was a little silly. But then I guess if you've never seen one, you might not know what you don't know? ... Like the fact that you probably can't even tell if you see it in the uh, heat of the moment...

If you do go that route, make sure you get one with a good reputation and someone who knows what they are doing. Although, it can be very expensive

Our friends with little guys have had them at the same hospital where we are planning to have Jaydon. So we've asked a couple of them about it and we have more questions for the OB and our pediatrician when we see them next. I wish our ped could come out to our hospital, but they don't. Although the peds at our hospital are the same ones I saw when I was a kid, so at least I know them. Kind of weird to have your former pediatrician come to check out your baby to clear them to go home. She had to have started when she was 12 because she seemed younger than my mom!!

It might be cheaper in MD, though bc there is a large pool to choose from. But that's just a guess

You know you're old when your doctor looks like Doogie Howser. When DF was in the hospital the last time his do for came in with his interns/residents. They looked like they should be getting ready for prom that night. I felt REALLY OLD.

I am happy I remembered to actually ask about this at my appointment When I asked my OB if she did the circumcisions she looked at me like I had three heads and said NO way! LOL I thought it was odd that some OBs did it anway. It will be the pediatrician on-call, which is the practice I went to when I was a little kid and the docs that did the proceedure for my brothers. Still trying to tell DH he needs to go with him when it's done, but I doubt he will since he can't even handle shots. Poor guy, I have to hold his hand when I get an IV because HE gets scared

In the room when? He will be in there with me when he's born, but I have a feeling baby J will go to the nursery by himself for the circumcision and shots. I tried to get DH to go with Aly for her shots but he couldn't handle it.

I doubt they will let him in. I know the procedure and I doubt anyone can handle it that's not trained. I'd certainly never watch

DS was back in my room less than 15 minutes after he was taken out for the circ. And they must have unfastened the leather restraints quickly because he didn't have any marks. Wasn't even crying.
For the record my OB did it. Not all medical doctors are incompetent or evil.

Honestly the stories about the mohels giving those babies hepatitis has turned me off of that idea. And DH would never go for it.

If you want your son circumsised for health/hygiene reasons (nothing to do with going through religious practices or ceremonies) - your GP or pediatrician can do it - and in a more sterile environment.
