They base it on the number of nerves that are contained in the foreskin.

My son was born in 2006 and he was circumcised in the hospital two days after he was born (right before we left to take him home). They didn't give him anesthesia (risk of complications was greater than the benefit for a procedure that takes seconds to perform), but they did give him baby Tylenol. They were gone less than 5 minutes (the nurse and doctor took him to a different room to do it) and he wasn't crying or even red-faced/teary-eyed when he returned. I knew I wanted him circumcised and, luckily, my husband completely agreed with me so it was a non-issue for us.
On a personal note, I'm glad my husband has a "crewneck" versus a "turtleneck."

I'm arriving late (very) to the conversation, but I have to say that from past experience, I prefer my MEN to be circumcised.
It's a decision parents must make, and I don't knock parents either way. I was young when I had my son, and I didn't think twice about having him circumcised. If you choose not to have your baby boy circumcised, please make sure you educate him, as I believe an uncircumcised penis requires a bit more *care*.

(I hope this isn't too offensive to anyone here, but you asked, so here goes): When I go down on an uncut guy, he climaxes in 5-8 mins. When I do the same for a circumsized man, it takes him 15-20, and usually longer for my jaw to subsequently recover. Not very 'scientific', but on average, this has been my experience. Let me know if you need me to design and carry out a proper, case-control study. (Again.. my apologies for the TMI. But it's a thread about dicks, so what do you expect?)

I'm genuinely curious where people are finding the 50/50 rates on circumcision. From the CDC's website, a survey by NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) published in 2007 reports the overall circumcision rate in the U.S. is 79%. Of that, 88% were non-Hispanic white males, 73% of black males, 42% of Mexican-American males and 50% for other ethnicities.
I understand numbers change over the years, but a drop from 80/20 to 50/50 in just 3-4 years seems a little unlikely.
I don't have a son, but if we did, my female, non-penis-possessing opinion would be to have it done. However, ultimately, I would leave the decision up to DH.

Actually you sever the nerves and destroy them.
Not a huge deal if you have it done as an infant and don't know what you are missing.
I don't consider circumcision gential mutalation because it really does not do harm to a boy not to have his foreskin compared to what they do to girls in Africa. THAT is gential mutalation.
I do think it is purely cosmetic though unless you are doing it for religious purposes.
I think the foreskin is an evolutionary leftover from when we all walked around nekkid, it doesn't matter if it is there or not anymore.
I'd have left the decision up to DH since he has one and I really don't care one way or the other.

After watching a circumcision be performed during nursing school, I can honestly say I will never do that to any future sons I may have. It looks like torture!
All this discussion about sensitivity and how it looks during sex is silly. As a previous poster said, it all looks the same when it is erect. Besides, what it looks like isn't what I'm concerned about during sex- I'm more concerned with how it performs! I mean, lets be honest, all of 'em look kinda gross, cut or not!

WOW< I wonder what I have been missing all my life, and you know. I wonder how they can rate the difference. Well back to that study I talked about Easy enough - find someone who had the operation as an adult - and ask them. (Usually a dr or a med student.)

www.4skin.comYou can always stretch it back if you're circumcised and want it back. I've heard of some pretty nasty dirty d*** stories from women I know who have been with UC men. The avoidance of a form of cancer and AIDs is a pretty good reason for getting the Circ. I've also heard that C is at about 70%, not 50/50.

[/size] My "not very scientific" response is that since you, as you said, prefer uncircumcised men, you tend to go to town on these men while not necessarily giving 100% to the circ'd men, which results in the up to 400% time to O difference. Perhaps this should go on the adult board...

We don't do it and I am English, I didn't have our son circ but he did have to have it done later at age 7 or so. I don't think it traumatized him, he doesn't seem to remember and doesn't ever talk about it. He had to have it done at a later age because of the inability to be able to pull the foreskin back, I can't remember what it was called but I liken it to a frenum, our daughter had to have a frenemectomy because her top lip was attached to the gum at the frenum.

It's called 'phimosis'. If it's generally too tight to get pulled back but you force it, and THEN the penis swells, and the too-tight foreskin gets STUCK up there... that's a 'paraphimosis'. VERRRRRY PAINFUL, apparently. Actually... the mere thought of this makes me want to squeeze my legs together and wince, and I don't even HAVE any of those bits. :-(

I agonized over this choice for my son a decade ago until I saw a Discovery Channel episode of grown man getting one to cut back on infections that he kept getting in that area. Then, I figured I should have him do it at an age that he wouldn't remember it vs. getting it later as an adult. I was also mildly concerned about him seeing his dad and wondering why he was different or locker room issues in school. Congrats on your new baby boy

Original studies showing an increased risk of penile cancer were based poor scientific method (comparing older to younger populations and such) thus skewing the results. When doing good research you have to control for all variables.
Research now shows that countries like Japan and Denmark, who do not circumcise, have lower rates of penile cancer than the United States. Further, genital warts is more common in circumcised men than intact, and genital warts contributes to more penile cancer. Over time, we'll probably see higher cancer rates among cut men for this reason.
Arguing in favor of circumcism to reduce cancer risk is not supported by science.
Once socialized healthcare has taken a stronghold in the US, circumcision will certainly not be a covered procedure anyway (cost). The pendulum will swing to most of the population being intact.

aren't genital warts contracted by skin to skin contact? how would a circumcised person be more susceptible to cancer than a non-circumcised person? I am not arguing -- I believe you in fact, I am just trying to figure this out in my mind. I feel horrible if I put my son at greater risk for cancer. Thanks for the info.

Believe it or not, I was in the room with my son when he was circumcised. The doctor kept himself between me & him while he was cutting, & yes, they do cut off quite a bit of skin. And yes, he got painkiller beforehand & quickly stopped crying when I held him afterwards. I've had a number of family members in the military who told me if he ever joins up, he will thank me for having him circumcised. (It's easier to keep that area clean.)

Agree with LilBit.
FYI you can get pretty "gross" as well if you don't clean yourself properly but no one suggests lopping off pieces of your privates to keep that from happening.
Just a thought.
