A prominent NAACP leader, civil rights activist and African studies professor is a Montana-born white woman who passed herself off as black for years, her parents told the Daily News.
Rachel Dolezal, 37, head of the NAACP’s Spokane chapter, even identified her adopted kid brother — an African-American youth — as her son while perpetuating the racial ruse.
“She would put her hair in long extensions and do African hairstyles, and she liked to identify with the culture,” her mother Ruthanne Dolezal told the News.

Meh.
If a man can transition to a woman why can't a white person, who identifies as black, transition?
I don't understand the controversy unless she deliberately lied to get something she wasn't qualified for (such as special scholarships, etc).
Obviously I'm missing something.

Stupid woman. As far as I know, the NAACP allows folks of all colors to belong to their organization. As a white person, this woman could still have been the head of the NAACP’s Spokane chapter.

I doubt very much that she would have been able to be a leader.

We're all "of color". We're all some shade of brown, from very light to very dark. Each of us is a human being. To me, that's all that matters. Individuals can call themselves whatever they like in my world. To me, they're just fellow humans.

I doubt very much that she would have been able to be a leader. But there is nothing in the organization's rules a white person cannot be a leader. Aiken's white NAACP leader part of trendNew NAACP seeing more gay, diverse chapter leaders WORCESTER, Mass. - The NAACP's newly revived Worcester chapter elected a 28-year-old openly gay black man as its president this month. In New Jersey, a branch of the organization outside Atlantic City chose a Honduran immigrant to lead it last year. The chapter in Aiken, S.C., named a white man as its leader earlier this year. And in Mississippi, the Jackson State University chapter recently turned to a 30-something white man. NAACP branches have been recruiting gays, immigrants and young people who grew up in a world far removed from the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education ruling that outlawed school segregation. Now, leadership positions that were once held only by blacks are being filled by members of other racial or ethnic groups. The group does not keep track of numbers, but in recent years NAACP chapters in New Jersey, Connecticut and Georgia have elected Hispanics as president. A white man, Philip Howell, was picked to lead the chapter in Aiken in January. And two years ago, NAACP members in Hamtramck, Mich., a Detroit suburb, selected a Bangladeshi American to revive their long-dormant chapter. Aiken's white NAACP leader part of trend

What I am thinking is back when she first became active this openness of accepting anyone in a leadership role might not have been as accepting as it is today..If she has been a strong and effective active leader for the NAACP while a member, I feel that is all that is important.. I am also thinking her parents by coming out as they did in outing her are not in favor of her doings , in fact are probably antaginistic toward her and possible she just might like to , as hard as it may be, or possible not hard at all, considering what their feelings have been over the years..cut thm out of her life..period. Just a thought....

If her passion was real in working toward equality for all, regardless of one's skin color, her own skin color should not have mattered. Folks in her chapter would have accepted her for her desire to help all people of all colors. Why her parents came forward at this time we may find out later. But this whole thing lays on the shoulders of this pretender. Why she felt the need to pass herself off as black, only she can answer that.

I read more about this woman, and I don't think the issue is so much that she pretended to be black, but more that she created a whole fake back story for herself, including hunting food with a bow and arrow when she was young, and a whole lifetime of racist persecution, including 6 death threats from things she supposedly did in Idaho. She also claims to have lived in Africa, which her family says is false, and has posted a picture that she claims is her black son (isn't) and one of her black father (isn't).
I had a friend in HS who was deeply in love with a black guy. She had straight blonde hair which she permed to make a kind of afro, and she used a bronzer to make her skin color less white (this was prior to tanning beds). But she was still who she was, didn't lie about her family or make up stories about her past. She was just changing her looks to what she thought was more attractive. If that was all this woman did, I don't think anyone would care.

Good point..just was thinking about the time line ..when she became active...20/25 years ago..different times ..with out looking it up..wasn't this Oklahoma...not a very friendly place if i remember my history toward folks of color....back in the day..

She had also posted "strange suggestions" for multi racial couples when they went to the theater to see "Twelve years a slave", even saying sit in the back row of the theater..........suggesting white animosity.

Just a plain old crazy white chick!!
I would agree that if she wanted to make herself look more like another ethnicity, that should not be a problem. But misrepresenting your race in documentation is odd. Representing her brother as her son moves her into the whacko pool.
At the same time you have a high school jumping through hoops to deal with complaints that a student is pictured in 'black face' when she put on dark spray tan to costume herself as Snooki (Jersey Shore) . . . so too dark a spray tan is not PC or something.
It is all so confusing!!!!!

Oh & nice job parents. Why are you talking to the media ? If my kids ever go whack-a-doodle I am putting the cone of silence over my household. Last thing I'd want to do is feed anything to the media.

how the hell can you pretend to be black?
wasn't there a movie about a kid pretending to be black to get a scholarship or a girlfriend? He had to paint his whole body with something all.the.time.

The people who claim that white people are now discriminated against must love this. If you fired someone who you thought was white, but suddenly discovered they were actually black - the shit would hit the fan!

There is a well known non-fiction book called Black Like Me (published in 1961) about a white man who underwent medical treatment to temporarily change his white skin to black. He travelled around the South as a black man for six weeks to experience what it was like to be a black man living in the South. John Howard Griffin

I have to add to my original response. The parents adopted four black children. So much for being raised by crazy white people who dislike blacks and outed their daughter out of spite.

You are thinking of C. Thomas Howell in "Soul Man". His character intentionally OD'd on "chemical tanning pills" to "become black" so he could get a "Blacks Only" scholarship to Harvard. ETA: It's actually a pretty good movie.

I saw this story. No way did she look black to me. She just looks like a white girl with a ton of spray tan. There are many people of color who can pass easily for caucasian..that is nothing new ...and many who could pass do and did...and why not especially if it gave them a better life... Lets face it...our countrys race relations just suck ...even today...so if passing will give some one a leg up where it really shouldn't be a problem but is ....my feeling..go for it...more power to them..
