I find the biploarism of YM when it comes to fashion interesting.
So $750 boots and expensive international travel on a regular basis are the only acceptable YM spending categories.
And you're a better person if you are wearing 20+ year old jumpsuits with $750 ostrich boots than someone who buys inexpensive clothing made in the last 5 years give or take.
It's unacceptable to care about your appearance but it's okay to look down on everyone else who doesn't agree with you and accuse them of being sweat shop supporting hootchie mammas.
Did I get it all?
I really don't understand announcing you don't care how you look like it somehow makes you a more moral better person. If you didn't care how you looked you wouldn't start threads telling people they can suck it you wore a suit to a wedding.

DD's wedding is next summer. Outdoors in July. Reception in a barn. I didn't realize I get to choose 1st. I think I will be wearing a short purple or red dress. something like this
But we are still in the early planning stages.

I'm curious about the workout gear. Are there good running/workout sneakers made in the US?

Some New Balance styles are made in the USA, but where they're made shouldn't be the basis of why you buy athletic shoes, especially running shoes. I'm going to buy an ill-fitting stability shoe when I wear neutral, for example.

I think I've been pretty careful about not bashing people for going out to eat on a regular basis, getting expensive hair-coloring jobs at salons, or having a couple of new SUVs in the garage even though I don't live that way. We're not clones of each other, and thank heaven for that. If someone is living within their means (i.e., not asking for income-based taxpayer handouts or stiffing their creditors through repeated BK filings) and always buys their cars new but doesn't give a hoot about traveling outside of their own county line, it's not my business.

In my opinion, '70's business casual never goes out of style.

I really need to turn in my woman card. This thread is making me realize I have about 1000th of the interest in clothing as y'all. Seriously. I'm astounded at the debates. This is me, totally. Hence, my having to ask if i could possibly get away with something other than a dress/skirt for my son's wedding. add hose and something other than a flat and you have a miserable moonbeam. i have bad feet and don't wear anything over about an inch as far as a heel goes. That just makes it that much more of a challenge because i'm sure that those would be so frumpy to most here..lol. [ I don't wear hose and rarely wear heels over 1.5". You don't need high heels to look polished. And hose are a big "no". Tights under a heavier weight skirt or dress, ok.

swamp - when you say hose are a no, is that a personal thing? Or in general? It's a may wedding, in Wisconsin. The tights with heavier dress/skirt will not be in play... Gack. I'd just skip it if I could...But my son wants to see his big brother...he'll have to miss school to do it too..

In general most people don't wear them any more. Definitely the younger crowd and I think even my mom and aunts only decide to wear them to stay warmer in dresses. Not sure it really keeps them warm, but I didn't notice anyone of any age wearing them when my bro got married last March, it was an outdoor wedding though.

I find it VERY hard to get used to wearing a skirt and nice shoes but no stockings. (Fortunately I rarely wear skirts.) My legs are in great shape but the skin tone is mostly pasty white and uneven, there are veins here and there... I really like sheer stockings in some shade of light brown to even out the skin tone. I wear slacks and dress shoes with no stockings and I'm even finding it hard to do that.
I know you can buy stuff to spray/spread on your legs to get the desired effect- may have to resort to that.

I'm translucent myself, but I just learned to embrace the pale. Plus I always found it odd looking with my legs being a darker shade.
As for shoes, if I really need something I use the little peds or whatever they are called.

Another pale person here! I learned to embrace it. If someone has a problem with it then they can look away. I don't look natural with a tan since I've never had one a day in my life (I burn then go straight back to white). What I find helps is wearing colors that suit my skin tone. I have pink undertones so when I wear red I look fantastic b/c it brings out the color in my skin.
If I wear black I look like death warmed over.
I've learned all this thru trial and error. If the color suits me my eyes look brighter, my hair looks great and my skin glows. If it doesn't I look like I am going to a casting call for the Walking Dead.

I don't see a problem with pants if that would make you more comfortable, just play up the top part with bright colors and cool jewelry. And fun flat shoes.

if I wear brown, mustard yellow, or rust colors, people ask if I feel OK.

I'm pale too and I prefer it that way. I recently got a sunburn and I just look wrong now, I'm too dark! I'm still way lighter than your average human but it's just wrong.

I wear shoe liners with flats and heels. Keeps my shoes from getting all sweaty and gross. I wear tights with skirts in the winter, and during the awkward spring weather days (it's not quite hot and not quite cold) I just stick with pants.

I just make sure they don't show and adjust as necessary. Target makes low-rise ones, so to speak. I buy those.

I had no idea anyone actually dictated a dress code for wedding guests. I mean, don't show up in clothes that are ripped, dirty, or totally inappropriate (cutoffs, wife beater shirts, swimsuits, anything see-through), but otherwise, if it's suitably dressy for the occasion (or dressed down a bit for an outdoor event), then why do people care? It's the bride and groom's day, after all. How they look (and how the wedding party looks) is all that matters, right? I guess the exception would be if it's a black tie event, but the invitation would state that. I don't know about dress code, but I think what is appropriate and what is not can extend beyond the types of dress you described. A guest at a wedding I attended wore a scarlet, squined cocktail dress. Since she was the only guest dressed for a cocktail party, maybe that particular dress wasn't appropriate for the situation. (Geez, we accountants are such sticklers when it comes to "appropriate".)

Maybe wedding invitations should include photos, to show what is and isn't acceptable. Then there would be no questions from anyone. After all, my idea of dressy casual is probably very different from someone else. Maybe everyone should just show up naked. There would be no questions then, either. A lot of something else, maybe. But no questions.

I have a wedding on the beach in June but the ceremony is at 7 with sit down dinner to follow. She used beach formal when I asked. I'm good friends with her so she asked what I was thinking when I asked dress code. After back and forth she doesn't want anything close to tiffany blue because that's what her bridesmaids are wearing or light pink because it's too close to white. Then I had one labeled green but probably closer to a turquoise but she said on her phone it looks too close to bridesmaids. I told her she was giving me slim pickings if she preferred light beachy colors! To which she replied with orange, dark yellow, or fusia. I just let the conversation change tacts after that. Lol If I am good enough friends to be invited and give a gift, the bride had better just remember that I am wearing green (as in U.S. dollars) and keep her pie hole shut. Otherwise my gift $$ will be spent on an awesome outfit to wear someplace where folks have manners. Yeah, that's maybe why I don't go to many weddings, ya think?

Yea...towards the end I was telling myself ok she's planning a wedding from states away and finishing up the last month of med school, that'll make anyone crazy. And just decided if you don't look and say white or tiffany blue I'm good.

My dress was very....formal...long sleeve, high neck but had a slit on the back, so you could see my legs and the wedding was in June. I knew I should have been wearing some kind of hose thing, but it was too hot.

if you're not restricted by budget, then you should have no problem finding nice garments that meet your standards. All it takes is a bit of googling, calling, and willingness to browse and order online. Heck, I know exactly where I could go in this area to find a good dress if price is no object. It's just not a priority to spend that much on something I might wear once every 2 years. In March I paid $750 for a pair of ostrich boots. That made more sense to me! I've probably already worn those boots more in the last 2 months than I'd wear a (theoretical) new dress in my entire life. Did you post a shot of the boots?
