Crap! I obviously have no fashion sense. I thought she looked good. Good thing I choose a boring profession . Yea, DD is already starting to tell me how to dress. I think she looked great for a work, although I'd pick a jewel colored top to go under the jacket. Color is your friend. Not like Mimi type color, but just a splash. (Looks down at black pants, cream colored top, and black and white swing jacket and slinks off to corner)

I've gone to the grocery store looking pretty rough. I keep my head down and hope to run into nobody I know. Other times, I go to the grocery store looking pretty good, I keep my head up and secretly judge everyone looking frumpy as if I'm soooo much better. The best way to insure that I run into someone I haven't seen in a long time is to go the grocery store right after some brutal workout class. I'm sweating, bright red, and gimping along like an old lady.

The three of you look happy, that is a good thing...one is way too big around the gut. Are you the woman...not bad for your age. So, the point is? I'm not sure I get it? Judging from the offensiveness of the insults you casually tossed out... no, you don't get it. Oh please, don't jump to conclusions. I'm just trying to figure out what is what. I'm not a bad guy, but I question things...sorry. What insults?

Obviously, if you don't have the time/money to wear something special, but do your best, then it's the thought that counts. I guess it's the thought that counts in the other direction too. If you're going for passable, then okay, that's the amount of thought/care you put into it. Maybe that's fine for the particular relationship that you have with the other people involved. For my own wedding, I really appreciated the people who took the time to dress up for it, even if it was just a step up from their usual attire. It showed me that they thought it was a special event. I hope my family doesn't feel like this. Me showing up is how I am showing I care about them. I don't have the personal resources at this point to do much beyond passable when it comes to appearance. This was the second of 2 family weddings 2 months apart- both my brother's kids. For Wedding 1, we not only drove 12 hours to get there (we hate the airlines and have time for road trips), we rented an SUV so we could bring DS, DDIL and our ADORABLE granddaughter with us, paying for all the hotel rooms including an overnight on the way down. My mother got to meet her newest great-granddaughter for the first time. This time it was just DH and me but we drove again, about the same length drive, and paid our own expenses. We brought gifts both times, too, of course. I know my brother. It means so much to him when family gets together and this was a rare opportunity to have all 5 siblings plus our parents at the same event. I bet he'd have to go back and look at the pictures if you asked him what I wore.
I am sure no one found her outfit as a sign of disdain. She dressed nicely and looks like she is having a good time. The guy not in a tux isn't as dressed up as she is. That could be her husband, but he doesn't look like he's in his mid-70s. Now if the other guy in the tux IS your husband, then you two don't match very well. He should have worn a business suit as well. But you certainly don't have to apologize for either one of you. You looked nice and comfortable, as if you are having a good time.
Thanks, Susana! Without wanting to give out too many personal details, the guy in the tux is my brother (much-younger, as he likes to remind me) and the other is my BIL. He's married to my sister and I believe he wore his ostrich boots with that outfit. He's a country boy at heart and a wonderful husband and father. I guess we don't put too much stock in what people wear on their backs (or their feet). BTW, I agree wholeheartedly with your observations on how bad inexpensive clothes can look on older women, and unless you make a full-time job out of maintaining your face and body, it's perilous to try and look "hot".

Rukh, I'd say most of the women were in what used to be called "party dresses". My 85-year old mother wore a suit, but pastel-colored and with a skirt. There were some floor-length dresses. I'd do it again. I don't think I created a spectacle. If I'd wanted to do that I would have gone out and bought myself a flaming red dress with a matching boa and a short skirt to show off my great legs, and added a pair of candy apple red "F-me" stiletto heels.

Yeah, that outfit you're suggesting is a little tacky. There is a midground between frump and hoochy mamma.

If you were my aunt, I wouldn't have had a problem with what you wore, but the way you dress does contribute to the festive nature (or not) of an event. You probably would have looked fabulous in something like this: This color would probably look really good on you too: Sorry for the giant pictures/lack of red boas and hooker heels.

I hope I don't offend Athena, but there is a difference between what women in the 60s and women in the 30s and even 40s look good in. One person pointed out she could look "hot." What if she doesn't want to look hot? Someone else is suggesting cheap clothes. Cheap clothes look ok (sometimes better than ok) when you are young. They are often ill-fitting as you age even when you weigh the same, etc. And the styling is often too youthful, making older women in their sixties look like they are trying "too hard." I am sure no one found her outfit as a sign of disdain. There is "hot/knockout" clothing for every age group. Not like I said she should wear a shirtdress with 5" stiletto heels....

You're asking me to not jump to conclusions - this from someone who just concluded that a stranger was too big around the gut and a woman looked "not bad for [her] age"? Those aren't just conclusions, they're insults.

How about people at the grocery store in workout clothes - LOL!? I most always hit the grocery store on my way home from the gym. Sorry, not changing to go to the stupid grocery store. Me neither, so I guess we're both heathen. It is funny, though, when someone asks me if I just came from playing tennis and I smile, shake my head and say, "oh, no. I don't play tennis. I came from boxing."
I do sometimes feel a little bad dropping into the grocery store in sailing gear since it can look a little weird - it's clearly athletic gear but has reinforcing or even padding in weird places and unfamiliar logos - and it's no fun to be soaking wet in the cold AC. But sometimes there's no choice if I'm running late, so I just squeak (wet dinghy boots sound a little like the shoes the organist wore on Sixteen Candles) along the aisles as quickly as possible...
Like I said, I can't really explain it, but for some reason I don't get when people dress inappropriately for whatever they are doing. I just came back from taking my kid to his swimming class. There was one mom there in 5 inch hills and tight dress. I think she looked great, definitely had the body for it. But it's just looks weird when you dress like that sitting in the hot HOT pool. I also have a hard time explaining to my kids why wearing PJ all day is not OK even if we are home all day, especially if it goes on for 3-4-5 days in a row. I've never seen a person not looking presentable outside of his home until I came to US, so may be that has something to do with it. And also as I mentioned, I really have no right to talk, I've looked like a very fat bag lady for years now, no matter where I am

I guess we don't put too much stock in what people wear on their backs (or their feet) Really? Because so far all I have gotten from this thread is that you own expensive, "well-tailored" suits along with $750 ostrich boots and so does your BIL. And you don't notice or put stock in what other people wear? Bullcrap.

If you want to wear all made in America, that's great, you shouldn't have to buy a dress made in Cambodia for a wedding. However, I don't think there is any need to feel like you somehow stuck it to everyone else because you didn't.

I actually think the "Deal with it" part is directed toward the YM crowd who were trying to tell her how to dress for the other wedding.

Yes, and please remind everyone what the yellow jumpsuit looks like. Not current. Perfect for an April O'Neill costume!

And they're still ugly. Just because famous people are wearing them doesn't make them attractive.

Personally (and this is just me..) I don't wear suits to weddings, I wear cocktail dresses and I'm late 50's (57) age. I'm petite and thin (5'4"; 110#) and find appropriate dresses without any issues. I prefer a store like Nordstroms for special occasions, because of the quality, the styles, and the fact I'll be able to wear it for a few years easily as we don't go to that many weddings/special occasions at this point (maybe a half dozen a year) so I spend the extra $$$, without hesitation. I also never wear a "V" neckline/top with a suit, because the lines of both the front of the jacket and the "V" shape of the front of the top, are too similiar, both come to the shape of a "V" whether the jacket is buttoned or open. The color and quality of the top does not match the quality of the suit either, to me. I would have worn an irridescent hot pink shell or bright yellow with that dark grey suit color. Instead of having your hair in the middle between long and short, I'd also pick one or the other...either shorter or longer, and styled. And though I've got some gray hair, I'm a blonde and I'll be a blonde until I die....so that means I color it. I'm not criticizing, just stating what I do.
Glad you had fun!

All very good points- I'd never have thought about the V-neck issue And I agree that a more vivid color blouse would have made it dressier. I really should have put my hair up in a clip. Things have been insane with putting our house on the market and I let it get scraggly. Time for a cut!

One post is a total put down. Another you state we're all human. That means "not perfect", right, Robert? That would include you! So why the hell would you go out of your way to be such an insensitive jerk to people you don't even know? Does insulting others make you feel better about your own "less then perfect-ness"? Or do you just feel like it's ok because you're essentially anonymous?
I don't think it's ok at all, but it's what you've done for YEARS. ever since i've posted with you, you've felt the need to belittle others, or make light of serious situations. you promised me you had turned over a new leaf, but i think you were being less than honest.

I just googled "dresses for women over 50", and I went to images. It was right toward the top--took me about 10 seconds. Looks like a blog. I'd have to do some digging to find where they sell it.

I really need to turn in my woman card. This thread is making me realize I have about 1000th of the interest in clothing as y'all. Seriously. I'm astounded at the debates.

I think very dressy slacks with a dressy top would be lovely. Glad to read that. I haven't worn a dress or skirt in at least 15 years. DS2 married in 2011. I have the best DIL I could possibly have
