killing a person for no reason, and caught on video. www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/how-a-cell-phone-video-led-to-murder-charges/ar-AAazW5KAt least the city was direct about how they feel about the incident. The tazer did not work on the fifty year old, so he bolted away from the officer. Eight shots in the back. I know the trial will be lengthy, but, I have no doubt the officer will face lengthy prison time. This shooting is so wrong.

You gotta love how he planted to taser on the victim and called in that the victim had struggled with him over the taser. If there were no video no one would have questioned it.

This officer needs to pay for what he did. I'm glad someone got it on tape.

Zion Illinois had a police involved shooting (death) of a young black male the other day, but, actual details are still "murky". Police were called for "shots fired" and a gun was near his body, but some are saying it was not his, and he, or someone else in the group, was trying to purchase it.
Another, tidbit. There were only 16 shootings in Chicago over Easter weekend, but that was pretty normal. The weather was warmer than it has been.

I would imagine that lacking a video, the forensic evidence would have indicated this was a not a lawful shooting. All the bullets entered the man's body through his back side. Forensics would sink the officer's case.

All the bullets entered the man's body through his back. Forensics would sink the officer's case. And not from close range. ETA: And the distance would have nullified the 'he took my taser' story as I believe he was way too far away to use it. (although I don't know the range on those things) I would imagine the officer would claim 'he resisted arrest, he screamed at me, he lunged at me, there was a scuffle, the man assaulted me, grabbed away my taser and attempted to flee." It would still be a very difficult sell, but he might have been able to cloudy it up enough to slide by, if it wasn't for the video. I like the mayor's response. We all make decisions and we have to live with the consequences of those decisions, whether you're a criminal or a cop.

I believe it was a broken tail light stop. even LESS criminal. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought I read that after the stop for the broken tail light, the officer discovered there was a warrant out for the guy for not paying child support. And then it escalated. Imay be wrong thought on the child support issue.

Can you imagine the self-serving spin if the video hadn't surfaced? This is a pattern which continues to repeat itself...but everybody can catch everything on camera/video now. Time for the cops to get some sensitivity training and not assume that all blacks are thugs whose lives don't matter. Those days should have been over a long time ago. And BTW, this is not a problem of the "South", it is nation wide. We should have more stringent tests for who gets to become a cop. Many of them, apart from the stupid donut eater joker, are thugs with a badge...and yes, many are decent.

In fact he had already been in jail before, for the same issue. If it's like GA, they can jail you and hold you until you cough up at least some of the money.

I think this footage is different. It's taken in the day, at a distance that provides good understanding of participants, is relatively unobstructed, and it's a long, apparently continuous clip. The disparities between the (former) officer's version of events and the footage are apparently huge, although I have yet to see them systematically enumerated.
It's not the usual, grainy, close-up, nighttime footage that invokes so much fear and doubt. It was taken on a beautiful day and it appears to show a very calm execution and attempted cover-up.

It looked like the cop was just too lazy to chase the guy so he just calmly shot him- then planted the taser next to him. He moved pretty quick to do that.
Maybe he had another agenda- wanted to be famous and rack up some donations and didn't count on the camera. Far fetched maybe but it would be no problem for a sociopath to murder someone for financial gain. Wilson raked in half a million. I can't come up with any reason to do something like that so it's all on the table for me.

I hope that the folks who think that body cameras will kibosh events like this realize the limitations of body cameras.
Body cameras may be helpful in discerning discrepancies between what a cop is saying on the radio and the timeline of events on the ground if the audio is good and the available recordings are synced up and analyzed competently. Body cameras may also <ahem> instill a certain sense of accountability in cops depending on how often they are on, whether tape is actually scrutinized, and how quickly cops learn to block them, run the batteries down, position their bodies so that cameras doesn't catch much, conduct questionable activities under lighting conditions that will result in low-quality footage, or jam the audio portion of the tape. There's also a real possibility that concerns over privacy or confidentiality will delay the analysis and public release of usable body-camera footage.
This cop was charged with murder because the cell phone footage captured things that we should not expect body cams to show.

I think a body cam would have shown that situation easily.
There was another shooting- where the body cam showed where the officer was 100% justified in shooting a man running away from him- also a white/black situation. It is not the be all end all of evidence but it is a fantastic record to have.
This video caught it all- and the instant where the man turned towards the officer with a gun- and how shitty the officer felt after it. People on both sides of this should watch this. So I support 100% body cameras.

I think the body cameras will be good simply for a psychological reason - the cops know they are there, and who wouldn't modify their behavior if they knew someone else (and their boss) might see it? I know I would certainly be less likely to use the F word when driving if I knew it was being recorded. Even though I am always justified in using the F word when driving I think this will benefit cops, as well - I've seen countless times when a driver tried to claim a cop behaved badly during a traffic stop only to have their claims soundly refuted by the dashboard camera footage. If I was a cop I'd want a record of each interaction, so I could better defend myself from false accusations.

Did this officer ever shoot anyone before? He seems so casual about it. For the life of me I can't see what on earth motivated him to shoot. This doesn't seem like the incident someone would use up their "get out of jail free pass" if you kwim. It makes me think he has done something like this before and got away with it.

This doesn't seem like the incident someone would use up their "get out of jail free pass" if you kwim. It makes me think he has done something like this before and got away with it. Apparently he had been accused of excessive force before. I agree he looked very calm and deliberate after the shooting. Either he is very cool under pressure or he had maybe planned in advance what he might do if he ever got involved in this kind of thing, to make it look like a justifiable shooting. Initially, before the guy with the video came forward, this cop got a lawyer and the lawyer made a statement that the cop had followed proper procedures and was acting in self defense when he shot this guy, so apparently, at least at first, what the cop did and said was enough to at least initially convince the police department that he was justified. I find it interesting that his own lawyer dumped him after the video came out. I always figured lawyers were ethically bound to present the best defense even when they knew their clients are guilty, but I guess not. Or maybe the lawyer was worried about getting paid, once the cop got fired. I assume the police union doesn't help with legal fees for bad cops?

Perhaps the lawyer determined that he would not be able to meet that ethical standard if he continued to represent the guy so stepped down.

No I am not- I am referring to officer we are discussing- thought it was clear what I was saying. And not to rehash the Wilson story- but that story is far from clear unlike this one.

Several reasons, but the biggest is privacy. - I have yet to see what the laws are regarding what the videos are used for, if they are stored, how they are stored, how long they are stored, who's allowed access, etc.
- Police respond to a lot of medical calls. Will they video those as well? - The police respond to a call in my house, let's say I'm having a dispute with a neighbor, someone stole my favorite lawn ornament, or some other innocuous type call. Are they going to be videoing the entire time they are in my house? - Officer privacy... do they get to turn it off in the bathroom? - I feel that we will get to a point (maybe not now but later down the line) that if there is no video of a crime then we won't get convictions based on other evidence. - I'm really just not all that keen on the proliferation of cameras being integrated into our daily lives. Things I hadn't thought of but will. Thanks.
