When I compliment someone, why are they compelled to tell me what they paid for it?
For example - Me: "That's a cute scarf." Coworker: "Thanks, it was $3.00."
Me: "I like your shirt." Friend: "Thanks, I got it at Goodwill for $3.50. I would never pay full price."
Also, why do people ask me what I paid for something? Isn't that sort of a personal question?

I think people answer that way just out of reflex. Oh, i got this at Cosco for a great deal, etc.

Well, half the time if someone says something like, "I like your scarf", it's followed by "where did you get it?" because (I'm assuming), they might want to get one as well. So, I just throw all the details out there to clear things up as quickly as possible.

I also have people approach me (my boss for one) and say: "I got this blazer on sale for $30.00 at Macy's."
I don't care! What I really want to say is "well, it's too small" or "it's out of style."

I'm always getting compliments on it. So I mention that my SIL bought it, so I don't get the "where did you get that question".

I guess what I find is that people are "bragging" they buy their clothes at Goodwill.
I don't care. It's not my thing. Most of the stuff I see at second hand stores are outdated, stained, stretched, and everything else. The nearest Goodwill is two hours away so I don't get there often.
I prefer to spend my money on new clothes.

I tell people what I paid for something if it was a great deal or if asked where I got it. Other than that, I just say thanks when complimented on something I'm wearing.

I am bragging about how cheaply I got something. I'm trying to stop doing that. But I get so thrilled about getting a good deal I like to brag about it. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png)

And if I like something and might want to get it myself I do ask how much it cost to see if I can afford it. I know, I have no class whatsoever ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png)

I find myself doing this every once in awhile - not Goodwill, because I don't find it as magical as other people do - all I ever see there is out of style crap. But, I think I tell someone what kind of deal I got so I don't come across as a douche. I have some expensive things, and have stupidly said some dumb stuff that sort of rub people's noses in my fortunate financial situation. I think if I tell them that I shop at Target, or got it on sale it will make me less douchy. Either that, or I am so uncomfortable if someone gives me a compliment that I don't know how to say "Thanks!" and change the subject. I feel like I should follow up with some other piece of information. "Cute shoes." And I reply "Thanks - they hurt like hell, but I can't resist them."

I assume it's a "girl thing", since my male friends don't seem to feel the need to brag about a super deal on clothing. :-)

Maybe it is just far nicer than the rest of their shitty wardrobe, and bluester isn't really loving the outfit, just loving it in comparison.
Or, maybe bluester is sucking up to the boss / co-workers by complimenting them on stuff that might be cute, if it was 1998.

But I get complimented all the time on stuff I bought at second-hand stores, and if it's women, I often add in what a super-awesome deal it was. I feel like the awesomeness of the deal adds to the cuteness of the outfit! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) I love a "no way!" response. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/cool.png)

I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like they are just walking up to you telling you that they got the scarf for $3.50 at goodwill. Stop being so sensitive.

When you know how much many people pay for clothes, you feel like you're so much smarter than all the clothes snobs!

Then say "that's great" and go back to your life. You can't control other people only your reaction to them. Why waste time getting pissed off/annoyed at a quip about their clothing price tag? Or you can snarl at them that you think they are braggarts and don't care about their POS out of date Goodwill clothing. That should stop people from talking to you. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

A couple of weeks ago I wore a black jacket to work that I bought new this fall. My boss said "I remember when that fabric was in style!" It was brand new. WTH? She is the one that wears colored, tapered leg, mom jeans. FWIW: I am in no way a fashionista. I prefer classic pieces.

On a related note, I love how everyone (without fail) says they got a great deal on their new car.
No one gets a great deal on a new car. If the dealership gave you a discount, it's because they already had plenty of "f&%k you" built into their original asking price.

It's especially annoying when the person shouldn't even be spending on a new car. Nothing is a 'good deal' when you can't afford it. I had this happen just last week. I'm practicing the advice from this thread: "that's nice" and go about my life.

I also have people approach me (my boss for one) and say: "I got this blazer on sale for $30.00 at Macy's." I don't care! What I really want to say is "well, it's too small" or "it's out of style."

And what about when people ask what you paid for something?
I usually don't answer that question.
