I can't imagine cycling through clothes within 3 years. Wow. Granted I was pregnant for a year and a half out of the last 5 years, so that was a "new wardrobe" for part of that time. I look at my wardrobe and while it may not be super stylish, I don't think I stick out as out of date. Maybe I do and I just don't know it. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) That's my guess. Not many clothes look current at 5 years old. I wish I had picture to post and you could tell me how out of date I look. Because I don't think I do. ETA: In the winter, I wear solid colored sweaters and neutral colored pants (that are neither "skinny cut" nor wide leg with a mid rise). In the summer, my shirts have a little more pattern, but nothing that screams 2009 or 2014 (wait, I haven't bought any new shirts in 2014 for work). Weekends are t-shirts and jeans. I guess i don't know what the difference between a 2014 outfit and 2009 outfit would even be.

I just don't have the money or inclination to replace my wardrobe every year. But it is noticeable. There was a time I couldn't see it, then I purposely worked on updating my look and reading fashion magazines and paying more attention to how successful women in my community dress. Now I can see it and it drives me nuts. And it's one of those things that will make people I interact with through my job more comfortable so it behooves me to do it. I'm not talented enough to do whatever the heck I want and have folks accept it just because I'm that good.

I do think there is a way to pull off a classic look. Case in point, I've been watching a Sex and the City marathon today and Charlotte rarely looks out-dated. Her hair, make-up and clothing style is all very fresh. If I didn't just pull up the information for the episode, I wouldn't know that it was 15 years old.

I just saw stirrup pants at Target. That is a trend that needs to stay dead. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/yikes.png)

Do you still wear stirrup pants and body suits? Are you asking me? I was 9 when the '80s ended. Example - I don't wear skinny jeans. I don't wear high waisted pants. I'm over 30, so I don't wear anything that is too low of a rise in the pants - no one needs to see my ass hanging out (any more, I did in college). I try to be aware of where shirts are hitting, but I often don't go shopping for a year at a time. Most of my shirts hit mid hip - whether that is in or out of style, it is going to look good on me.

I'm an ardent believer in the three Rs....Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I buy a lot of my clothes at thrift stores, and have gotten some amazing stuff. A brand new, buttersoft leather hobo bag, for example. The strap was too long so I took it to the shoemaker. He told me that bag was worth $850 at Ogilvie's. I paid $5.99. A stunning sequinned cocktail dress from Joseph Ribkoff, one of our premiere designers. Everyone compliments me on my clothes, and it's become something of a game. "Don't tell me you got THAT at the Salvation Army!!! It's gorgeous! "You're lucky you're tiny....I can never find anything there in my size!"
Booyah!

I think I'll stay unfashionable in my lovingly knitted sweater that my mom knit for me back in high school some 20-something, OH GOD I'M OLD, years ago. I still can't believe I haven't destroyed the thing yet. I also have my dad's ancient cable knit ski sweater from a billionty years ago that I still wear and I need to find some yarn to match so I can get a hole fixed. Right after I find someone who knows how to knit 'cause that sure as shit isn't me. I'm fat so going to thrift stores doesn't really work out to well for me. We do have a place called $10 & Under which sells past season stuff from what looks Kohls, Target and JCPenney. I've found a couple of decent things but the women's sizes are basically 2 or 3 racks in the far corner. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/angry.png) I'm fat, not dead.

We don't have any particularly good thrift stores in my city, but I've found a great second-hand place (consignment-type store?) that's a step up and has better quality/style stuff. The prices at the nicer places aren't that much different from the thrift stores, honestly.

I agree with Bluester on this subject. I don't really care where you got it or how much it cost, I am complimenting a person because I think it looks nice. I also HATE HATE getting asked how much I paid for something, I think that is personal.

I just realized I am old enough that I am experiencing a fashion cycle (20 years). That explains why I am seeing things in the adult section that I remember wearing as a kid.
From the blog I posted if you're not one to subscribe to fads you're probably fine with an article of clothing from 2009.

Every time I see something like that, I have to remind myself that if I was old enough to wear the trend the first time around, I'm too old to wear it the second time around. I saw a teenager wearing cutoff shorts, a flannel shirt and combat style boots in line at subway the other day and started reminiscing about the 90's. I thought she looked great, but no- I won't be wearing that or baby doll dresses, over t-shirts with combat boots either.

I agree. If I can recall what grade I was in when that fad first made it's appearance it's probably not one I should adopt as an adult.

I don't wear leggings either because I feel like I am too old for that (hint: I graduated high school in the 80s). But, on the other hand, I have seen ladies older than me in leggings and they looked super cute.

I think a lot of people get "style" and "fashion" confused which of course is what marketers want because then you rush out to buy whatever they stick on the racks.
Fashion, at least how the blog I read defines it and I agree is stuff that will be in one day and out the next. Look at the junior's section if you are interested in "fashion". It's all stuff designed to be worn for a short period of time and discarded.
Style is you dress to yourself while keeping in mind the current trends/cycle of clothing. Learning the difference between the two has REALLY improved my clothes shopping skills. I no longer spend a ton of money on crap I am unhappy with. I feel a lot more confident and get much more bang for my buck nowadays.
I can't say that I like or purchase a lot of the current fads on the market right now. But you can't look at me and put a label on my outfit either. I definitely belong in the current decade. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

Speaking of fashion vs trends.... has anyone ever seen a woman who actually looks GOOD in a peplum top? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif)

I am bragging about how cheaply I got something. I'm trying to stop doing that. But I get so thrilled about getting a good deal I like to brag about it. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png) If your boss knows you have frugal ways, they have no incentive to give you a good merit increase because they know you'll figure out how to live on whatever they give you. Studies have shown that the employee who complains about not having enough money and how expensive everything is gets bigger raises than their peers, who do better work, but seem to live comfortably on their pay check. Short change the frugal and reward the spendthrift. So why make it known that you are frugal?

I quit worrying about wearing the current styles when I got too fat to fit in them. Now I just look for things that look decent on my body--fashion trends be damned.

No, man. Just.... no. It's like..... wings for your hips. A roof over your saddlebags. Even if a woman is in great shape, a peplum top basically says "Here, let's take the slimmest, cutest, most feminine part of your body... and put two halves of a lampshade on either side." I'm just not buying it. There is not a single outfit on that page where adding the peplum makes it look better than if it were just straight up and down and fitted. No dice.

When I compliment someone, why are they compelled to tell me what they paid for it? For example - Me: "That's a cute scarf." Coworker: "Thanks, it was $3.00." Me: "I like your shirt." Friend: "Thanks, I got it at Goodwill for $3.50. I would never pay full price." Also, why do people ask me what I paid for something? Isn't that sort of a personal question?Umm no. It's not like they are asking who you voted for. Not that I would care if they knew that either.

Uh no bitch I bought that because I wanted it, not because I thought you would want it ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/angry.png)

She didn't outright ask if she could have things, though. She'd just comment on how lovely whatever it was I had that she liked and give me big, puppy dog eyes. She did the same thing to my mother. We knew whatever it was would be hers when she left for home. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

That reminds me . . . A couple of weeks ago I wore a black jacket to work that I bought new this fall. My boss said "I remember when that fabric was in style!" It was brand new. WTH? She is the one that wears colored, tapered leg, mom jeans.
Those are back in. ![](https://img0.etsystatic.com/038/2/9257047/il_340x270.624135386_jf0y.jpg) ![](http://pixel.brit.co/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/5-Blue.jpg)
