I answer the question. I don't really care. If they're asking me so they can judge how much I spent/where I bought it they can knock themselves out, doesn't affect me none. If they're asking because they want to know where I got it then I hope my answer helped. Life's too short to read into this stuff and get pissed off by it.

I also have people approach me (my boss for one) and say: "I got this blazer on sale for $30.00 at Macy's."
I don't care! What I really want to say is "well, it's too small" or "it's out of style."Do it! People really appreciate honesty. Especially your boss. They love to hear honest feedback. Mine is always saying how she wants us to be open and honest as a team.... ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/charmed.png)

It needs to be said...there are no such thing as "classic pieces"! There is always some twist to the cut or colour that dates clothing. Always! The only things that gets away with being an older style are designer clothing that costs at least 5 figures and then it gets called "vintage". Anyone that thinks their clothing from over 10 years ago is "classic" is deluded.

I can't stand it when someone says 'I like your 'x', where did you get it?' you answer them and they ask how much it was and when you tell them they say something like 'wow, must be nice to be able to afford expensive things'. I get this a lot with shoes. I wear a 10 and not all 10's fit so I have to be picky about what I buy. I also can't wait until clearance because the 10's go first. so I tend to shop online at zappos for brands that I know fit. so if I spend $80 on a pair of flats it's not because I want to but because there are no other shoes that I like, in a brand that fits me.

I mean things like long sleeve tees, cardigans, blue jeans. But yes, even the long sleeve tees are longer in length these days. And blue jeans rise changes. I tend to get sick of things after 3, 4, or 5 years.

I can't wait for things to go on sale either. My size would be gone. I live two hours away from the nearest mall, if I see something I really like, I buy it. I used to work/live close to a mall, then I watched items like a hawk waiting for them to be marked down. One of my coworkers had on a sweater she supposedly got at Goodwill. Weirdest thing, when I was at the mall I saw that exact same sweater in one of the stores. She sure lucked out on that one!

I figure most times a compliment is just an ice breaker for a conversation. If the piece has an interesting story I share it. As an example, the piece of jewelry that I get the most compliments on is a set I picked up in Tijuana 35 years ago for $5. It truly is a cheap piece of jewelry with ground colored turquoise set in a silver plated copper setting. Over the years DH has given me some expensive pieces but I never get compliments on those! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

You know that's how Goodwill gets clothing, right? People buy clothing and then for various reasons donate it. I've bought many an item at a second-hand shop that still has original tags on it. My friend lived in Vegas for a while before the crash, and you should have seen the kinds of fantastic new items she'd find donated at Goodwill with tags still on them.

You have not Rocky. All your clothes are stained T-shirts from the 80's and acid wash tapered jeans. Admit it! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)
Lots of new/nearly new clothing make it to the second hand stores for various reasons.
Salvation Army here has an agreement to take excess inventory from Target so they are getting brand new items that they turn around and sell for cheap.
I'm a weirdo that enjoys hunting thru second hand stores for bargains. Yep I've seen tops I got at Goodwill for $1.99 at another store going for $30. I'm pleased when I know I saved $28.

I could see where that might be annoying to some. It does not bother me at all and I will give whatever details about an item people want to know without being offended. I love learning things about people and finding commonalities so volunteering information I didn't ask is great. Regardless, I've come up with a list of other ways to respond since a simple "thanks" seems a little stand-offish: thanks, blue is my favorite color! thanks, I got it on a trip to Mexico! thanks, my husband picked it out! thanks, fall is my favorite season because I love scarves! thanks, it was my reward to myself for the awesome job I did on (whatever project)! (nice way to toot your own horn at work) To avoid being socially awkward, I have lots of conversation openers that don't involve asking about the weather as well, not that there is anything wrong with talking about weather. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

I live in a small town, very rural area. There are two stop lights in the whole county. One of the churches has a store that sells used items. When my mother passed away, we brought her clothing to a donation center in a larger town. We did not want to see people walking around this small town wearing Mom's clothes. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/melancholy.png) I donate my own used clothes to stores out of town for the same reason. Knick knacks and kitchen items, I don't care about.

When my mom passed away I knew I couldn't handle a garage sale where people would nickel and dime me over my mother's possessions. Therefore I was really pleased that I was able to give away almost all of her clothes, furniture, jewelry and other possessions to family and some of her friends.
And it does give me great pleasure to see them wearing those things. It makes me feel like she's still a part of them. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

What I've noticed is that people frequently make Bluester's remark when they don't like the scarf or whatever.
I read somewhere that we compliment women way too much on the way that look as if that is their most important attribute. Sure, if you make it a habit to comment on what the guys in your group wear, then do it. But if not, why single out the women?
It has been hard, but I've made a conscious effort not to do this with my girl students.

The men I am usually around wear cammo or something with a fish/deer/gun/Labrador/Bass Pro/Cabela's logo on it. There isn't anything to compliment. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)
I will compliment if I see a guy in a sharp suit though.

I complimented my (male) boss's shirt yesterday because it was purple and never wears "girly" colors. So I complimented him and then gave him shit about wearing purple. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

This thread just reminds me of my social awkwardness -- I don't really notice what people wear. I do notice an overall appearance, like if they are "disheveled" or "neat".
I'm just not that detail oriented, so I don't usually notice one part or accessory of an outfit. I had to force myself to be detail oriented the times I had to conduct uniform inspections -- it was really hard for me!

Granted I was pregnant for a year and a half out of the last 5 years, so that was a "new wardrobe" for part of that time. I look at my wardrobe and while it may not be super stylish, I don't think I stick out as out of date. Maybe I do and I just don't know it. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

Oooh, I respond automatically the way bluester explained in the OP. Now I'm questioning myself and wondering "why"? I do bargain shop at lot, but I don't think I'm purposely bragging. I never thought it was an annoyance to some people. I try to be sensitive to that type of thing. I'm going to have to think about this.

In self defense class they told me always see what people wear so you can tell police. Now I practice it.

Maybe I do and I just don't know it. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) I don't attempt to keep up with every single fad. Not all of them work for my body/lifestyle and if I did that I'd be replacing my clothes every few months as the next new thing took hold.
I do keep track of trends though. High waisted pants are back but if you held up a pair from 2014 and a pair from 1985 you'd notice they are dramatically different in terms of fabric, cut and sillouhette.
You can't pull a 20 year old pair of jeans out of your closet and announce you're in style.
So if you're not doing that you're probably good. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) What Not to Wear had an episode where they did a really good job of explaining the difference. It was a chick that wore all vintage clothes. They taught her how to blend the pieces so she didn't look like she was stuck in a time warp.

If my husband and I are assaulted together, we'll be covered -- he's the visual detail guy, I got the rest covered!

I'm starting to see the benefits of my men pausing. I can't remember shit so when somebody says they like something or asks the cost or where I got it I can honestly tell them I don't remember. And if you don't like people telling you how cheap a deal they got was (and want to make friends) reply: It looks it or You can tell! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)
