I can understand there's a lot of patients but efficiency would be something like letting PT know there's a biopsy scheduled so they don't just show up for nothing. Not like it was an emergency procedure. When I was in the hospital the last 4 times, there was a white board in my room that had my tests scheduled, PT and OT scheduled visits. But did you have to log out when you used the restroom?

Update! He's showered and walked more. Wearing his sleep shorts because he can use the bathroom. They still want him to have help getting to and fro. The nurses say he can go on his own. PT differs and says the nurses just don't want to be bothered. No more mooning everyone!!
This is freaking awesome.

Well, I left at 4 pm. His bio and her fiancé were there and they were making him tired with their constant talking so it was just too many people and too much noise.

DF has to be the one to do that. She isn't coming next weekend. Hope we are out of here soon. They overdosed him with insulin and then his sugar was too low so they gave him OJ which kept him awake all night. Then they tried to give him stool softeners again. OMG. If this place doesn't kill him, it'll be a miracle

He had a bad night. I realize it isn't an exact science but his sugar level is all over the place because of the meds he is on. So they gave him too much insulin, then something to fix that, then it was too low so they gave him OJ which ramped it way up again plus made his potassium level too high so he had to get something for that and on and on. He's dozing and has zero energy today I'm not happy. His diabetes doctor better come in today. The holiday weekend is over. It seems shit starts the minute there's no one but him in the room. I swear he won't die from a bad heart but the aftercare.

I swear he won't die from a bad heart but the aftercare. My mother went through the same thing in the hospital. All those professionals and they never could get it right, even though they were in control of 100% of what she ingested. Zib, you're his advocate. If his diabetes doc isn't showing up, call. Keep track of what's happening (I'd like to assume all these issues are going into his chart correctly, but I won't hedge a bet there). The sugar surges and dips can't be good for him, since his body is already under stress from the surgery. And ramp up your complaints, if you think you need to. Definitely make some noise. Go to a nursing/doctor supervisor, and upwards, if need be. You're not there to make the staff's life easier. It's their job to make sure he is healing and stable, especially after all that surgery. No transplant team wants to go through all that, only to lose a patient to something controllable.

Grrr. But on the plus side, OT has released him. He is showering on his own and shaving. PT is here and while they work with him, I'm tracking down the diabetetes doctor.

The PA of the diabetes doctor came in. I, of course, took a potty break and missed her so amazingly DF didn't ask for the real doctor. So I will email him. I've had it up the ying yang with incompetent nurses and aides today. My tolerance for stupidity is not high to begin with but it's being stretched today. Very thinly.

It scares the hell out of me that he had a great surgeon and it could be all undone by idiots! He's doing great but not out of the woods.

He's snoring away. Sigh. New heart didnt fix that. I'm guarding the door so unless its medically necessary, do not disturb. You can't heal if you can't get any sleep.

Zib, I've just caught up with the most recent highs and lows! I know he's not out of the woods yet but it's still great news!
I don't know much about insulin-dependent diabetes. But one of the posters here who is diabetic has been on a VERY strict diet for the past several months, and she uses much less insulin than she used to because of her recent weight loss.
I'm guessing your DH has lost a lot of weight too since all this started. It seems obvious, but maybe it's worth pointing this out to his docs? Dunno ...
Take heart Zib! Hugs to you.

He became insulin dependent because of the meds he was taking to keep him alive while awaiting new heart. Now his sugar is all over the place because of the new meds but doctor says once he's stabilized this should end. Whew! In two hours he can go from 68-too low, to 243-too high. Yikes!

The physical trauma from the surgery (ANY kind of illness or surgery) often sets off blood sugar problems, frequently wild swings. His endocrinologist (diabetes Dr,) should make chart notes to do HALF what is generally suggested for a swing. AND if he is real sensitive to OJ (late DH was), as it appears, a different food item, like 1/2 turkey sandwich, s/b used.

Zib, I'm sending prayers your way that his blood sugar stabilizes.
My Dad had type 2 diabetes in his old age. It's nothing to mess around with!

If his latest biopsy, scheduled for tomorrow, comes back no rejection, they will release him.
