Great job, Zib! The way nurses pester people for blood tests, etc. when you're in the hospital (24 hours a day), it's amazing any healing takes place.

No one should be hospitalized without an advocate to be there for them. Someone has to be the gatekeeper, like Zib is doing, to stick up for a patient when a patient cannot do so. <<Takes Zib's ability as a warning not to mess with her...ever>>

I actually stood outside the door and turned away two people with paperwork that wanted to bother him
Good for you! I understand paperwork needs to be done but it drives me insane that hospitals keep telling you to "get your rest" but then let a million random people tromp thru your room at all hours of the day.
When I gave birth to Gwen the social security office assistant showed up in my room at 1 am wanting me to fill out paperwork.
He stood there and argued with DH when DH tried to politely kick him out. I woke up due to the noise the guy was making and the guy made a beeline to me refusing to leave till I answered his questions.
We should have called security on him. DH said it happens again with Abigail he's going to take the person by the back of the neck and throw them out of the room.

He isn't going anywhere. Criminy, come back when he's awake.

He isn't going anywhere. Criminy, come back when he's awake. They should have something like "office hours" for all the admin stuff and the patient is to set those hours. E.g. any non-medical staff can only enter betwee 10am and 11am or after appointment Just because a patient is a captive audience for his/her medical needs doesn't mean admin has the same rights. Id****!

I can understand there's a lot of patients but efficiency would be something like letting PT know there's a biopsy scheduled so they don't just show up for nothing. Not like it was an emergency procedure.

Nope, he just let her. They're taking his chest tubes out now. It makes me cringe because its painful for him.

Wow - at least that's even more progress if the tubes are coming out.
As for the nurse who wanted to test his sugar & Temp while he was on the throne, I hope he ripped her a nice smelly one.
He should have asked her to use a rectal thermometer.

No one should be hospitalized without an advocate to be there for them. Someone has to be the gatekeeper, like Zib is doing, to stick up for a patient when a patient cannot do so. This is so very true. When late MIL was in the hospital, I was her advocate. Her sons just weren't assertive enough. I hope I'm never in the hospital with DH as an advocate - he is too intimidated by the hospital staff to ask questions and speak on my behalf.

DF usually has no issue but sometimes, when you least expect it, he does. Example, before biopsy yesterday they gave him lasix, which makes you have to urinate, a lot, and often. I was out of the room for maybe 5 minutes. When I get back he's upset about it. When I asked WHY he didn't ask them to check with dr first, no answer. Argh. A few days ago I asked them to check before giving him stool softeners. Yes, it's SOP but DF has no issues with that. If they'd read chart, they'd know that. Giving him those would have had a horrible effect on him. You don't have to be rude. I wasnt but I asked them to check with doctor first. He didnt get them.

Zib when I had to go in for Lung Surgery last Summer 2013, the crap that they tried to put me through was unfreakingbelievable. I ended up telling them to not bother me with meds of any type. They freaking messed everything up with my own meds. The clincher was I was only in the hospital for 4 days.

GG, that's easy -- if you go into the hospital, get your DH to post about it here, and Zib, Nancy, and SL will be on a plane before you get that first needle stick. Zib, I'm so glad to hear that your DF made it through surgery successfully and is recovering well. I hope they are able to turn him loose soon - hospitals are exhausting!

Not like it was an emergency procedure. When I was in the hospital the last 4 times, there was a white board in my room that had my tests scheduled, PT and OT scheduled visits.

I'd have to be my own damned advocate, even if it killed me. We have no kids. Or maybe I'll hire someone. Hmmmm...now I'm wondering. Is there such a job as professional advocate? Someone who does just this kind of thing for people who have no family, or no family they want around at such times? Kind of like a fee-only financial planner, who works for the client, doing what's best for them, not what's best for the hospital, the insurance company, etc. I guess the person could be an attorney, but does it need to be?

Update! He's showered and walked more. Wearing his sleep shorts because he can use the bathroom. They still want him to have help getting to and fro. The nurses say he can go on his own. PT differs and says the nurses just don't want to be bothered. No more mooning everyone!!
