Which is the whole point I was trying to make with the OJ example in the first place. In our society being accused of a crime can fuck up your life almost as much as being convicted of a crime. This mom is going to have felony child mistreatment charges on her record for life. I agree with Swamp that a conviction seems pretty unlikely, but she's already pretty fucked just due to the arrest and charges.
Well that's not where I was going, but okay. Yes, I agree that charges can haunt you, even if there is no conviction. But if this woman gets a competent public defender, she may be able to make it all go away . . . especially with all the public notoriety. At least, if she's smart she will.

They hate him because they believe he committed the crime regardless of whether he was convicted or not. They perhaps hate him more because they feel like he committed the crime AND got away with it.

::In our system it does. You're either guilty or not guilty. It's a black and white thing. You aren't supposed to be judged for crimes you didn't commit, and a jury of his peers said OJ was not guilty of committing that crime.::
Our legal system is not the same thing as our societal system.
You are guilty of a crime or you are not, totally agree. Our legal system doesn't determine if you did an act or not, only the weight of evidence so as to convict you or a specific crime.
Society sometimes judges you by crimes you did or didn't commit, but more often it judges you based on whether or not you took specific actions society deems unsavory. I rarely look at unsavory people and think "I dislike them because they committed the crime of (let's say manslaughter)". I might look at them and say "I dislike them because they ran some guy over with their car and drove off" or "they killed someone without justification". I don't much care which part of the penal code it falls under.
If you knew the person you hired as your babysitter had babysat other kids, tied them up, committed sexual acts against them, but was found "not guilty" in court...would you let that person babysit for you? Lets say you were on the jury, you heard the accounts, they admitted to doing the actions but were foudn not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Do you care about whether the court convicted them? Or do you care about the actions they took?

A nine year old has no business having a cell phone. A parent should have been watching them.
