I was surprised at how good I look in orange. I took a risk because I liked the cut of the blazer.
I also apparently own a blazer in Deep Lichen and didn't realize it.
I'm racking up the fashionista points today.
Course DH would say I own so many blazers/jackets it's damn near impossible for me to NOT own something on trend. I have a real weakness for blazers/jackets.

The fact that Athena chose to see that fairly innocuous suggestion and read it instead as people suggesting she get plastic surgery and become a vapid slave to fashion is on her, and no one else. I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole- this thread is sprinkled with it, mine and others'. I was making the point that there's a spectrum of what you do to "look your best". At every point there are trade-offs- economic, relationships, time spent enriching your brain, etc. I don't want to be at the frump end. Nor do I want to start spending more time and money on shopping and clothes than I already do. And those of you who have accused me of not buying a new item of clothing since the turn of the century may have missed my description of the jacket I had made for DS' wedding. In the last 3 years, I've spent about $2K on dress shoes alone. (That's 6 pairs. You do the math.) Well, OK, maybe you were engaging in hyperbole, too. This morning one of my co-workers passed me in the hall- she's late 40s/early 50s, with gorgeously-styled strawberry blond hair that always looks wonderful. Dyed, I'm sure. She was wearing a print dress that hugged every curve. She looks wonderful and I've been considering asking her where she shops. I don't think I'd want to take that route, though. More time shopping, maybe the same amount I'm spending at my tailor but on a larger quantity of clothes, made God-knows-where, to replace in a couple of years. It's just not my thing.

What's the harm in asking?
Um, I don't think there is anyway of saying this nicely, but you do look frumpy in your LBD.

Maybe others are able to see something I'm not? LOL. It is quite small! What I said about the look, I stand by - it's inoffensive, but definitely not exciting. I do like the color of the sash a lot. But I think Athena should shoot for fabulous - and it sounds like she will with the rental. But it couldn't hurt to have a dress in the closet that's fabulous too. You never know when some last minute theater or other event tickets might come your way.

Maybe we're using two different frumpy definitions?
Maybe frumpy isn't the right word. The dress is very plain and not especially flattering. She kind of looks like she's swimming in it.
She had a rocking body, she should wear something a bit more fitted. Not skin tight and slutty, though.
ETA: The color of the sash is beautiful.

And you're right about the "swimming in it" look- I'm slowly getting things taken in as I get more confident that I'll stay at this weight. My slim skirt, which needed to be slimmer, is at the tailor right now.

Why not? Everybody loves to think they look great enough that people want their advice.
I'm a shoe whore, I get asked all the time where I found certain pairs of shoes. The answer will surprise you, most of them came from Goodwill!
I doubt most people who ask me will run out to buy second hand shoes, but I have had some friends say they're reconsidering the idea when they see my finds.
I don't think Athena looks frumpy in the picture
In the picture considering the venue, no. Putting it into context of the shindig she'll be attending here soon, yes.
If I ever had to attend a wedding like in the OP I'd rent since it's extremely rare I need to be that formal.
But I do own one good cocktail dress that I look fabulous in and works for the type of events I attend. That was the score of a lifetime, found it for $6 at Goodwill.

I need to shop at your goodwill. I buy some stuff for the kids there once in a while, but the adult stuff is scary.

Wait. .. uh. . there is no such thing as Goodwill in flyover country. Forget what I said, no need to come here.

I think your coworker will be happy that you ask where she shops. It's a very high compliment! I am an accessories gal and when someone asks about a particular necklace, I gladly tell them where I got it. I want my favorite boutiques to stay in business!

However since we are in these ridiculous fashion cycles, my High School clothing is actually back in style. Wish I had kept any of it, but truly the 80s were a bad time for fashion and NONE of it should have come back!!! My daughter and I went shopping this past weekend and saw a lady who apparently hadn't let go of the 80's and had not accepted that she was no longer suited to those styles. DD2 overheard her going on and on to the sale gal about how she still has all her clothes from back then and was so happy those styles were back. Based on her appearance, she was either my age (mid-40's) and had done some serious partying and sunbathing that caused her skin to give her the look of someone pushing 60 or she was in her mid-50's or older. Note: I've seen several women over 60 that looked much younger than she did. She was wearing faded jeans tucked into cowboy booties, a black shirt and a denim vest (think early 90's Shania Twain video). Oh, and feathered hair. Now don't get me wrong - I love 80's fashion and am tickled its coming back around BUT I also have enough self respect to know I am to old to be able to pull off most of what's out there and just have to content myself with how much it annoys my daughters to have it back in style.

I have idea here - since you already utilize a tailor to alter clothing, why not just have some items custom made? You can go shopping, find styles you like and take photos when you try them on. Then work with your tailor to find patterns/material and go from there. And then you have Made in USA plus some pretty unique items. It something I wish I could afford to do (my sewing talents don't extend beyond hemming and mending) but is to cost prohibitive. ETA: I don't think your LBD is all that frumpy but it does seem a little on the casual side. I've visualizing it as something I'd wear with a nice pair of boots for work or dinner out rather than to a formal event.

Then work with your tailor to find patterns/material and go from there. And then you have Made in USA plus some pretty unique items. Where do you think the skirt that's being altered came from? Over the past 6 years, he's made me 2 suits, the skirt, 3 blouses, 3 pairs of pants and 4 jackets. The last jacket cost $1,500. And that's why when he makes me something, it's an item that's not going to be out of style soon. What we've been discussing (mostly) in this thread is the dressier, trendier, non-business part of my wardrobe. I'm just not prepared to spend at that level for things I won't wear that often or for that long, although I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige! When I think about it, though, he's mostly focused on business wear. He's not going to have a lot of jewel colors or silk prints. I'd probably have to find someone more focused on women's clothing.

I have a theory of you can tell when a woman graduated high school by looking at her hair. Does she have 80s bangs? The Farrah Fawcett do? Some version of a beehive/helmet hair?

well shoot, lost my whole post.................but rest assured no 80's hair here although my "era" was more Knots Landing's Abbie Cunningham and Top Gun's Charlie than 80's bangs.

I was a lazy student so I never did the late 80s/early 90s hair. I just let the bangs I did have grow out and let it be.

In the last 3 years, I've spent about $2K on dress shoes alone. (That's 6 pairs. You do the math.)
I've been gradually going in this direction. Several years ago, I was loaned a pair of boots by TD's mom and I was ready to steal them, they were so freaking comfortable. I went on a search for them and found them.....at $525! I couldn't pay that for them, but several months later they showed up at sierratradingpost.com for $80. One size, MY size, so I snagged them. I bought a pair of black suede booties from the same for about half off and like the boots, they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I just can't bring myself to pay full retail for them!
So the idea of paying nearly $500 for shoes is not out of the realm of possibility anymore. As I don't have the need to dress up, I wouldn't be buying 6 pair but a couple pair would not be remiss.

I made this suggestion several pages back.
Athena....just because your tailor does mostly business wear, don't assume that s/he doesn't do other stuff. My aunt was an incredible tailor, could work with fur and leather. She could remake a suit to fit like a glove. When I was in college, I used to buy stuff I liked a size large and she would fit it to me. I never had pants fit like that since, but she's long gone.
Anyway, she made my mom's wedding dress and that dress was a piece of art. My 5'2" mom had 2 daughters that were at least 7" taller, with 3" longer arms and not near the boobs, so the dress was never going to be worn again. The detail on the dress is incredible.
This same woman made all my doll clothing when I was a child. I was the first girl born after a long string of boys (8 of 'em) and even my Kewpie doll had a wardrobe identical to mine (some of which had smocking that rivaled that worn by royalty.....I pity the work my mom had to put into washing and ironing it).

But she's not the only one (I'm looking at you thyme4change ETA: and @justaposter. You did it too, didn't you? ). Asking a question like that is going to give you a wide variety of looks (which I would hope is the point) and if you can't view them with an open mind then why bother even asking?!? I only remember asking twice - once was what shoes should I wear to my niece's graduation, and I specifically said that I would have to walk at least 2 miles, and it was during the day and would be over 100 degrees, so I wanted something casual - not high heels, and everyone put up silver strappy 5 inch heels - so, yes, I poo-poo'd the suggestions, but only because they were completely inappropriate. The other time was when I was going to the gala, and I took a lot of the advice. Granted, I didn't buy a dress from any of the links posted, because I really wanted to try on the dress first, but the whole thread gave me the confidence to buy a full-fledged cocktail dress. Which, I ended up wearing and being way, way, way overdressed. But I did take everyone's advice.

Athena, not sure if you have an Amex Blue Cash (or if the offers are available for all Amex-es) but I just noticed under the "Offers Available" tab at the bottom of my account homescreen there is a $50 off $100 coupon for Rent the Runway. ETA - Ah, nevermind, it expires in November. Might roll back around by March, though! And I really need to be invited to a black-tie event so I can wear this: Edited again to fix link.

The link didn't work but doing a search on the word "stage" on the site did. Pretty, but it's black. I'm definitely doing something other than black. I just don't know what it is yet! I have a Hilton Amex so I'll check for offers before I order.
