Although those dresses are pretty, I don't know if they're Athena's style. She did say she's over 60. Maybe she would rather have something that covers her arms? Oh yeah...and that "no child labor" thingy too. I searched for 60+ years on that site, those are from that result. I think because they don't have plunging cleavage? I guess it depends what you want to show off. Without being stalker-ish - that ebay suit she linked was a size 6 so I'm imagining her fairly fit so maybe she'd like to show off her arms? Dunno. I think she said she didn't.

Not stalker-ish at all- I posted it so you could look at it. The last pair of jeans I bought were size 8 and the jacket was "6/8", so I would have had to do some measurements. Overall, I'm in good shape but my upper arms aren't worth showing off, so I'd go for some sort of sleeve rather than sleeveless or strapless.

I second mich's suggestion of finding a local tailor to custom-make something. If you can spend upwards of 1k for an outfit, you can afford a tailor. Actually, the tailor will probably be less than an off-the-rack (high end) designer.

The reason she has a cool mil is because she doesn't spend her money frivolously! buying something so you're dressed appropriately for a social event is not what I would consider spending money frivilously. And that's why you don't have a cool mil in the bank

Sigh.....
We're going to a wedding next year, and seeing what the mother of the groom bought for her dress, I'm going to be on the hunt for a dress to wear to a wedding too. This is a destination wedding, but sounds like that despite it being on an island, it's going to wind up rather formal.
I'll probably be looking at the rental sites in another 6 months or so.

Why not invest in an evening suit? Something like this would be lovely;

Why not invest in an evening suit? Something like this would be lovely; I've seen some nice evening suits in my browsing and may end up renting one- the more I think of it, renting really appeals to me. I don't wear special occasion dresses that often, I like the idea of picking out a new on each time, and I don't end up with a closet full of things I wear once every 3 years. It may not be the perfect YM solution since it will cost more over the long run but it works for this situation.

I had a thing last January and I found at least 100 dresses that were on the clearance rack.

I'm trying but I just can't get there. I don't see how something you wear to get respect at work is going to look appropriate for a society wedding. "Cut a little curvier" than a man's suit isn't enough. The suits women wear to these things are not work suits. They are suits especially designed for special events. They are made of richer, more festive materials and cut a lot curvier than men's suits. If it were me, I'd spring for a new dress/outfit to wear. I bought a new dress for my sister's wedding, one for my 20th reunion, and a nice outfit for my aunt & uncle's 50th. Out of those three outfits, I have only had occasion to wear the skirt I purchased for the anniversary function. The top and the other two dresses are still in my closet and will most likely never be worn again since I no longer fit into the two dresses and the top is out of style. When I think of someone wearing a suit to a dressy event, I think of something you'd have seen on Emily Gilmore. I think a suit is fine as an idea, but I would definately steer clear of anything that resembled work wear. The only other idea I can come up with if you're set on that option, is to maybe buy a really dressy top and wear that with the skirt of the suit, some strappy or at least dressy heels, and leave the jacket at home.

The top and the other two dresses are still in my closet and will most likely never be worn again since I no longer fit into the two dresses and the top is out of style. I just can't operate like that. For my 40th HS reunion I wore something I already owned and I was happy with the way I looked. (No, it WASN'T a business suit!) I absolutely did not want to wear something that screamed,"I went though 5 stores, tried on 20 dresses and spent $300 so I could impress everybody". If exterior appearances were that important, the ugly lime-green Ford Fiesta the rental car lady gave me in revenge for not upgrading to a convertible would have defeated that objective. Instead, I pointed it out to my classmates and made fun of it. I bought the LBD in 1983. Yes, I know when because it was when I attained full status in my professional society and it was a Big Thing. I wore it to the evening reception. The style is classic and I recently lost enough weight to fit into it quite nicely.

The dress is 30 freakin' years old!!!! I'm sorry, but no matter how classic the cut, it's going to look dated.

There is no kind way to say this, but she is right here. I'm sure your figure looks fantastic - get yourself something that shows it off. And remember, I'm not a shopper at all, wear workout wear 95% of the time, etc, so I'm not one to spend for fashion. But in the case you're describing, neither the LBD or the suit is going to be right. And you know it, which is why you're posting here. So you'll think about it that night and it will impact how you feel.

1983? I bet it has shoulder pads. Hey, how did you know? You been peeking in my closet? Well, I like that dress and I'll wear it again. As I said before, though, I plan to rent something spectacular for the wedding. In my warped financial priority world, paying $300 to buy something I'll wear only once every 3 years is bad. Paying $300 (and that's how high it can get for the expensive designer models) for the experience of wearing something extraordinary for a special occasion is OK. I've spent enough time on renttherunway.com that I'm getting banner ads taunting me with my favorites.

I don't think renting a once in a lifetime dress for $300 is a skewed financial priority.

Athena, Please, please, PLEASE post a picture of your LBD. . . it just doesn't seem right for me to tell you to BURN IT before I see it. (only half joking - I really would love to see this 30 year old dress that you think is still ok to wear).

I find it hard to believe that an elegant black dress couldn't be more useful than that. I would think updating your wardrobe with a couple more modern, but still classic, dresses would come in handy for a lot of things. And since you said you recently lost some weight, it would be fun to go pick a couple of go-to dresses that you could pull out of the closet and know you will look great and be occassion-appropriate. ETA: I don't find any fault with renting an awesome dress for this event. I just think it's a mistake to not have any dressy-event-appropriate modern attire in your closet.

Wow I just checked out that renttherunway.com & now I wish I had someplace to go because I really want to rent some of those dresses. I wonder how many sizes up you have to go for them to fit properly.

Holy cow that dress is as old as I am! Sorry but nothing 30 years old is "classic". The sillouttes and shape of clothing changes immensenly in 3 decades. Your dress will scream 1980's when you stand next to someone wearing a current LBD or any current dress really. Between this dress and your "classic" one piece yellow pansuit I think you do a wardrobe evaluation and "waste" money on some new clothes.

OK, there it is in my avatar- no blue eye shadow, no big hair. The scarf at the waist is relatively new, BTW. I think I look pretty nice.

Maybe it looks like one of those black dresses from the Robert Palmer video. Those are "classic" aren't they?
