I have actually seen women wear a suit to a wedding although not a formal evening one. The suits were also in bright colors like yellow or cobolt blue not navy or black. It seemed fine for the afternoon reception but i wouldn't wear it to a more formal one. I have also seen women wear a more casual suit or dress to the church to see the wedding who were not going to the reception. I actually wore a dress that I had worn to work to a fancy evening wedding and recpetion. It was a very nice dress but definitely something a business person would wear to a power lunch in type of thing. Everytime I got even a few feet away from my family someone I didn't know would walk up and ask me a question thinking I was an employee for the facility who happened to be walking through the reception. It really did get annoying after about the eighth time. By the end of the night I was really ready to go home. After that I always just bought a nice new dress if I didn't have one that I knew was appropriate and looked good on me.

You're right that I can afford it- but I can afford a lot of stuff I don't want to buy. A flashy dress made by slave labor in a country where basic human rights such as freedom of religion, aren't respected, isn't one of them. Are the only two options really the work suit you know you shouldn't wear or some shoddily contructed, slave made, flashy hooker dress? What is wrong with the flashy, hooker look?

You think that blue dress looks like a hooker dress?

What is wrong with the flashy, hooker look? It doesn't look good on a 60-year old woman! Now that's the best argument I've seen yet against wearing a business suit to the reception!

Ah, well, then go to a store like cache and get something age appropriate as well as wedding appropriate.

If the 'imported' label is a total deal breaker for you, that makes my suggestion useless. If it's price, style and sleeve length you want go to Belk.com and look at the cocktail dress selection. Over 700 different designs from jacketed suits to sequinned mini's. All different prices. A cursory look at a few does show that they are imported but not the country of origin.

Are the only two options really the work suit you know you shouldn't wear or some shoddily contructed, slave made, flashy hooker dress? No- that's why I'm looking at St. John Knits. There's a store within walking distance of my office but it would kill me to pay retail! I'm guessing $500-$1,000 depending on whether I buy a simple dress or a suit. I'd rather have an iPad. I'd get more use out of it. Don't you have at least a $1,000,000 in the bank? Buy a freakin' dress. You might have another wedding to go to.

The reason she has a cool mil is because she doesn't spend her money frivolously!

She does, apparently... I agreed with whoever said they'd buy a new outfit because they don't get the opportunity to dress up all that often. Then again, I don't have a cool mil in the bank.

Oh yeah, forgot. Well, could she find brands besides St John? Is that the only one that is ok? What other brands are clean enough?

Not to speak for Athena, but I don't think it is the $300 on a new dress that is the problem. I get tired of spending money on things I feel are dictated by others even when I have the money to pay for them. So while I LOVE a nice party dress, it would annoy me to have to spend the money on something I didnt love, just because others thought I should. I know I'm preverse. Now someone here has to have a fancy party for all of us to get to dressed up and have fun at in our new pretty dresses.

I haven't read all of the comments but my thought is wait for the after holiday sales and see if something is suitable. The wedding isn't until March so there is time to look.

Although those dresses are pretty, I don't know if they're Athena's style. She did say she's over 60. Maybe she would rather have something that covers her arms? Oh yeah...and that "no child labor" thingy too.

I second, third, and fourth the Rent the Runway idea. They have some absolutely gorgeous dresses for all ages, shapes, and sizes. One of the best features is that you can see photos of other women in the dresses to get an idea of how it looks on different body types and styled differently. I had a few selected in case I was able to snag tickets to an inaugural ball last year, and that was one of the main selling points for a few of them.

I like the Rent the Runway suggestion! I already found a bright, splashy print that I'd never buy because everyone would remember it from the last time you wore it. I'll wait till closer to the time but I'm going to have a lot of fun shopping for a rental.

I looked at some of those American-made clothing links - YIKES! It must be nice to be able to afford to buy US-made clothing, cuz I sure as hell can't!

If you object to buying something imported, find a seamstress/tailor and get them to make you something. There is a lot of time between now and March.

And yes, it is! Oct 15, 2013 10:51:48 GMT -5 The Walk of the Penguin Mich said: If you object to buying something imported, find a seamstress/tailor and get them to make you something. There is a lot of time between now and March. That's what I did for DS' wedding (see, at least I had the good taste not to use a business suit as a Mother of the groom dress)- I got a beautiful Chanel-type jacket, but longer, made in a subtle wool and silk plaid. I don't think it's dressy enough for an evening wedding, though.

Oh yeah...and that "no child labor" thingy too. I searched for 60+ years on that site, those are from that result. I think because they don't have plunging cleavage? I guess it depends what you want to show off. Without being stalker-ish - that ebay suit she linked was a size 6 so I'm imagining her fairly fit so maybe she'd like to show off her arms? Dunno.
