Tonight I'm making burgers & fries. 1 lb hamburger @ $1.99 lb the buns hubby brought home from work this morning, so they are made fresh today and FREE! I have the lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, & pickles already. I even have some blue cheese on hand, so mine will be a blue cheese burger. I have a bag of potatoes 5 lbs @ $2.99, I'll use probably 3 or 4 potatoes for the fries. cheap, easy & better than fast food. Although, I would KILL for a Whataburger from Texas. ok again with the prices....what kind of ground beef do you get for $1.99 a lb? I don't think I've seen under $3.99 a pouond and since I won't touch raw meat, I buy premade hamburger patties (I also buy grass fed ones but I order those online - they are more than $3.99 a lb). 80% is on sale for $1.99 here a lot. We buy beef by the 1/2 steer from area farmers and pay around $2.50-3.00 pound for everything. ground beef, patties, roasts, and steaks.

When we come back from vacation, DD1 and I are going in for a side of beef. other options at the place we're going to are a mix of chicken, beef, and pork. I watched 2 full episodes od Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on youtube.com yesterday. He was in a school and it's unbelievable when goes into chicken nuggets. Gross. And kids chose those after he showed them what went into them. Great viewing. atch it and you'll never want your kids to eat school lunches again.

Actually rice is one of the things that I will admit to still trying to master... That and pie crust. I leave that to DH. I'll have to look up the vodka recipe and see what that is like. I can't do the pillsbury or other pie crusts, something about them makes me feel ill Easiest pie crust I've made is one Pepperdoo posted forever ago. You're only supposed to use it as a bottom crust since it's too "tender" to transfer, but one of these days I might try. Even if I don't, I tend to like a crumble topping (like in dutch apple pie) more than a crust topping. You don't have to roll it or anything. I made all my pie crusts this way for Thanksgiving (I made 7 pies? Two were on accident, I didn't read that the recipe I was using made two, but, I was at work on an "only needed in case of emergency" job, so I gave a couple of the pies to the crews that were working the holiday with me and took the rest home for the family dinner). It's in the recipe section under pies, here: www.notmsnmoney.proboards.com/post/1379439/threadPepperdoo's pie crust: Pat-in-pan Pie Crust Ingredients: 1 1/2 c plus 3 tbs all-purpose flour 1 1/2 ts sugar 1/2 t salt 1/2 c vegetable oil 3 tb cold milk Directions: Place the flour, sugar, and salt in the pie pan and mix with your fingers until blended. In a measuring cup, combine the oil and milk and beat with a fork until creamy. Pour all at once over the flour mixture. Mix with a fork until the flour mixture is completely moistened. Pat the dough with your fingers, first up the sides of the plate, then across the bottom. Flute the edges. Shell is now ready to be filled. If you are preparing a shell to fill later, or your recipe requires a prebaked crust, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Dock the surface of the pastry with a fork and bake 15 minutes, checking often, and docking more if needed. VARIATION: For a 10-inch shell, use 2 cups all-purpose flour; 2 teaspoons sugar; 1 teaspoon salt; 2/3 cup vegetable oil; 3 tablespoons milk. "Quick, crisp but tender, it needs no rolling out. I highly recommend this pie crust, especially if you think you can't make a good pie. This recipe can only be used for one-crust pies - you CAN'T double the recipe and roll out a top crust. The mixture is just too tender to transfer from the pastry board or cloth to the pie." (Marcia Adams) Cooking from Quilt Country LOL I use pepperdoo's crust too. The first time I made it DH said, 'You did it!'

We had Bob Evans carryout last night. Fried chicken family meal that included 6 fried chicken breast patties, family side mashed potatoes w/ gravy, family side green beans, family side dressing, rolls, and we added a whole apple crumb pie.
They have a 20% coupon code for online orders and give a free 1.5 liter Coke product to you if you order online.
Cost before tip was $32, and there is more than enough for leftovers today, and there stuff seems to reheat really well.

I'm making enchiladas tonight.
$5 for two pounds of beef. Two packs of enchilada seasoning $2 Two cans tomato sauce $1 Two packs whole wheat tortillas $3 Two cups shredded cheese $2
So, $13 there, but it's a double batch. One will get frozen.
Then rice and sauteed zucchini on the side...which is probably a dollar or two for a boat load.

I made chicken fried rice last night: 3 cups white rice - don't know the price, but it was something under $3 for a 5lb bag snow peas - $1.00 cut up baby carrots - $0.99 for the bag, but I only used like 1/4 of the bag soy sauce - already had on hand, don't remember the cost sesame oil - same as soy sauce 1 chicken breast, broiled and cut up - $1.99/lb 1 glove garlic - no clue 1/4 white onion - around $1.50/lb DH is home today so I'm asking him to help make the meatloaf for tonight. Hopefully he can handle that.

I had a hockey game after work, I got home about an hour ago. I don't like eating anything big or heavy this late, so dinner was quick and small - a grilled cheese and tater tots, with lots of ketchup for dipping.
$.20 - 2 slices wheat bread $.15 - 2 slices Kraft singles $.30 - tater tots $.10?- ketchup
$.75 for dinner.

Today is going to be a MAJOR cook day. I have a pkg of 3 boneless pork chops (3 meals) and a pkg of 4 chicken leg quarters (6-8 meals). After I add the carb side, salad and/or veg the deals on the meat portion were SOOOO good each entire meal will avg $1 per serving. I couold use some ideas about cooking pork chops (no frying). i learned to cook by osmosis from my Mom & she NEVER cooked pork as my Dad was raised kosher and until his death the ONLY form of pork he ever ate was ribs out.How you cook the pork chop will vary depending on the cut of the pork chop. If it's kinda thick and boneless or has a bone at one end it's probably a loin chop. Since pigs have had a lot of fat breed out of them the past few decades these types of chops tend to dry out quickly. I like to brine these is a solution of 1/4 c kosher salt to a quart of water for at least 6 hours before cooking. Grilling with a foil pouch filled with soaked wood chips gives a nice smokey char to them. BBQ sauce optional. My personal favorite is a blade chop which will have several types of muscle in the same cut and the meat will be darker (and more flavorful). These are nice prepared as above or in the following (from cooks country website) : Serves 4 Chops thicker than 1/2 inch won't be fully tender in the allotted cooking time. Ingredients 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika Salt and pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 bone-in blade-cut pork chops, about 1/2 inch thick 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 onions, halved and sliced 1/4 inch thick 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon beef broth 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon cider vinegar Instructions 1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 300 degrees. Combine onion powder, paprika, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and cayenne in small bowl. Pat chops dry with paper towels and rub with spice mixture. 2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until just smoking. Brown chops, 3 to 4 minutes per side, and transfer to plate. Melt butter in now-empty skillet over medium heat. Cook onions until browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Add garlic and thyme and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in ¾ cup broth and bay leaf, scraping up any browned bits, and bring to boil. Return chops and any accumulated juices to pan, cover, and transfer to oven. Cook until chops are completely tender, about 1½ hours. 3. Transfer chops to platter and tent with foil. Discard bay leaf. Strain contents of skillet through fine mesh strainer into large liquid measuring cup; reserve onions. Let liquid settle, then skim fat. Return 1½ cups defatted pan juices to now-empty skillet and bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until sauce is reduced to 1 cup, about 5 minutes. 4. Whisk remaining broth and cornstarch in bowl until no lumps remain. Whisk cornstarch mixture into sauce and simmer until thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in reserved onions and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Serve.

Tonight is all leftovers. DH is having baked fish and potato and corn cakes - i make mashed potatoes and mix in fresh corn kernels, bread crumbs and seasonings with an egg as a binder, make patties and fry them. I'm running tonight, so I will have a small serving of last night's spaghetti and meatballs when I am done. So no additional costs associated with tonight's meal. And no additional work, either.

Tonight is hamburgers and leftover cheesy potatoes. Maybe broccoli from a frozen steamer bag for a veggie.
Pretty simple. DH will handle the grilling and I just need to man the microwave for 10 minutes or so.
Cost - burgers .80 each sandwich round - .18 each half a pan of cheesy potatoes $4 (probably won't eat them all) broccoli - $1 Various condiments - ?
So, about $9 for the four of us.

Tonight's dinner is kielbasa, corn on the cob and salad. Corn and kielbasa is $5.49. Probably another $1.50-2 for the salad. Couple cents for butter for the corn.
I made burritos last night. $6 for 2 pounds of 90% lean hamburger, $1 maybe for homemade refried beans, $3 for tortillas, $1 for sauce, $1.50 for cheese and probably another $0.50 for sour cream and seasonings.

POM, I am going to try to cook rice like that tonight. I tried to make sticky rice the last time I made Korean food, and it was an epic fail. Home 6, You want sticky rice? Then don't add the oil or butter and don't stir it. I think. I hope it turns out the way you want it! Real, Chinese sticky rice isn't made with the same kind of rice as you're thinking of, POM. It's made with pearl rice (glutinous rice), and is a very different consistency. It's used in desserts, as stuffing, and for some kinds of dumplings.

Fast food I forgot to grab my extra sandwich for dinner, and I'm not going to be home until around 10:00. I'll probably stop by McDonald's and grab a chicken sandwich off the dollar menu, and a large sweet tea. I loved their fries, but now they make me sick. I won't have enough time to go anywhere there might be a line. Maybe I'll grab a bagel at Safeway instead...

We are also having pulled pork sandwiches tonight, but I am feeding 40+ people. So, I bought 13 pounds of pork for $25, 48 hamburger buns for around $5, and a giant bottle of BBQ sauce, which I think was $8. Someone else is making beans and cole slaw and dessert.

Tonight is pizza. About $2 for the dough, $5 for the cheese, $1 for the sauce and $2 for the basil (ours hasn't grown enough to use yet). So $10 for 2. Tomorrow is kabobs ($8.50) and beans ($1.50), so $10 tomorrow too.
I've realized the most expensive part of our dinners, that isn't on here, is our drinking habit. We polished off a bottle of wine last night that we prob paid $15 for. Just got another bottle at the store for tomorrow for $16. Oops....
