I've also noticed that v5 doesn't honour HTML entities like — anymore. It treats them as literals.
I guess another plugin needed to fix that too *sigh*, although I can harmonize it with the smiley mnemonics.
Rather than #somecode# (what we had before) or :somecode: (what we have currently), the new smiley mnemonics for extended smileys will be simply /somecode. For example, /banana
This is similar to the TeX and LaTeX standards.
The reason is that both former alternatives require Shift-Key-Type-Shift-Key sequences that make them more cumbersome to type.
I'll add in some escape codes for special characters using the same syntax. As a basic set, I'm thinking:
--- - inserts em dash `` - inserts a left double-quote '' - inserts a right double-quote /deg - degree symbol /tm - trademark symbol /reg - registered trademark /copy - copyright symbol /e/ - e with acute accent (also, /o/, etc.) /e\ - e with grave accent /e^ - e with circumflex / / - inserts the whitespace between '/'s
Hence,
"Cogito ergo sum." - Rene Descartes, per GlobalQuote (r)
could be escaped
``Cogito ergo sum.'' / /--- Ren/e/ Descartes, per GlobalQuote/tm
and would appear instead
“Cogito ergo sum.” — René Descartes, per GlobalQuote®

Putting in the escape codes is the easy part. Getting these darn smileys to work with the WYSIWYG editor, however...

moon/Laura and Jaguar: try putting on the VSilver skin (where I've been working) and using the smileys interface there (in the Reply only; QuickReply isn't handled yet). You should be able to do all of the following: - Select smileys to put into the hotsmiley boxes, and have Proboards remember them - Be able to insert smileys from both the 'List' and the hotsmiley boxes in the following ways: 1) clicking on a smiley with the cursor not in the editor should insert the smiley at the end of the text 2) clicking on a smiley with the cursor somewhere in the editor should insert the smiley at the cursor location 3) clicking on a smiley with something selected should replace the selection 4) inserting smileys in Visual mode should always insert the image; inserting smileys in BBCode mode should always insert the mnemonic. 5) also try simply typing in one of the mnemonics in BBCode mode, such as -raspberries- - Be able to switch between visual and BBCode modes, having the smileys switch from images to mnemonics and back again - Be able to quote somebody else's post with smileys (from the menu--not the new smaller smileys) and have them appear as images in visual mode and as mnemonics in BBCode mode - Be able to edit a post and have the smiley images/codes show up properly - Be able to have your editor default to BBCode, and have it load your default BBCode If all of these work correctly, I'll apply the same script to the QuickReply. If not, I'll shut it down, restore the old smileys, and take care of it tomorrow. Many thanks for your help.

I should also mention that the Alt+Number shortcuts for the hotsmileys aren't working currently. I'll put that in later.

I just realized that plugins can be disabled for specific skins, and so I've disabled the old smiley plugin (which isn't compatible with the new one) for VSilver, and left it enabled everywhere else. I'm going AFK for several hours. Anyone reading this is also welcome to switch to VSilver to try out the new interface. See if everything works properly and report any bugs here.

Also, moon/Laura, you might want to try out the admin interface for adding smileys. I don't have it documented yet. It's more complicated in some ways than the old interface, and less complicated in some. The little icons next to the various controls will pop up useful info. You can find the settings under the 'Smileys' tab in the ' Smileys and QR Upgrade' plugin. Ultimately I'm going to add a button to the WYSIWYG toolbar that will allow posters to add their own personal smileys to the list, and have the info saved with their profile.

The MOST strangest BLEEPING thing just happened. I was on YM happily reading the $7 a cup coffee thread. And I didn't touch anything, I didn't do a dang thing and I ended back here on this thread. It's THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Have YOU seen my own smiley collection. I got it set up on Icey's Board. It's over 120 smiley's and counting. Just one question will there be a limit to the amount I can add in to my profile ?

Yes. The data will be stored in something called a 'key'. Each key can store up to 4000 characters of data. The metadata for each smiley would (educated guess) take up 100 bytes per smiley, and so you'd max it out at 40 smileys. If you happened to have all your smiley images in one location, I could cut the overhead down to ~20 bytes per smiley, which would give you room for 200 smileys.

What do you mean ? All my smiley's are on Icey's Board in the Smiley Thread. I set them all up in a table format. There's 132 of them now that I whittled it down somewhat.
Okay I need to get a Photobucket account.

he won't be able to see it, sugi, because he's not a member there. it would probably be best to host them on photobucket though.

Virgil, it seem like the smiley widget is working correctly for me, though I don't remember how to add smileys to the hot box.. Just hover the mouse over one of the boxes until an arrow appears next to it. Click on the arrow and choose the smiley to put in the box. I've now modified the post template for our 60,000+ skins. Hopefully I didn't miss any. Now, for the QuickReply...
