Moon, Being an IT person in a former lifetime(and trying to get a NJ DOL to pay for an IT Linux cert currently) I'd like to know if you know the following: 1) This Beta release of V5. Are we the only PB board on it? 2) Is this hosted on a separate server? 3) If not a separate server is it in a virtual partition ala Solaris 10? 4) It appears the visible technologies and what V5 is using behind the scenes compared to V4.5 is different. Since this is to be a major release what are the major defferences technology-wise, ie. sw used and what features, benefits, etc. makes V5 different from V4/V4.5? Obviously answer the last when you have time but I personally and professionally would find it very helpful. Perhaps it is time to teach myself minor web programming technologies like HTML, CSS, Visual Basic, etc. So it would be helpful to know where to concentrate my efforts. (On my current to do list is to relearn some Powerpoint so I can tweak my former module's slideshow for PSGCNJ. The current team lead is in a time crunch so ... Oops! TMI? ... ) FWIW I am sick and sleeping roughly half my usual so as the saying goes this is me on 4 hours sleep.

To any and all moderators - if you are ever in the chicago area please let me know. I'd like to buy you a large Will you buy me a small one if I ever am in the area again to visit family? (Insert old pray emoticon here) I'm curious, Moon and Virgil are you still happy being the board to win the honor of being the first Beta v5 gineau pig? (Boy do I miss easily accessible spell check!) Now how much I use it will be revealed.

Updated due to QR regression. I'm thinkng that by the above statement ... you mean that the Quick Reply box has reverted back to it's BBCode view? (I'm guessing BBCode view, because it's no longer in the "Visual" (with a white background) view where the text wraps and you can actually SEE the smiley icons). The page it goes to when I select the Quote or Reply buttons seems to working in the Visual view mode ... just not the one at the bottom of the tread pages. And just as an aside: I used IE8 from home last night and everything that was working appeared to be working correctly ... or at least correctly enough as far as the fixes go. I'm still using IE7 at work and most things appear as they do on my IE8 machine ... except for that pesky Quick Repy box I mentioned. Steady or techies in the know, what is BBCode view? I'm guessing it is show me BB code or BBC code but I don't know what BB or BBC might be. Big Butt code, BBC - the language that programs television programs in the UK or what. (OK I know its neither of that and I'm not current on all the languages especially all the spawn that live mostly or soley in the MS space.) TYVM.

It's just an unofficial standard on how to mark up text to give it formatting, etc. The natural choice would be HTML, but i) the complete HTML standard is huge, ii) HTML is unnecessarily complex, iii) HTML presents various security vulnerabilities if not properly marshaled, and iv) malformed HTML markup can corrupt the layout of an entire webpage. As for the regression I mentioned, SASG, I am referring to the elimination of the full WYSIWYG editor from the Quick Reply. It looks like I'll have to do some more tweaking before that will work properly.

Are we the only PB board on it? - NO. We were merely the first one, by about one day. others started upgrading on Wed.2) Is this hosted on a separate server? I don't know, but I don't think so. They were at a point where they felt things were stable enough from a coding standpoint to allow people to start upgrading- although it IS still part of the beta. They're still making some changes, of course, but most of these are supposed to be fairly minor3) If not a separate server is it in a virtual partition ala Solaris 10? Haven't a clue, though I'm sure it must be built on some form of AIX/Linux/Solaris. That's a more stable environment than Windows.4) It appears the visible technologies and what V5 is using behind the scenes compared to V4.5 is different. Since this is to be a major release what are the major defferences technology-wise, ie. sw used and what features, benefits, etc. makes V5 different from V4/V4.5? I can't answer that because that isn't information that they've provided. I know that HTML5 is part of it, as well as how and where they're hosting their cssObviously answer the last when you have time but I personally and professionally would find it very helpful. Perhaps it is time to teach myself minor web programming technologies like HTML, CSS, Visual Basic, etc. So it would be helpful to know where to concentrate my efforts. I, too, need to teach myself both HTML and css, because all template modification requires it and I haven't the understanding to go in there and mess around. So, in the meantime, i ask people on the support board who DO know how to do it and just follow their directions.
also, the visual tab (wysiwyg editor) wasn't meant to be part of quick reply- only full reply. if virgil can get his plugin to work, that will be nice, though.

I haven't messed with HTML in so long I'd have to start all over, I think. I found it darned cumbersome, frankly. I did find this for CSS: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/CSS/Getting_Started It's supposedly for rank beginners, which would be me, for sure. I'll try to take a look at it when I get some time to concentrate. Never too late to learn, as "they" say.

of note, Virgil, those of us who have bbcode as our posting default had that formatting in the quick reply box as well. The only thing we didn't have was the visual /bbcode tabs. Now, our formatting no longer displays in quick reply.

moon/Laura: I'm still messing around with the QuickReply and the full reply getting the smileys to work. The problem with the QR default being Visual rather than BBCode is known. I planned on addressing that as soon as I got the smileys fixed. I don't understand the rest of your post. Are you saying that you can't access BBCode? I'm not having any problems.

I've almost got the QR upgrade a VSmileys up and running. I've restored everything to what it was for now since I'm going to be AFC for a while.

No Virgil, i could access both of the tabs from QR, it just didn't have my bbcode default formatting filled in on the bbcode tab anymore, like it used to. So if i wanted my formatting, i had to use full reply.

Firefox and Chrome have built in spellcheckers. IE has a plugin called IESpell that can be installed.
To get IESpell: IESpell download page. Follow the directions under the download links to install and use.

I'm assuming you're taking a well deserved break. *-*-*- I appreciate all the work you guys are doing to bring this board up to "our" standards/needs/demands.

So if i wanted my formatting, i had to use full reply. Ah. OK, thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize that the default formatting was something that appeared as markup in the actual editor. I thought it was something Proboards applied after the fact. (It isn't a plugin, correct?) I'll have to compensate for that in the modified QuickReply.

nope. when I open up either reply or quick reply, I see this- and then type in between.
[font face="georgia"][font size="3"][font color="ae09e2"] [/font][/font][/font]. And no, it's not a plugin.

by the way, i'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but I moved our nav tree down to just above the thread/post list, and i added another under the quick reply. that one doesn't drop down the menu like the top one does, however.

I'm not able to see either, or the 'Back to Top' you mentioned that accompanies each post. If you're using the 'Layout Templates' feature or 'Colors & Styles' in Admin, the changes are all skin-specific, meaning that you have to make them to every single skin. I was complaining about this in the 'Am I the only one who's noticed...' thread.

Virgil: The "Back to Top" is in the lower right hand corner of previous post - or on your post after it's been put on the thread.

yes, Virgil, and I've made them in all skins EXCEPT for yours.. because I don't want to mess them up. Understood. I haven't made any changes to my skins with the exception of a tweak to the forum width in the CSS settings. Feel free to apply any changes in 'Layout Templates' to any and all V- skins. I'll notify you if plan on making any skin-specific modifications. Consider yourself the full and exclusive controller of the layouts.

They use(d) elements that Proboards v4.5 didn't offer, but you should now have full creative power over yours in v5. I haven't actually ported over the V- skins yet. They currently comprise the few basic settings that I started with in the skins editor---the settings Proboards was aware of. All of the special fonts, decals, HUD elements, buttons, title art, etc. was accomplished using special script and CSS injections. None of that was ported automatically into v5. I will get them 'back up to snuff', along with some nice improvements that v5 makes possible, but its a relatively low priority. As an aside, the extended characters in your upside down name are showing up as '?'s everywhere now for some reason.

What i've failed to is keep notes of what I've added to all these skins. going forward, any new ones I make, I will copy the default (which also has all of my additions) and then modify from there. That way, i don't have to do it manually each time.
