We are most of the way there! I have one more big transfer to make into the cabin category. Hopefully I can make it next week. DH has had some medical things come up, so I might have to redirect. I will have to look at it all as it comes in. I am going to owe our savings account some $$

It's official, I have gone insane. I was gift wrapping for charity at my local Harley-Davidson dealership yesterday. It was pretty slow so I did a little lookie-loo shopping. I must have been blinded by chrome and intoxicated with exhaust but I called my husband and asked if he wanted a new motorcycle for Christmas. I normally am quite a level-headed individual. Especially when it comes to financial matters. So what in the heck was I thinking!?!? We already own 2 small Harleys that we each ride and we have talked about someday getting a touring bike but as you all know - I have not been saving for a new motorcycle! We go back on Friday for him to look at it. It's a 2012 and absolutely perfect so I know he won't find anything wrong with it. I'm hoping they'll sell it today and get me out of this ridiculous bind I've put myself in.

The good news is that they sold the Harley we were looking at.
The bad news is that they sold it to us. ;D
So, I obviously have re-routed my existing savings in several areas to cover a significant down payment. In my mind I weighed several different savings categories (do I want to keep my Norway & Denmark savings - no planned trips? Nawww, I can use that for the down payment) to easily come up with a chunk of cash. And we don't have any other vehicle payments or cc payments so the rest I financed with our HELOC which I had just finished paying off. I'm reallly good at racing debt so I don't think I'll need to join the WIRRacers but it's nice to know it's there if I'm ever in an emotional slump.
I am a HUGE proponent for Emergency Funds so I want to be sure to mention that we have had a 6-9 month Emergency Fund for several years now and I'm not the kind of person to declare a new motorcycle an 'emergency' so that money won't ever be touched until it really, truly is an emergency. In fact,[climbing onto soap box] If you don't have an emergency fund of at least $1000 I strongly suggest you start one NOW.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

Norway I think the lead in is perfect and we should start a new thread with "2012" in the title, if you like I can log in as "captain redracer" and pin it to the top, or if you have that info you can too! Since these have become are permanent home and coffeegirl has left us we might as well make it "official" I can't believe we have been on these thread for a full year!

dvm - I'd be happy to send the opening I have to you so you can put it where it belongs. I'm not at all familiar with starting a new thread and would prefer to leave it to a professional like you.

Only 5 days left in 2011, if you count today!!! What a year! It's been a good year, but I'm ready for some "boring" days, if at all possible!!! I need about a week where I don't answer the phone, and just read, or cross-stitch, and sleep late. Of course, I'll go crazy within about 6 hours, but it's nice to dream! Over New Year's weekend, our house will be invaded by family for a demo/redo party. We had a spiral staircase that DH and I took down and sold on Craigstlist last week. My architect uncle and electrical engineer cousin are coming for four days, and with my dad, my brother and my DH's assistance, will be giving us a new straight staircase with a half-wall. It'll open up the house, and I'll no longer be so worried about my stairs! It was darn near impossible to carry anything up or down the spiral stairs... and forget about using them if you weren't young and healthy. My poor grandparents had to walk all the way around the house to get in the one time they visited because of the spiral staircase! Anyway... of my four goals for the year, 2 are 100% done, 1 is within $40 of being done (and will hit the 100% mark on Thursday), and one we left far behind. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how we did, and what we spent our money on. A new roof, a new garage door, and a new furnace (immediately following a chimney fire on Thanksgiving morning). We spent quite a bit on Christmas this year, but I will be adding up all of the damage, and creating a week-by-week savings goal for Christmas 2012. I also set up a week-by-week savings for insurance costs about 2 months ago. I added up all of our car, life, and home owners insurance, divided it by 52 weeks, and started saving. By this time next year, we'll be able to turn all of those bills into once-annual payments, instead of having them scattered throughout the year. We'll also continue the practice with our school and property taxes, and will have the full 52 weeks to save for them - we were a bit crunched for time this year, since we bought our house in May. The other big thing I did this month was start a NYS Deferred Comp account of my own, and there's a whopping $880 in there for 2011. Heh. It's the public version of a 401k, and my goal is to reach the maximum contribution for this coming year, so I'll add that to our 2012 goals as well. The first month or so of 2012 will have some upheaval, which I'll update you all on once it happens. My final numbers for the year are as follows: 2011 Accounts | Due | Goal | 11/17/2011 | 12/27/2011 | Need | Saved | | New Roof | 9/1/2011 | $5,500.00 | $5,500.00 | $5,500.00 | $0.00 | 100.00% | | Taxes - School | 9/1/2011 | $3,700.00 | $3,700.00 | $3,700.00 | $0.00 | 100.00% | | New Car | 12/31/2011 | $5,000.00 | $2,994.89 | $2,994.89 | $2,005.11 | 59.90% | | Taxes - Property | 12/31/2011 | $3,000.00 | $2,035.46 | $2,960.85 | $39.15 | 98.70% | | Total | | $17,200.00 | $14,230.35 | $15,155.74 | $2,044.26 | 88.11% | |
Tobinikui: 12/27/2011 $15,155,74 (5/5/2011 $2,450.00) I will hit 100% on the Taxes - Property account this Thursday, but figured I better post my numbers while I had a chance! Any money we have left over after paying our taxes will go directly to the fund we're saving to pay off DH's Deferred Comp loan. There will probably only be $100 or $200 leftover, but I'll take it!! Happy Almost-2012 everyone...

My last post of the year. I didn't make my goal but I knew from the beginning that it was a stretch so I'm not too bummed. I talked with my DH last night about my savings for this past year, showed him the spreadsheets I use, and my plans for 2012. He always knew I was a good saver but I don't think it really registered with him until he saw the spreadsheets from the last several years. He was nearly speechless. I think the part that surprised him the most was that he saw in black and white that I've funded all our vacations for the last 4 years. The realization of "Oh! We spent $2874 on that trip to XXX that year?!?!" really made an impression, I think. Regardless, it was a good conversation and made me feel quite proud of all my planned savings accomplishments over the last several years. Enough blabbering - here's my final post of 2011... Fund | Goals | Last Month | This Month | % Met | Roses | Norway | $3,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 33.33% | | Denmark | $3,000 | $2,000 | $3,000 | 100.00% | Dec | Vehicles | $2,000 | $2,000 | $2,000 | 100.00% | August | Gifts&Donations | $1,500 | $1,500 | $1,500 | 100.00% | May | Harley Trip 1 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | April | Harley Trip 2 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | June | The Keys | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | June | Cultural | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | March | Vacay Prop | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | February | Christmas | $500 | $500 | $500 | 100.00% | May | Oleana | $500 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 200.00% | February | Quilting | $500 | $500 | $500 | 100.00% | January | Fun Stuff | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | 100.00% | July | TBD | $0 | $0 | $0 | | | TOTAL | $17,000 | $14,500 | $15,500 | 91% |

Hi all
Still alive here. I haven't added up all the stuff we have done this year but with saving and planned (and some not so planned... snowmobiles anyone?) spending we have done really well.
I have managed to pay for a new water tank and filter, 3 vehicle insurances for a year, planned fix for the truck, 2 snowmobiles (used), property taxes, house insurance, a ton of little things, Christmas, 2 big hobby trips, a trip to a wedding, started a "hubby lay off fund" that will be fully funded soon (enough for 2 months), fully funded our emergency fund (good things come out of stressful job losses) and a new plasma tv, we have kicked butt!! (is that about 14 roses right there?)
The only thing I regret is that we won't have a ton of money for RRSPs and money to add to our EF (TFSAs) this year. Extra money I have is going to hubby lay off fund but once that is done I will divert. We will buy a few RRSPs, reinvest the tax return in the EF and then once hubby's fund is done, split the money up to pay out the TFSAs and start an RRSP fund. I have also decreed (she who does all the money work can decree..) that our year of "indulgence" is done. We paid off our debt a year ago, let loose a bit this past year and way overspent BUT we had fun, we are having a great time with the snowmobiles and we still have a good amount in our savings account (RRSPs) HOWEVER the time of insanity is over. Back to some more self control so that less money going out, meaning more in the savings accounts.
Thanks to you all for the support and positivity that you show here. It helps when I am feeling "spendy" to come on here and see that goals are achievable and we can do what we set out to do. Looking forward to a new year of saving!! Happy New Year all!! Be safe.

Hi all,
I'm planning on joining you in a couple of days. I finished my debt race today (although I still have mortgage debt). I'm working on figuring out my savings goal amounts. I know there was some discussion about starting a new thread for 2012. I'm in favor of that especially if people will consider the following. Apparently the dollar amount in the parentheses is the amount of savings people start with. What do people think about making the amount in the parentheses the goal savings amount instead of the starting savings amount? I think seeing the goal in the tag line would be more motivating and allow people to see how close (or far) people are from their goals. So if we start a new thread and change the tag line components at the same time it is a much cleaner change. Obviously, I'm a newbie so I'm okay with whatever people want to do. I'm excited about joining you guys soon.

If we're contemplating changes, does anyone reallly use the info about peoples starting post page number? Just thinking outloud... Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $8,500 ($0 1/1/12 / Goal=$16,000) Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $8,500 (Start=$0 / Goal=$16,000) There are some Savers that prefer to have massive multi-year goals that don't have an annual goal in mind so they could just do the basics like this, if they wanted to. Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $38,572 (Start=$24,369) I'm sure as the new year starts and people begin to be creative in their posts we'll get a chance to see some good options. But, if you still want me to post updates, PLEASE, begin your line with your UserName, Current Date, Current TotalWatch out 2012 - Here we come!!

No Coffegirl's thing on page numbers was to make it so on the extensive MSN pages you could find a person's starting post if they couldn't do it themselves, I think esp with a new page we don't need the number at all.

Here is my updated information! I am saving until the end of April (well, I want to reach my goal by the end of April) so do I need to make a sticky? I don't know how to do that.
