laramik: I'm so sorry last month's income was so low and this set you back on your goals a bit. You have done some impressive saving over the past months. I hope things start looking better for you soon.

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I checked in, and it's great to see all of you doing so well! I've hit a few bumps in the road, and I'm sitting at $6,000 saved (more or less all purpose savings, but aimed at home down payment.) However, looking back at the past year, I've been able to open and fund ($3,000 so far) a Roth and go on a 2 1/2 week trip to Italy (which I just got home from.) I believe I can still hit $10,000 while fully funding the Roth by the end of the year. Keep on saving!

Thanks freshnewday!
I didn't mean to be such a downer. I was feeling low at the moment. I'm focusing on being thankful that we were able to pay the bills and buy groceries and gas. I know there are so many out there that can't do those things. Also, it did give my frugal heart a bit of a thrill that we can make it on less.

laramik: glad you're feeling better. I was going to point out that you've more than doubled your savings since starting in April! But your point about now knowing you can make it on less is priceless. Hope you won't need to prove that to yourself again soon, though Well, I've been MIA for over a month now. Work has continued to be insane, and I've had some unexpected travel, and sometimes I just can't bring myself to sit down in front of a computer at home when I spend my workday there. I've caught up on reading, but didn't too well tracking the comments for people. I did want to say: Great updates everyone (I had individual names first, but there's too many of you making such awesome progress)! freshnewday I hope your stress level has been easing up -- yay on DH's getting more work and STILL making progress on your goals, despite all the roadblocks. Later: okay, I just read further, and see the cause of your stress has only gotten worse. I hope all goes well for your daughter, and that you get your vacuum working soon. saverbee Hurray for Rose #6!!! Tobinikui: Sweet deal on the taxes - and great job on putting those savings to work for you! Saving4norway - Thanks so much for all your efforts keeping our updates. Your comments with your 9/22 update made me smile Love those fluffy saving accounts!

Now for the question/comments from August that I never replied to:
dvm07, freshnewday: My catastrophe fund is just in a regular savings acct at my credit union, earning 1% interest. The market is just too volatile these days: I don't want to risk having up to a 30-50% loss just when I need the money. That being said, the main reason I was so focused on getting that fully funded this year was because I wanted to be able to earmark more $$ to go into my taxable investment accounts. As of today, I have about $5560 in various DRIPs and index funds, most of which were purchased in March 2009 (I have to admit, it was as much luck as knowledge/skill that I happened to get in right at the bottom of that bear market). Though this does give me a couple more months of living expenses in case of emergency, I'm really not looking at this as emergency money. I'm not sure what it's for, to be honest -- some possibilities are: a future supplemental income stream from dividends, or a fund for some much needed home improvements.
My everyday emergency fund ($1k in savings, plus a $1k buffer in my checking) is for expenses that are unplanned but should be anticipated, like an unexpected car repair, or my back goes out again (which it has been doing every 2-3 yrs) and I have to pay for a couple doctor visits, a few PT visits, and possibly meds.
At any given time, I have planned out my cash-flow for the next 12 to 18 months. After doing this for a few years, this past year I started including annual and semi-annual expenses (home and car insurance, property tax, etc) as being paid out of my cashflow when they're due, instead of putting money into a savings account for them. Probably wouldn't be a lot of people's preference to do it that way, but it works for me for some reason. I also stopped including in my cashflow the extra paycheck I get twice a year due to being paid twice weekly. So that's another sort of "emergency fund" built in, although if I've kept up with all my savings goals out of my regular cashflow, then I give myself permission to spend at least part of those extra checks on something fun.

It's going to hurt to see this dwindle in early November when we spend a chunk on DD's palate expander, but I am thankful we have the money to take care of this first stage of her orthodontist work. Somehow we have to get started on retirement. DH is 53 with not a cent saved for old age.

Sorry I haven't been updating... things have been chaos these past few months. Vacation, extra travel hither and yon, sick dogs/vet bills with more to come, hubby getting the news of a 2 month lay off while the company installs more equipment.... We are back on the austerity program to save some of the money he will lose in wages while off. I "found" another $350 biweekly, I think. We'll have to see how a couple of payments go and then reassess. I am too stressed for this. Between work, the dog, now worrying about money again. I don't want to dip into our emergency fund... I just don't. I am hoping we can make it without doing that.

I leave for Africa in two weeks!! And nothing about the trip will be on the visa!! Of course I think I need to be honest and point out that a lot of that "savings" came from generous donations for which I am extremely grateful

financiallyfreeinbc - sorry to hear that you are going through a lot of stress right now, hopefully things will be brighter soon! I know you don't want to dip into your emergency fund, but everything that you are going through sounds like valid use of the EF so don't feel bad should you need to use some, once everything straightens out you can replenish!
dvm07 - bon voyage and have a great trip to Africa. I'm sure those who have donated to funding the trip are happy to make it possible!
patchwork150 - so you have already had an offer accepted? if so congrats!!

We made a little bit more progress this month and I hope to have the Christmas fund filled out next month with a commission check I just found out I earned last week. DH had to have an MRI done on his shoulder and I have not figured out what our plan with that is, but we probably have a few weeks until I find out how much the bill will be! I am also waiting for another big chunk of the cabin savings to come in.

FinanciallyfreeinBC 10/21/11 $65 600.17 (1/02/11 $4,459.76 WIRS1)
RRSP-$10 000 TFSA (EF)-$30 000 (not including interest accrued) General savings/planned spending-$12 837.96 My hobby savings-$3 693.93 Super sekret savings account-$500.41 Hubby lay off fund-$1050.00

Planned spending-savings: Property taxes 2011-$1353.71 Property taxes 2012-$601.44 House insurance savings 2012- Truck insurance savings 2012- 4Runner insurance savings 2012-$603.20 Rav4 insurance savings 2012-
So, we are down some in the overall scheme of things. We have spent here and there and I haven’t kept track of some of the smaller things. Our savings is definitely down with all the craziness of late. I don’t know where $5000+ went… With the other accounts up so much, I know that we are actually down even more than that but I don’t feel like figuring out the exact number. We also have vet bills yet to pay ($800) that will come from savings. We are still looking into the water system. That sort of slipped this summer.
We bought ½ a cow so we don’t have to worry about beef for a while.
We bought snowmobiles (2nd hand) as we couldn’t stand the thought of another winter without something to do. This might save my sanity. We’ll see.
We insured the truck for a year after the 3 months was up. Haven’t started a new account for that yet, but will after hubby goes back to work (he is being laid off for 2 months in the new year).
Speaking of layoff, he was funny when he phoned and told me it was happening. He then said “so, let’s plan to go somewhere!” I asked if he was on crack because between Christmas, RRSP’s, TFSA’s and his lay off we sure as hell won’t have money for a trip. I was pretty much freaking out about how we were going to save for his layoff since I don’t have enough time/money to get it all… only 1 month’s worth… I then realized that for those 2 months, we don’t have to put money into savings so that will save us $800 biweekly and we will be fine with the 1 month I can save. We will also, at some point get EI (unemployment insurance) but with a 2 week waiting period, then having to wait for him to put in for his first week, we won’t see money until he’s almost back at work. I will also have my massage therapy savings (we get reimbursed so I think of it as savings) so that will get us through as well. I absolutely don’t want to touch our EF. It is growing nicely and I want to add to it, not subtract. (yes, that is what it’s for but if I can get away without it, I sure as heck am going to)
Gratitude-that I found the strength to put my puppy down before she became any more sick, that my friend didn’t suffer in his car accident-it was immediate, that my hubby has been a huge support for me during this insanity, that I have not only gotten control of our finances, I have started to take control of my health/weight, that my friends and family are there for me when I need them, that I had some time owing accrued and took the last week off to just get myself together.

I hope to update my savings for this month tomorrow. I've been off the boards for a long time, and I'm trying to get my act together to start playing with y'all again!
I like the pumpkin, Captain Duck!
I'm so very sorry to hear about your puppy and husband's temporary layoff, finanicallyfree. But it sounds like you have everything in hand.
Also sorry to hear about the bad month, LaramiK, but not at all surprised you had what you needed. I hope next month is a better one.
Congrats on the new house, patchwork! Ah, the joy of adding a home repairs category to the savings....
Have a fab time on your Africa trip, dvm!
Congrats to all who save and those who need to spend some savings (at least it is there, right?)!

busybee sorry i don't have an alternate solution, but Saving4Norway did mention that you or anyone who needs the template can PM their e-mail address and S4N will send the spreadsheet template to you. The template makes it so that you don't have to key all of the td/tr's over and over, you just do a one time set up of your categories and the columns for the dollar amounts sit seperate from the td/tr codes. this way you are just changing dollar amounts when you make an update.
ntrick welcome back!! congrats on your new baby boy!
dragon2008 nice update!! and already working on your 2012 goals, that's great, i need to add that to my to-do list ;D
S4N hope your laptop problems are not too bad!!

It's one thing to go without access to a computer for a week because you want to -- It's a completely different story when you CAN'T get online for a week. Thankfully, DH now has my laptop up and running and for less than $100! Yea! OK, so on to the Updates I promised... I'll be back soon.
