Our older daughter asked if she could shave the side of her head in this style: What would you say? Is it worth the fight? Should kids be able to do whatever they want with their hair, it being a non-permanent alteration? Inquiring minds want to know!

Yes to the hair, no to the nose ring.
Hair grows back, so experiment away.

LOL! Nose rings have come up recently too... But I prefer they don't do anything that leaves scars until they're older enough to understand and accept the consequences.

I'm probably the wrong one to ask, though. If it were remotely socially acceptable, I'd shave my head since it's so much cooler in the summer. Unfortunately, people would probably think I have cancer plus I'd be a little embarrased at the fact that my head is pretty lumpy, so I keep the crazy hair around.

I shaved my head about 6 years ago. It looked horrible, but it was better than the lice infestation that we spent 3 months trying to defeat.

I'd say yes to hair. I've been dying my 11 year old's hair different colors every other week for months now. I would have said yes to the nose ring, but did not think of the scar issue... would have to look up how prevalent scaring is... i would think at 14 i'd be ok with the nose ring... but usually piercings to me are about avoiding infection, and if the kid is responsible enough to keep it clean... so it would likely depend more on the kid than the age...

There's not much scarring with a nose ring as long as you take care of it and don't try to use a larger gauge. The most I've seen is a little dot, which if you have any freckles/moles at all you won't notice. Also, lip rings won't leave more than a little dot unless it gets ripped out or again a larger gauge. I've never known anyone to get an eyebrow piercing that didn't have some scar. There's a level to how large you can stretch your ears and yet still have he option of letting them shrink back down to normal.
*When I meant larger gauge I meant size wise not # wise as a 6 is a lot larger than a 16 gauge.

Meh, not sure the objective of a cut like that is to be prettier, so that's not a big concern I'm guessing.
It's about a statement, experimenting or attention, not increasing appeal, IMHO.

I would want to know "why". 1 - I really don't get the "style" and 2 - I would want to make sure it was really HER choice vs everyone is doing it. Same goes for other things as well, unless they are permanent, in which case - wait until you are 18 Lena

Wow! Lena just posted exactly what I was thinking as I was typing so I just changed it. Why? But at least it's not permanent if she really wants to do it. I just would like to know why she would want to do this. Did she not like the purple or pink or whatever color Dark had a thread about? Is this just another step to being original?
I don't think anybody is pretty enough to pull that look off because it makes you look lopsided! Not that everybody wants to be pretty...

Well, in my daughter's case NOBODY we know has the cut... I was genuinely surprised by the request, because I had no idea she even knew what it was (she referred to it as the 'skrillex' cut.. and I had never even heard of the guy). I think she's doing it for statement/experimentation. I'm not really a hair person.. never have been, never will be, which means my daughters haven't had the benefit of a mom who does their hair in braids, curls, whatever. This probably plays into a certain... independence when it comes to their hair. Our younger one is developing dreds, for instance, not because she really wants them, but because I so rarely bother telling her to brush her hair anymore (not worth the fight).

I shaved half my head when I was only a couple years older, so I suppose it makes sense that they're interested in doing it too

I admit that I like dreds. Especially on a guy. And really long. ;D Loop - Did she every try the color? I think Dark mentioned you guys did the bleaching but had not yet colored her hair. I was wondering how she would look platinum. I've always wanted to try that but was afraid I'd end up bald.

My son had hair down to his butt from the time he was 6 till about 18. He loved it and it didn't bother me in the least. I don't know why he was so insistent, because it wasn't the style and no other kids wore it like that. If he wanted a nose piercing, I would try to talk him out of it, but only because, to me, a nose stud looks like a zit.

Dumb school teacher question: will her school allow it? According to our dress code, you can't have hair styles that are a distraction, and it specifically mentions shaving numbers, words, etc. into your hair. I don't know if they would allow this or not.
It's not the worst act of rebellion so I personally wouldn't care. It's just an effort to differentiate herself. But it's also not the most attractive option. Even on that particular girl in the picture who can pull it off. Most people's hair would gravitate to that area to try to cover it. She is a model on a photo shoot.

My son has long hair, not to his butt, just below his sholders, my only 'rule' is that hair can't be in mouths... ... he has a pretty good t-shirt collection for a 13 year old (but then he's been an adult M for awhile) ... and wears a fedora most of the time out of the house... Daughter is still trying to find a style, having an in between stage at 11, not little girl and not teens, etc. ... i think the hair is good way for her to express herself at this age... without wearing clothes that are too sexualized for her age... I think people are getting a lot less judgemental about stuff like this.

When does school start? If she goes for it, I'd try to give her a bit of lead time so she can get used to the style, the looks she encounters, and any second guessing she may feel before she heads back to class.
She may totally own it from day one, but since it is a pretty big change, I'd want to give her a chance to get back to owning it before she had to deal with all of the other kids.

If I looked like the woman in the picture you posted, I would absolutely go for that look. She's stunning!

As I recall, the winner of Project Runway 9 rocked this look pretty hard.

I'll check out the hair policy at our school, but I don't recall it being in there. She did blue during the school year and the only comment she got from a teacher was, "I want to do that!"

If it's not a problem with her school, or anything else she might have to do, I'd let her shave it if she wants to. I'd make it clear, though, if she doesn't like it she's sorta stuck, so to be sure before she goes through with it.

Ummm.... you realize I already said she could do it right? It's just hair. It'll grow back if she hates it.
Or that's what I want to say but I can't stop staring at those perfect breasts in the OP. It took me a couple minutes to realize she even had a funky hair cut... or hair at all for that matter. True story.

So itchy and ugly to grow back out I'd let her do it anyhow since it is reversible. What 'crowd' is doing this do at school? If they're good kids & this is just their statement of silliness, I'd go along.

None. All the kids at school have normal colored, normal styled hair. There were a few kids asking their parents if they could dye their hair when we dyed our daughter's and I got some fairly unfriendly looks from those parents. Wait, there are a couple really young boys, like kindergartner age or thereabouts with these adorable little mohawks.

Only on the hair. There are a couple 10 and 11 year old girls with nose piercings, and ours don't even have their ears done, so we're good on that one.

If she does it, and it brings on a meltdown, she could always get a wig. They've got some really nice ones now, it seems.
