Like I'm spending money on a wig to cover up a weird hairdo that she asked for in the first place. What kind of lesson in consequences and responsibility would that be?

I shaved my head twice. Once in high school and once in college. I had no idea how much of my femininity was tied to my hair.
Shaving it off allowed me to explore my feminine and masculine sides. It also brought out a lot of confidence, but it came at a price.... I got a lot of crap for having a shaved head in a hick town.

Oh, no, Dark. You misunderstand me! Buying said wig would be all about girlie-darling! My daughter decided, as a teen, to get a permanent in her hair. I told her several times to be careful, and that a super-curly wild-looking style wouldn't enhance her features. Did she listen to mom? Naaaah. She came home looking like she'd been in a fight with a thresher and lost ... badly. The wig came out of her savings.

Yes to the hair. No to the ring -- only bulls should have nose rings in my opinion

Sorry, you mistake me.. we already said yes. Just curious how other people feel. So why ask? And what was your rationale behind it? To be the "cool" parents? Shock value? To feel more "progressive"? Be prepared... other parents will judge your daughter and you as parents... if you dont care, then more power to you. Completely random curiousity. And no, don't care of others opinions unless the girls care.. then I go mama grizzly on their asses

Really? Which one? I couldn't see any of the current ones doing it. None of them are cool enough. Maybe Later back in her younger days, cause Canadians are weird like that.

I guess I should further clarify that I'm more curious how other people would feel if their own child came wanting a "weird" haircut.
Guess "your kid" wasn't obvious enough.

Ok... have fun... let us know how it works out. My personal reaction to the hairstyle is punk/ mod/lesbian... someone who is a bit of a recluse... smokes cigarettes... trouble maker, etc... ETA: apparently I'm a hair snob and didn't realize that until now.. Fixed

Uh huh. Our daughter asked us if she could do this. I didn't even know what a skullet or skrillet or whatever the hell it's called was until I googled it after she asked. And the "your kid" in quotes means that if you read the op you'll see that she asked what you would do if your kid asked for a weird hair cut. You know, the same way damn near every thread on this board is some variation of this is my situation how would you respond to it, what would you guys do, etc.? ETA - Also, just for the record, I was friggin awesome as a kid, and I resent your implication otherwise.

And if saying yes when my kids ask for a weird haircut is me living through them... ok, I'm good with that. Though, since I had a nearly identical haircut, not sure why I'd need them to do that....

Yes to the hair. No to the ring -- only bulls should have nose rings in my opinion Totally agree on the nose ring.. the potential for permanent scarring is there even if minimal.. then again.. I think earrings are pointless too.. so, yah. my opinions on piercings are fairly irrational so I leave those decisions up to Dark

I would say yes. If people stereotype then so be it, perhaps she will be the one to teach them to look beyond their first stereotype to the whole person. That a preconceive notion on a single aspect of person that most likely took less then 60 seconds to form is highly likely to be inaccurate. Of course if they are unable to have the mental capacity to continue to gather facts about a person beyond the initial 60 seconds it takes to visual judge a person, or if they unwilling to reevaluate their opinion of a person using multiple criteria instead of just a single dimension of that person, then I'm unsure if the opinion of that person would matter anyways.

I let my kids do what they want to their hair. As long as they keep it clean and washed, i don't really care what style they wear.

Considering DD spent most of her life with green hair no matter how much we tried to keep pool chemicals from damaging it, I'm not worried. But, yes, I'd keep my kids away from someone who would let their kids be "different." hard enough being a parent without more bad influences out there.

I'm wtih Jen and MM on this one...hell to the mothe f'n no would my kid rock any kind of weird hair. I did allow her to get some beautiful blonde highlights this year so I am not against doign thigns with hair...but nothing that will make a person look worse. I don't get that logic.

Beauty is very subjective. Although I don't personally find that style attractive, I can understand that some people do. Granted, I'm making this whole parenting thing up as I go along, so take it for what it's worth but I think that the teen years are normally a time for kids to experiment. My job as a parent it to make sure they do that experimenting in a way that allows them some freedoms (which have huge benefits not just for potential life lessons, but also in finding out what is comfortable/uncomfortable for them) without doing them or others permanent harm. Trying a unique (even unflattering) hairstyle seems to fall in the bounds of allowing them to learn if they like the look, how others react to them when they wear unconventional styles, that they are more than just how they look and several other interesting and important things without doing any permanent damage or hurting others. Also, and this obviously varies by kid and by family, but our kids are strong willed (I know - surprise!) and I do my best to pick and choose the battles. Why argue more than you have to? This isn't a hill I'd choose to die on. The nose ring, on the other hand...

I guess I'm fortunate because this isn't a hill I'd have to die on...my dd would be horrified at a hair cut like that....even when we see girls out in very unflattering clothes my dd doesn't understand why they are trying to make themselves look bad.
now the nose ring HAS come up...she wants a very tiny diamond stud in her nose....she went so far as to buy a fake one (just a stick on one) to show me how pretty it looks!lol The answer remains no for that one...and even if I conceded, there is no way in hell my husband will (he is by far the more conservative one in our house).

I had a similar hairstyle in 10th grade. I was bored one night and cut it myself. I would also pierce my ears when I was bored too (had 6 in the left ear and 3 in the right at one point). My Mom had the same attitude as most here that it was just hair and it would grow back. I don't think she would have been as cavalier about a facial piercing though, I guess we were both lucky that they weren't "in" back then, because I probably would have gone for it!

Well, now that I think on it, I don't know any lesbians with nice hair. I'm sure there are some but since I also know straight women with bad hair, it all evens out.

I'm really surprised at how many are forcefully against a haircut. I don't think its an attempt to be 'hip' to allow your child to have rights over their own bodies and right to self expression... to teach them to be indivdiuals rather than sheeple, and i'm really suprised by zib's comment that she'd keep her kids away from any kids that were allowed to be 'different'... ?? oh my...

Why are you surprised? I'm conservative about a lot of things. Yes, there are bad influences from people with nice hair but realistically, haven't we all said, right or wrong, you are judged on how you look? Why would I want my child judged or my parenting judged by allowing my child to hang with those who don't follow acceptable behaviors? I still remember the junior in high school who came to class sporting a multi colored Mohawk. He shot his mouth off big time about how his parents didn't control him. Well, he lost his car, he lost his girlfriend, and he sure kept his hair, for a little while anyway. The school also got involved, he wasn't suspended but it was made clear that both styles had to go ASAP for him to stay in.

Well, in my defense, I only know 4. Two couples. No, I don't know which is the dominant partner as they all 4 look alike to me.
