Which is why I dumped any form of Religion years ago. I was raised Catholic and was a believer. Once I had premarital sex, I realized that I wasn't sorry it happed (I initiated it, in fact! ), I wasn't going to ask for forgiveness and I was the same person that I was before I committed the "big sin". That's when I realized that organized religion wasn't for me. It took me years and years to acknowledge that about myself. My identity and my religion were so tangled that it really fucked with my head for a number of years, especially after I decided that I needed to be who I was and take responsibility for that person without guidance from Above. Go you.

It also helps that I take comfort in the fact that "this is it" and I am going to end up worm bait. I don't need no stinkin' afterlife!

My parents had 5 kids in 7 years. Mom went on BC, and hasn't taken communion since 1974. Damn. Your poor mother!!! 7 years without a drink? That's a fate worse than death to a Catholic

If the afterlife is what Christians claim, I've accepted that I'm most likely going to hell. That's going to suck. But aside from that being a considerable "if," I don't really want to spend eternity with a God who would put people in hell anyway

I don't think religion has to or should rule your life, though. I think people can be religious and not have that be something that engulfs the whole of who you are as a person - just like how being black/female/20-something/middle class doesn't on its own make me who I am. We are the sum of our parts.

I'm getting cremated. Me too, who wants to be stuck in the ground? I have nightmares about that.

I think it depends on the religion and the person. Certain religions by nature require you to relinquish control over your own life, and Christianity is one. That's part of why I left. I decided that a life which was meant to be completely controlled by a supreme being was not a life worth living for me.

Presbyterianism is so different. You're supposed to do good works and help people because it's the right thing to do - not to earn Jesus Points. And doing good things doesn't guarantee you a spot in Heaven, but you should still do them anyway. I haven't read anything about premarital sex or anything, but I'm sure you're not supposed to do it. *The above was only given for information. I'm in no way trying to "spread the good news" as it were.

I read an analogy once that really drove home my objection to all this. Someone compared being a Christian to taking a painting class where the "master painter" has a picture up at the front of the classroom, and all the students are meant to be copying it. They all have different brushes and paints and colors, and some of their supplies are "better" than others, but that's not supposed to matter. The point is that you are supposed to be copying the master painter's picture to the best of your personal ability with the tools that the master chose to give you. I thought the analogy was pretty dead-on representative of the Christian faith and it made me mad! I want to paint my own damn picture! Especially if the materials I have are not at all conducive to copying the painting in the front.

ETA: Why can't we be called "dolphins of god" or "chimpazees of god?" they're smart animals.

I was pregnant with my first during Mother's Day. DH tried saying I wasn't a Mom yetDH did that too. He said it in front of his mom and she proceeded to tear him a new one for the next 20 minutes. I told him I don't think it is a smart idea to say in front of your own mom it doesn't count unless the kid has been born. He tried to get his dad on his side but his dad took my side too.

ETA: I think it's more important that my kids grow up to be good people, and I don't care what they believe. Got it. I feel much the same way. Even if I were religious, I wouldn't be raising my children in any particular faith. That's for them to find on their own, if they want. I'll support any decision they make in the religion/faith department. My poor kids are caught between the Baptist church that they attended regularly with me and my family, the Church of Christ they attended occaisionally with their Dad's parents, and their Dad's weird religion that believes in the Creator instead of God and teaches that some man in a village died and the villagers cut off his penis and somehow a bird got hold of it and impregnated Mary and that's where Jesus came from, and drunk people don't fall down because they're drunk, instead, ancient spirits push them down so if their skin breaks, the spirits can get in their body and some other crazy stuff. I kid you not. My son has decided there is no God, which bothers me because I believe there is. I don't care what denomination he chooses, but I wish he would choose a religion that believes in God. I don't pester him about it though. My daughter doesn't like her grandparents' and their church's demands that she convert. She'd probably listen more if they weren't so pushy and self-righteous about it, never mind insisting that regardless of what you believe, if you don't belong to the COC specifically, you're going to hell. They both believe their Dad is kind of nuts and don't want to hear anything about his beliefs.
