I've never had a brussel sprout. I haven't had anything that would be considered a vegetable - EVER.
And, I don't share my bacon.

"I fry up a piece of bacon, I cut the brussel sprouts in half, and then I fry them in the bacon grease. I remove the bacon before I put in the sprouts. When the sprouts are all ready to go, I squeeze a little lemon juice on them, and sprinkle the bacon back on-top." Read more: notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthyliving&action=display&thread=2079&page=4#ixzz1CtrbKb63FRY THEM in bacon grease? If you followed your mother's recipe (the one that allowed YOU to live to adulthood), the stats would look like what you see below. KIDS don't move around as much as we used to, so your frying in bacon grease is ensuring big time heart and blood issues for your kids. Nutritional Information Per Serving (1/8 of recipe): 219.3 calories; 71% calories from fat; 17.6g total fat; 35.8mg cholesterol; 483.5mg sodium; 509.8mg potassium; 12.1g carbohydrates; 4.5g fiber; 3.2g sugar; 7.5g net carbs; 6.3g protein. If you sauteed them in EVOO and sprinkled turkey-bacon bits on them, you'd have a similar taste without the artery-hardening gut-creating heart-arresting fat you're disguising as flavor now. Try adding Craisins and unsalted peanuts to change the flavor without adding more fat. Mom's apple cider vinegar addage was the healthiest thing she did for you! This attitude is so wrong I don't even know where to start. First of all, turkey bacon bits? Read this link about both turkey bacon and bacon bits : health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis/truth-about-your-weight-gainNutritional science these days is moving increasing more towards real foods, and good, healthy fats. I also don't think that using real bacon on your brussel sprouts is ever going to be the reason someone (or their child) is overweight. Flavoring vegetables with small amounts of fat is a great way to boost your overall intake of veggies, and there are no bad fats except the partially hydrogenated fake ones. I mean, just having a challenging vegetable on the plate is an awesome accomplishment. I also think it's really said that she feels like she has to justify cooking brussel sprouts in bacon, and is quick to point out that she only does it once a month. When did we come to such a twisted relationship with real foods that we feel that way about something healthy and delicious? Eat things that are good for you, in moderation. Enjoy them. Don't feel guilty about what you eat.

Wow- looks like I've missed a lot! I have been busy studying for a test the past 2 days, which means I skipped my workouts and did some stress eating! But I did well on my test, so it was worth it. Anyhow, back to the workouts tonight after work!

I agree that a little bacon as flavoring isn't going to hurt anyone (even though it grosses me out). We all need a little fat in our diets. Fats help our bodies feel satiated. I don't eat fats from meats, but I do use a little Parmesan cheese to flavor my salads and steamed veggies. As long as it is kept to a minimum, there is nothing wrong with it.

It is only okay when Veteran does it. I'm not allowed to say the word bacon without being beheaded because one day I had stomach pains (which I'm pretty sure was gas from eating too much broccoli.)

My daughter was doing a good one (exercise) yesterday. Ankle weights on, back on her pad, legs up, grabbed her calves just above the ankles and rocked. Said she could feel it all along her back and into her arms, upper chest, neck and shoulders. Several minutes. Cooled off by transitioning to some easy planks. Stood up and did an Arnold (Schwarzenegger) stance.
She said they're fun and pretty easy to do when your gut isn't full of bacon fat.

Somebody please explain to me how I can gain .5 lb every day since Monday when I haven't over eaten, haven't had excessive sodium, and have worked out an hour a day except yesterday? Grrrrrr.

Sawmp- Could it be water weight? A woman's weight tends to fluctuate a few pounds due to changing hormones, which can make you retain water.

Swamp hopefully its just water weight but you might be able to track it down doing a food diary. I have a bunch of food sensitivities that if not managed well seem to add additional weight just like I believe a certain kind of carbs is stored with additional water which is why poor people who eat lots of carbs have a tendency to get fatter and fatter. Anyway, for me I have things I can eat like soy which cause me to gain water weight. Unfortunately it can stay as actual weight if I don't catch it in time. So, if I notice it I am careful to eat soy no more than 3 days in a row and make sure I avoid soy for the next day or two minimum. Corn syrup is another water retention trigger for me as well. My theory is my body neutralizes what it is sensitive to by storing excess water. If I eat in such a way that gets burned off its all good, if not it becomes excess poundage to be lost the hard way sometime in the future. Meh. I can have a 5lb swing the wrong way in under 3 days eating the same or less calories but just eating things knowing or unknowing that my body isn't happy with.

I pretty much avoid simple carbs when I'm trying to lose weight, and the only thing I can think of that I've had with simple carbs is a hot chocolate I had at hockey last night because I was freezing. (I don't like coffee, the other hot beverage choice). It was an 8oz cup, I don't think that would cause a .5 lb weight gain.

By advertisers, do you mean the 90%+ of medical professionals who say how weight loss is caused by controlled caloric intake? Deb says it's caused by eating 3 pounds of meat and 1 pound of spinach each day. OK, back on topic. Do I leave work early to hit Zumba? My butt hurts from Ultimate Cardio Tuesday, I did Zumba on Mon and Wed, I'll do Ultimate Cardio tomorrow, and will do Zumba on Fri. And tonight is hockey, so I'll rush home from Zumba, throw hockey equip on DS, drive back to town, and stand there at hockey when I'm all sweaty still. I think I'll pass. just caught this now. I hope you took the night off. you've been all over the place this week already (good for you, though!) and the last thing you need is to be sweaty and standing still inside an ice rink. that's the major reason I end up sick after pretty much every tourney I play - I'm walking around in t-shirts and capris between my own games, watching everyone else play! as for me, last night I broke down and bought two Jillian Michaels DVDs from Amazon. I'll be starting that as soon as it shows up. I've been trying to get to the gym, but work has been so mentally draining lately that by the time I get out all I want to do is go home and put my pajamas on. if I've got the DVD there, I'll do it. the two I bought have workouts that are designed like the bootcamp program I do all summer - constant motion, muscle confusion from the variety, and an hour or less. I'll post back when I start using them.

It's SUPER BOWL DAY. Super "BOWL" day. More crappy shitty health-destroying food will be consumed today than on any other day of the year. Just THINK girls... you will GAIN 15 pounds today just for a commercially-created social event designed to over-sell things that aren't good for us or America. Wake up... enjoy the company of others but stick to a good intake discipline. More veggies less potato wedgies, more water less things dipped in flour and fried in bacon fat. Have a BEER or two. Ales are better than lagers. Instead of grumbling about cleaning up, make an exercise routine out of it. Wash those dishes by hand and be sure to include the clan (to dry and put away). Remember it's not who wins or loses the commercially-sponsored, gambler-supporting, illegal human trafficking game... it's all about sticking with your weight loss program and seeing it through this distraction event. Go TEAM!

152.6# So up 1.6#, but last week's 3+# loss was unrealistic. Still down overall. Not too shabby considering what I've eaten and how little exercise I've actually done. I can't wait for the glacier we're living on to melt. I'm much better at exercising outside than in.

VL- That was a pretty sexist comment_IMO. I don't even watch the superbowl, but according to you I've just gained 15 pounds. I get what your saying about the food that is consumed, but lighten up.

Wouldn't you have to eat 52,500 calories plus your normal calories just to gain 15 pounds in one day?

Did you get a peek at what the White House was serving. that would do it. The point is-- you can celebrate without sacrificing your gains. Just get into the habit of rewarding yourself with good and quality, rather than settle back to a heart attack.
By the way... 82% of women are utterly CLUELESS about their own potential for a heart attack. 4 of 5 who have had them didn't recognize the ensuing symptoms as they were having them. I have all daughters. I love them equally and my wife a bit more. I fight for awareness so reality doesn't prematurely do anyone in on my watch.
