"A pound of muscle weighs more than fat, but muscle will help you burn calories and it takes up less room than fat." I didn't say a pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat. LOL! But I will say: a pound of muscle is smaller than a pound of fat. Why do people feel the need to Nit Pic and 95% of the time, it is a male? Sorry, pet peeve of mind. Sorry -- I used to belong to a fitness forum, and it was something that was said all the time. It got to me

The more you work-out the heavier you will get simply because you are increasing the density of your muscles. In males, you will increase clothing size beyond your trimmed-normal because you are adding muscle girth (distortion). Sculpting body shape takes less intense weight-lifting and more Pilate's and isometrics. Older needs to gently blend all forms of exercise to prevent distortion, as it will be painful when you build-up without supporting the foundation.

I don't know what you college experience was like, but I didn't have to do anything special to be active during my college experience. I walked all over campus - Every hour I would stand up and go from one classroom to another - and often times they were in different buildings. For lunch I would walk to the union. I had to run over to the bookstore, or the library or whatever all the time. I must have walked several miles per day, every day. Now, I don't even like to walk all the way to the microwave.
Veteran Leader, I pretty much disagree with everything you say. If you are overweight and start doing aerobic exercise and burning more calories than you take it, you won't get heavier, even if you do build muscle. Sure the volume of fat and muscle are different, but if you burn off 5 pounds of fat and add 5 pounds of muscle, you will weigh the same and be slimmer. If you are overweight to begin with, you will likely lose 10 pounds of fat and add 5 pounds of muscle, which means you will be slimmer and weigh less. Even if you are weight training, you won't necessarily gain size. Unless you are very thin to begin with and are doing a weight routine specifically to build mass, which probably includes adding calories and protein to your routine, you aren't going to get hugely muscley like a body builder.
As a weight loss technique, cardio and weight training, along with diet changes, are highly likely to make you weigh less and be thinner.

I weigh every Saturday, I lost 1/2 a pound this week. I'm going to have to pick up the pace to make 15 in 15.

It's okay to disagree Thyme... "trimmed normal" on a guy means you can pinch your skin and not much comes and it snaps right back. At that point, you are building muscle that weighs more than fat, so typically, you increase your clothing size and weight. If you are overweight, you are working toward "trimmed normal" first, not a desired body weight. That's a myth created by places who want to sell you products on hype that they will make weight loss by osmosis. Sorry, but the only way to lose weight is by increasing your metabolism so you are burning more in use than you are store in your caboose.
BTW... cardio is METABOLISM training. So is wild unbridled sex. Both are best accomplished when you aren't fooling yourself that less calories somehow means the strength to endure while performing either. Healthy people just live better altogether. Focus on life improvement and winters will come and go without crash diets to fit in your swim suit.
Living on CAMPUS? After working out on machines... sit in the sauna for 10 minutes then go jump in the cold swimming pool and do a few laps. Jump out, repeat. You'll sweat profusely the second time around. that's PURE FAT burning off because your internal will be burning to compensate for the laps as your skin expels fat from the exertion and the humid heat. Again... nobody shouts out "look, she only weighs 96 pounds..." when you wear your bikini, but they will go gaga over your tight skin and sculpted body if you work it now.

My DH and I went to a large flea market this morning and walked for 3 hours. We were both tired when we got back to our car. It was a beautiful day and about 60 degrees...a nice Winter's solstice.
I'm still sticking to my Diet of One. I have lost 6 lbs in 8 days. I'm sure it is going to slow up now, but I will continue my walking and diet plan.

151# I've lost 3.2# this week. It's a nice jump start but probably not sustainable for me. I'll be happy to lose 1# every week. Eating healthy. Walking. Watching my salt intake. Not one bite of bakery food has passed my lips. I still had my coffee with whole milk and sugar every day, and six light beers over the course of the week. I'm only doing this if it doesn't make me miserable. No coffee or beer=miserable.

I thought my starting was 150, but when I weighed myself last week I came up as 156. Today I weighed 150 - so, I guess I lost 6 pounds. That first weigh in seems suspicious - but I guess I'll take it. It means I have 14 weeks to lose 9 pounds.

"260 RIGHT NOW!"
Broth soup, water and walking... RIGHT NOW! At 260 (and likely 5'10 to 6') you are what... a 44 to 46 waist? Your primary concerns are saturating the sodium in your system so the efforts you invest in increasing your metabolism actually gets to burning some fat. I cut off ALL WHITES in my eating to not add starches (sugar). You're a great candidate for snacking on fruits, nuts and fresh veggies on the hour every awake hour + WATER. I was there and quite a scare in my underwear... the coolest part about doing it without being a body-builder or crash-dieter (create body harmony instead) is that once you're where you're feeling great about yourself, it isn't hard work to stay there, it's just thinking through what you do.

1800 calories a day would make me gain weight exponentially! I'm a 5'1 female with hypothyroidism! Everyone's caloric needs will vary depending on age/gender/activity level/ health/build, etc.. Frugalnurse, I am also 5'1". I agree with you that I would gain weight if I ate 1800 calories a day. I am down 8 pounds and have about 7 more to go.

That's awesome that you've lost 8 pounds so quickly! What have you been doing to lose so quickly? I've only lost one so far, but I haven't been as diligent with exercising as I'd like to. I love that post- workout feeling, but I can't always muster up the motivation to workout every day. My new running shoes finally came in, and I have worked out everyday that I've had them, but I need to keep it up! On days that I don't work or have a clinical, I can work out first thing and start my day right. when I have to work or go to clinical, I'm up at 5:00 just to get ready, and getting up any earlier than that is out of the question (of course, after 12 hours on my feet, after work is usually out of the question too!)

I have cut out pop, Starbucks, and dining out. I have been cooking every day and eating smaller portions. When I want chips to crunch on, I grab some mini bell peppers and some hummus.
I have also been doing cardio for 30 min about 2 times a week.

Again - I disagree, somewhat, with veteran's advice. I think you can have a healthy diet that involves more than broth.

Before posting, you looked at his avatar photo, right? Large frame. He already has muscle from just carrying himself around! Broth, water and walking. His body will increase metabolism quick and tap fat for fuel pretty quickly. The next trick is keeping it off. NO WHITES (sugar) to give his body reason to stockpile fat again. He won't need 15 weeks to get in a groove that helps him feel better. LADIES... you are already getting cranky and you've only been lying about dieting for less than a week! Post count from the negative crowd: 2,395... 958... 809. Don't you think you're sitting on your weight problem? Try STANDING while you post on message boards. Should be good for a few pounds. Hey... I gotta go... lots of packages to carry up and down my store steps. I'll hold some in front of me with arms extended... good isometric for ABS. SOUP for lunch and a WATER to wash down all that sodium.
I already FIT in and LOOK GOOD in my suit.

I did look at his avatar. While I'm guessing I'm a little shorter, I think I have a pretty similar build to his. I was 260 pounds. I've already taken off nearly 50 pounds, without resorting to a soup and water diet.
Making unsubstainable changes in the short term only leads to regaining the weight once you can no longer subside on soup and water.
And FYI, a high sodium diet is not healthy.

No, I have the avatar's turned off because all of the moving and flashing and blinking gave me a migraine.
And, no matter what is build, I would never agree with a lay person that a liquid diet is appropriate.

I have been trying to get motivated to losing a few inches at the waist and the "back" fat. I would like for my legs not to look so flabby also. I am going to the Virgin Islands in June and wanted to look half way decent in shorts and a bathing suit. I don't need to lose any pounds. I have lost 5 pounds since the first of December because I have a hiatal hernia which is causing all day acid relux. I am seeing the doctor tomorrow to ask what kind of weight training I can do without making the hiatal hernia worse. I love to walk but I don't think I can trim my waist and back with just that. And that won't make my legs unflabby either. I know I need to start on weight training to fix my problems. What do you think I could trim by walking on a treadmill 1 hour a day and 2 -3 times a week? I have cut out my chocolate and pop, which I used to have every day, since my acid reflux problem so that should help a bit and my meal portions are only about a half cup of food before I get to feeling bad.

I have managed to lose 8 pounds without resorting to a soup and water diet. I only need to lose 7 more to be at my goal weight of 115 pounds.
I am happy with the way I am doing things and I don't have resort to being a complete asshole on a message board when people don't agree with my dieting plan.

I either lost 1 pound or stayed the same. Between the accuracy of my scale and the fact my weight can vary by three pounds I probably won't know how successful I am until 3 to 5 weeks in the future.
