Only $1,403.99 left to pay off principle to hit my 2017 goal! H and I are starting to work on next year's budget and getting this paid down even faster is starting to gnaw at us lol. At $400 a month, it's our 2nd highest bill (after our mortgage). I could do so much with that $$$! It's still too early to tell if we will be able to throw additional money at it or not. I have zero clue what our insurance premium will be once open enrollment starts Nov 1st. My health and dental providers are both exiting the marketplace...so that's awesome. *heavy on the sarcasm* It was already slim pickins for my area anyway, so this should be fun.

The school has a new principle and this is an initiative spearheaded by him. He wants to focus more on STEM subjects and feels it necessary for the children to use laptops. There is a perfectly functioning computer room that the children used last year that they could still use in my opinion. Our school district mandated that the middle school and high school students would all have tablets. The district provides them and the parents have to sign a responsibility contract. By 2020, they plan to have tablets for all grade levels. I think it is a bit ridiculous, but mostly I am glad that my kids are out of school. I would hate to bear the responsibility for 5 tablets. This seems to be the direction schools are headed in as I have heard from parents in other districts that their school-age children are being issued some type of computer device. Having said all that, it was very unrealistic of your child's principal to expect every household to purchase a compute for their kid! Ours does this. Right now 3rd grade and up receive a school issued iPad (with a responsibility waiver and annual "tech fee") that they can take home. K-2 use them in the classroom, but cannot take them home.

livinitup- That seems like an odd thing to require 2 weeks into the year- did the school give a reason for this?

Thanks to a truck throwing a rock and me being the car behind him.... I had to repair a cracked windshield this month. Thankfully, it was only $50. It came out of the E.F., but will be replaced in the next 2 weeks. I just did NOT want to use a CC. I am hoping that September brings more financial "luck". We have 5 paychecks, so that right there makes it awesome. Good money juju to everyone this month!!

bankergurl- I think we are doing a no spend September as well- we need it! If it's not an expense related to the kids' bdays or the house addition, we aren't spending.

NikiZ628 7/27/17 $ $3,975.13 (Goal $7,900.00 WIRS2&7)
Total went down a bit this update due to tapping in to E.F. There wasn't an emergency per say, we are just entering into our "tight" part of the year and it's also back to school time. I took $80 or so out of it to help cover school supply costs. Thankfully, we are all done purchasing for that now. Just gotta get through both of my kids bdays in the next 2 months and we will be out of the tight zone...you know, just in time for Christmas lol.
No matter how much we plan and prepare for this time of year, we always seem to feel the squeeze. I'm not even sure why, because we aren't going nuts with birthday/back to school spending. I think it's just so many expenses at once.

bankergurl- If I had to choose one, it would definitely be iBotta. I've earned $323 in cash since I started using it. (On Checkout51, I've only earned $66.65 since signing up around the same time). Of course you can tag along to Disney!! The more the merrier!

Alright, Murphy has hit us 3 times this past 2 month...that means he can move on, right? RIGHT?!?!
First was the car- that cost us almost $1,000 in repairs. Then our dryer went out. Thankfully, it was an easy fix (the belt snapped) and H repaired it for under $30. Monday evening, our a/c went out. It couldn't have happened last week when it was unusually less humid and hot here, to the point that we actually shut the a/c off and opened windows! No, it waited until it was full on humidity, 90+, and a holiday that businesses like HVAC repair close for. It was a long wait, but they came this morning and got it up and running in 20 minutes. $220 later anyway. My poor E.F.

Doing my mid-year budget and goal re-evaluations and i think my $6000 off of Race 2 principal is just not gonna happen (by a lot).
Realistically, my yearly goal should've been $4500 off of principal. I think I'm going to adjust this goal accordingly, so I will now need to pay off $2,448.11 to mark this one off.
Apparently, I dream a bit too big.

NikiZ628 7/1/2017 $4,129.24 (Goal $7,900.00 WIRS2&7)2017 is halfway over already! I figure this is a great time for re-evaluation and updates to my goals/budget/etc. Obviously, my EF hasn't rebounded since we had the car issues last month... I hate it, but again, I am still so glad we had it when we needed it. We booked our Disney trip for 2018 this month! I now have a deadline on that savings goal- 45 days prior to the trip. The trip is significantly more than my current goal amount, but I knew that it would be all along. Basically all of the money that I put in this savings fund is FREE money that I earn from various apps and rewards sites, so if I can save $2,000 in free money- I will be ecstatic. I do sometimes put $20 a week in from H's check, but only if we have enough "spare" money to do that. It's budgeted for $20 a week to either Christmas fund or Disney- but sometimes we overspend in groceries, etc. and if that happens, no money to Disney. #adulthoodsuckssometimes DS1's savings should hit goal after his bday in September- we put any $$ he gets into savings, so it's basically coasting until then. Roth- I've mentioned it before, but this fund is kind of a wash until our home renovations wrap up. We just do not have the extra money to allocate at this time. Home projects (not a fund- but an update anyway). Thankfully our home projects are SLOWLY getting closer to being finished. 75% of the addition is complete. We just need to finish the bathroom. DS1s room (that was an existing room) was gutted this week...boy do I hate plaster and lath, what a mess! It's just getting a facelift of drywall, raised ceilings (back to the original height-we ripped out where a previous owner had lowered them), paint, and new carpet to match the other new bedrooms. We already have the carpet and pad, so we just need to buy the drywall, mud, and paint. Cheapest project thus far lol. After that we will finish the new bathroom, redo our old bathroom (converting a full to a half bath/laundry), and then it's on to finish the attic play room. The attic play room is going to be very basic (hopefully that also means inexpensive). Beefing up the joists, floor, walls, paint, insulation, electrical. It's going to be used for a video game area (we have tv and futon) and a place for their overflow toys. I am really excited to have this space to send them to play when friends are here, etc. So, that's where I am thus far. I am going to look at my goals for the year- see how we are doing- and see if any adjustments need made or if anything new needs added. As quickly as its gone, 2017 has been a decent year so far!

bankergurl- I love Checkout51. I also use Ibotta, Mobisave, Yaarlo, Find & Save, and Shopkick (in case you are looking for MORE ways to get paid for shopping!) I also use Receipt Hog and Receipt Pal (points just for taking pics of your receipts- points redeemed for gift cards). You don't have to buy specific items with these apps. All of the $$ I earn from all of these goes into our Disney Fund.

Only $3,948.16 to pay off principal to hit my 2017 Goal of $6,000 of principal paid off! I don't know if it's a realistic goal at this point, but every dollar towards it is okay with me!
My car cost me so much more than the monthly payment this past month lol. I don't know if I ever came back and updated but we ended up paying about $900 for all the repairs/diagnostics/labor. But, my car is running again, and that makes me happy.
Of course, this week, our dryer decided to stop tumbling. I am hoping H can tear it apart tonight and see if it's fixable. We plan to purchase a new w/d set- but we don't want to do this until our renovations on the house are closer to being done. Our w/d are currently in the basement and will be relocated into a half bath/half laundry on the main floor. I don't want to stick a brand new set of appliances in our damp basement.

Input needed, ladies & gents! I do 100% of the finances for our family, in every way, shape, and form. One of my biggest fears is dying, without my husband being confident on how to manage everything, and being able to carry on a pretty similar standard of living in my absence. He has a self-described "math phobia" and while he is capable, it requires much more mental energy for him, than it does for me. To that end - we have started having monthly family finance meetings after the kids go to bed. Additionally, I am putting together a notebook with all the account information, billing periods, due dates and account access information for life as we know it, now. I will include a section on our life insurance policies & contact information too. We have health care proxies, living wills, pop-up power of attorney documentation, and have everything we need to finalize our wills (just need to find time to do this)! What else should I include? If you (have) had to go through a loved one's estate, what do you wish you would have known, or had easier access to? I think I have a pretty good idea of what to include, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything important. Anything else I could do to bolster DG's confidence, that you can think of? Thoughts? (Thank you!) We do a similar "meeting" every few weeks, so that my husband and I are on the same page (I also handle 100% of the finances). I have all of our account info usernames/pws together so he can access anything in case of an emergency. All of our important documents are in our fireproof safe. We just need to get our wills in place. We keep saying we are going to do it-- and then we don't. It's not something I want to brush off.

So, obviously our E.F. took a hit with the fuel pump replacement on my Acadia. About $800 roughly was moved out of it to help cover costs. The SUV is STILL waiting to go in to the shop, they said the part came in today and they believe they can get it in tomorrow afternoon for service. Hopefully I will be able to put some of that $800 back when it's finished!
Disney fund increased thanks to my money making apps and websites- I had a really good month on those (plus I put a little bit of our yard sale money in this fund as well).

Thankfully, I managed to save us some money (almost half the original quote!). The dealership my dad works at can replace the fuel pump- $301 for part. $200 for labor! I'll take $501 ($601 if you include the $100 I paid the other place for the diagnostic scan) over the $1100 originally quoted at place #1. I am waiting now to see when I need to take my car back up there today.

I think Murphy realized he hadn't visited our home in awhile...so he popped in for a visit yesterday afternoon! I had just picked my son up from school and I needed to run to the pharmacy to drop off my prescription. On the way there, my 2013 Acadia started displaying a bunch of warnings on the dash- "traction control off." "service traction control." "Service stabilitrak". I pulled in and parked at the pharmacy, called my husband to let him know what it was saying. He thought maybe I had bumped the t/c button, which is next to the shifter (and very easy to push on accident). I told him when I left, I would make sure it was on. When I left, I double checked, and the t/c was on. On my way home, I got the same warnings again, but this time a new warning popped up "engine power reduced". I couldn't go over 20 mph! I limped the car to the dealership that my dad is a service manager for. He plugged in the diagnostic scanner, and was baffled. He had never seen the error codes it was displaying on the scanner. Since my car is a GMC and his place is a Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealer, he thought perhaps their scanner just wasn't going to pick up all the error codes. So my husband drove the car to the closest GM service center. They did a quick scan and said it was displaying fuel pump codes and that they could get a better idea tomorrow (today). So, H calls me just a little a bit ago after they called him. It's definitely the fuel pump going out. The gentleman at the service center said "We should be able to get a part here today or tomorrow and have it ready to go for you.....for $1100" Cool story, let me just reach into my magical wallet and take care of that.
I told my H not to agree to anything, but to call my dad and see what he said. My dad said "umm do not pay that, bring me the car". So, H is going to go pay the $100 for the diagnostic scanning on his lunch and take the car BACK to my dad's work. They want to see where the fuel pump is mounted on the engine to determine how easy it will be to replace. There is a guy at his work that used to work for a GM service center, and he told my dad he could help. So, hopefully we will just be out $100 for the scanning, the $300-$400 for the part, and either free labor (if my dad can do it) or seriously cheaper labor (if his co-worker agrees to replace it on his free time).
Thank God for the EF....as much as I hate touching it, it's nice that I am not stressing over how to pay to fix our ONLY car.

I know a lot of people do not like DR, but a friend of mine and her H fully committed to his program. They are in their late 20's and were "drowning in debt" (their words). They managed to pay of $75,000 worth of debt, everything but their mortgage, in 13 months!!! I was impressed and excited for them! I could never commit to following all of his teachings, but I do use some of them in my financial playbook lol. Regardless, that is an amazing accomplishment for them! I find that big payoffs are easier when there is more than one income opportunity in the household and more than one person making the financial decisions. It can be difficult to stay the course if you don't have someone to have conversations with regarding financial decisions. On the flip side, I imagine it's more difficult to have a partner with vastly different opinions than to be a single person in a household. Good for them. I know he was working 2 FT and 1 PT job, she was working a FT job and taking care of their son (he's 5 I believe). I can't imagine how hard that was on them both, but obviously it paid off!

I was all excited that I made $330 at my yard sale this weekend....and then I see bankergurl 's update and I am like, well crap I tease, banker, I tease! I always love seeing how much you make at your rummage sales- have you done a break down yet for your blog? I am really happy we had a decent turn out at our sale. I unloaded a TON of items, so my H will be happy to get his garage back! A lot of my baby and adult clothing was marked $.25/$.50 just to get it out of there. I also sold a lot of my couponing stockpile that I knew wasn't going to be used in a reasonable time frame or before expiration dates. I am going to bundle the remaining baby clothing by sizes and try and unload them as lots on FB yard sale sites. I also have a few pieces of baby "equipment" that I want to list as well. I pulled all the remaining name brand men's and women's clothing and I am going to send it off to thredup or swap (anyone ever use these sites?). If they don't buy it, they donate it so it gets it out of my hair regardless. I am trying to decide how I want to allocate the sale profits before my next savings update!
