I got knocked down a peg or two by good old germs yesterday. I felt like death. I managed to get to the grocery store to stock up on what we needed for the next week (before this massive snow storm they are predicting hits this weekend). I came home, took a hot shower while my 2 year old napped, and then curled up on the couch until H got home. Once we was home, he sent me to bed, where I stayed the rest of the evening. Everything hurt, including my skin. I haven't felt that horrible in a LONG time. After 24 hours of rotating through various meds, I kinda feel human again- just very congested and lots of coughing. I was able to straighten up the house today, so that it's at least clean. I think I may park myself on the bed later and start sorting through our printed photographs. At least it's a sitting down and resting type of job.

I went ahead and did my desk first. It was a quick decluttering/tidy up and I now have a peaceful area to work at!

Today's plan is to finish assembling the "art hallway" I've been working on to display my kids' artwork. I used up some scrap materials to make display boards with clothespins so they can rotate out their drawings of the week! This will eliminate a pile that's been sitting on my dresser for quite some time. I also want to tackle my desk area today, it's not bad, but needs a quick spiffing up.

I managed to get most of our master bedroom decluttered this weekend. My side of the closet is now beautiful! H will go through his own clothing this week- he even said he knows he needs to scale it back. How many plain colored tshirts does one person need- especially when he wears a work tshirt 5 days a week! I got my 3 drawer nightstand cleaned out and re-organized. I can actually see drawer bottoms now! I also did under our bed, which is where I store our luggage and box of scrapbooking supplies/printed photos (this box is on my list to organize this week). I also did my drawers in our dresser. Items purged to date: 127/2,018 Any chance you want to show us your beautiful closet
My DH has WAAAAAAY too many t-shirts. [ Sure! This is my side! Hanging tops are color coordinated. Drawers are organized. Shelves are as good as they will get for now lol.

Today I will continue working on my digital decluttering. I have already backed up all the photos on all my devices, and cleaned up 1 email account. I am working on unsubscribing to irrelevant emails as they come in too. I want to clean up my bookmarks and other online items as well.

bankergurl- I was wondering how your mother was doing. I am glad to hear the interventions are becoming less, and I will keep her in my prayers regarding the potential stroke and subsequent recovery needed. You are a very strong woman, and your mom is lucky to have you there supporting her! As for the other things, we all know you will still smash debts and savings this year, even without setting any additional goals. Hang in there!

I think I want to play here this year! I generally stick to the racers/savers threads but I set my word for 2018: LESS. It's meant to take many forms, like less clutter. less junk. less chaos. I kind of started decluttering after Christmas when I was finding new homes for the kids' toys, etc. Just doing that filled an entire trash bag full of literal garbage. But I want to really work my way through the house this year and scale it back. My goal will be to purge 2,018 items this year. Can't wait to help cheer you all on this year!

NikiZ628 1/3/18 $4,608.86 (Goal $9,300 WIRS1)
Got my numbers together for 2018! I am very excited to smash some of these goals! H and I are currently doing a no spend January, just to help reset after the holidays. I also just got off the phone with Disney- they released a promotion for our stay dates so I had them apply it to our account. Less than 10 minutes on the phone knocked $309.66 off our trip total! WOO!

2018 Savings Goals: 1. Emergency Fund to $2,000 (minimum). 2. DS1's savings to $1,750. 3. DS2's savings to $550. 4. Start a retirement account- this is a vague goal, I know, but H and I are currently researching/deciding on the best way to do this since nothing is offered through his employer. 5. Fund our spring Disney trip in cash. Our goal before we depart is $5,000. This balance will not begin at zero, obviously, as we have been saving for over a year! Non Savings Goals: 1. Auto loan under $10,000. 2. Finish our home addition- at least phase I of it, which is the part we actually built on. All that is left of this is the bathroom, which is in progress. Once we complete that I will officially deem the addition finished. Phase II is renovating our old bathroom to turn it into a bath/laundry and converting our attic into a bonus room/play room (which was not an original project but one we realized we could easily do once we began the addition. We currently have the stairs built going up to it in the new part of the home, but that is all). I will post numbers after the first of the year! Happy 2018 everyone! Let's smash some goals together!

urdoingit- I wish I could just hug you! I hate that your DGS made such a thoughtless comment in front of you. I am sure your Christmas celebration was as wonderful as it could be, given the circumstances. I hope he takes that as a learning opportunity of what not to say and how to be appreciative. He is definitely old enough to "know better." As for the SS news, that really stinks! The system is so messed up and I fear with the new tax overhaul, it's only going to get worse. I hope that 2018 brings you a lot of luck and happiness, because you truly deserve it!

My last update will be my last update for the year- we did the "holiday skip a pay" on our auto loan this year. There wasn't a huge need to do it, but with H's annual bonus up in the air, I would rather free up some extra money. We just paid the interest and the payment moved to the end of the loan. In true Murphy form, our washer died this weekend. We already had plans to purchase a brand new set this spring when we finish renovating our old bathroom (turning it into a bath/laundry room). Our set is 10+ years old and came to us second hand. They were still in great working condition though- so I am bummed it stopped working. However, I refuse to put a brand new set in our damp basement. Thankfully, I remembered that a friend of ours had listed a used washer on FB for $50 this past week. H is going to pick it up tonight so that we will have something functional until we are ready for the new set. On a happy note, we finished Christmas shopping! For everyone, 14 relatives, our 2 kids, and my H, my original out of pocket cost would have been $2,208.78. What I ACTUALLY paid was $926.02!! I managed to purchase for the 14 relatives and only spend $256.61 (would've been $874.16). And I got some pretty good stuff, not just cheap junk! I make my Christmas shopping list right for next year right after this Christmas ends. And I shop all year long when I find great sales/deals/score rewards from stores/etc. I spent a little more than I wanted to on DS1, but he's 7 and he's getting harder to buy for. DS2 is 2, and I stayed way under budget for him, so it probably balanced out in the end. I am definitely ready for a fresh start in 2018. My goals are pretty much set and I am ready to start tackling them!

I’ll be starting over next year. I’m sick of myself but not too much. I just want to get back to where I was last March. I was so close to being debt free now I’m just not happy with how this year is ending. I’m happy to be alive though so I’m just going to hang in there and start over. 😢 Hang in there! 2018 is a fresh start, and you KNOW you can do it!

Race #2 UPDATE
Interest Rate Original Balance Last Update This Update Difference
Auto Loan 3.95% $24,411.93 $14,749.43 $14,398.91 -350.52

NikiZ628 (2): 11/27/2017 $14,398.91 (6/1/2015 $24,411.93 pg. 53)
I hit the $10,000 paid off principle this month! Only $705.76 left to hit my goal of paying $4,500 off this year. It's looking like I will just miss this one, but it's so close I can't be too upset about it. I'll probably only be able to pay off $350ish again next month, so I will miss it by about $350 ish- unless H gets surprised with an even bigger Christmas bonus lol. Looking ahead to 2018 and getting my goals in place!

Thus is life- I've almost finished up my 2018 budget and goals and I am very optimistic for the upcoming year!!

The local hospital isn't even covered as out of network? Maybe that's a dumb question but even if the out of network coverage is limited, it could at least be considered at catastrophic coverage. That is a good question that I didn't think of....I am looking in to that now.
The only thing on the entire plan that is covered out of network is the E.R.- its $400 co-pay after deductible. No other hospital services are covered(outpatient surgery, child birth, hospitalization, therapy/rehab, radiology, diagnostics/labs, etc.) Out of network physicians are also not covered.

Here's my takeaway for 2017. Like I posted above, having an emergency fund saved us several times. In years past, pre-EF, those minor dings to the fund would've completely destroyed us financially. So, I need to remind myself that I save the money for a reason. Not to sit untouched forever (though hopefully it doesn't need touched often), but to bail us out when the unexpected rears its head. Overall, 2017 has been a decent financial year. We've accomplished a lot on our house additon/renovation without going over budget, we are chiseling away at our remaining debts, and we've hit a few savings goals. I know we won't hit our EF goal now, but I am at peace with that. As long as I can increase the balance some before 2017 ends, I will be okay. As far as 2018 plans: I actually sat down this weekend and worked out my budget for 2018. I like to do a year at a time, and then tweak as needed each quarter. One of the BIG issues facing our budget next year is health insurance. To keep a long story short, our current provider is exiting the marketplace. We have to find a new one. Well, there is only one left in our state. One. And our local hospitals do not accept it at this time. My primary doctor does, my obgyn does not. The cheapest plan I can find is about $430 a month for my H and myself, with a $20 co-pay to primary doctor. $430 for insurance I really cannot use. My primary doctor has a sliding scale fee so if I had to pay OOP it would be approximately $80 a visit. After weighing that vs. paying the penalty, we would actually come out ahead just paying the tax penalty. So, unless our hospitals decide by 12/15 that they are going to begin accepting this insurance, it looks like I'll be sans insurance for 2018. For my budget, instead of budgeting $$ to an insurance premium each month, it's now budgeted to a MEDICAL savings. This will be to cover any medical costs and the tax penalty. It's not the greatest plan, but I really don't know what else to do (I am open to suggestions!). I haven't set my 2018 goals yet, but I have started thinking about them. I am sure they will be similar to 2017. I do know my weekly contribution to our EF is going from $20 to $50, so that is exciting and will hopefully allow us to get it built up to a comfortable balance again. I don't know how the insurance penalty works. I have insurance through work, so I haven't had to deal with this before. So what happens if you don't pay for the insurance... then there's a penalty assessed for not having it ... but what if you have a real medical issue, something that lands one of you in the hospital without insurance? Wouldn't you have to pay for that? Or if you had insurance could you drive to the nearest hospital that accepts the insurance? Sorry, I really don't know where you live and whether any of that is feasible. I just know that going without health insurance can bankrupt a person. The insurance penalty is 2.5% of your income (maximum $2,085) or $695 a person- whichever is higher. They basically penalize your tax return, so we would essentially lose 1 of our 2 child tax credits. If I had a medical emergency that required hospitalization, I would have to pay. If I enrolled in the plan available to me now, I would be paying $430 a month PLUS any hospital bills at my hospital since they do not accept the provider. The closest hospital that accepts it is about an hour away, so in a true medical emergency, it wouldn't be feasible to get there/our ambulances would not bypass our hospital to take me there. I am crossing EVERYTHING that our 3 local hospitals decide that they will accept this insurance. They didn't take Anthem from the marketplace when it first came out, but after enough uproar, decided they would. Like I said, I know it's not the best plan, I just feel like my hands are tied.

My main learning is to not beat myself up when I pull money from savings. I save it for a reason. If I need it (and mostly it's been pulled for legal bills that last 16 months), then that is what it is there for. I am not currently saving a lot, but having savings automated means that it gets saved, and is there when I need it, versus being spent and I have to struggle to come up with $1k more for an attorney or something similar. This is me. I have an emergency fund for a reason and anytime I have had to use it this year, I've felt guilty. But, thats WHY I HAVE IT. And having it truly saved us a lot of stress this year. No way could I have cash flowed a fuel pump repair, a broken outdoor a/c unit, and the insurance deductible at a moments notice. I need to remind myself of this anytime I feel guilty.

This has been such a wild year that I didn't stick with goals, and try to keep up with all of you. There used to be another man who posted on here too but I have forgotten his nick. Between Harvey, surgeries, illness, and such, I have saved some but nowhere near what I wanted. A new year is coming, and we shall try again. Woot Woot That would be TheHaitian. He still posts from time to time.

Whew. All I can say for 2017 is Thank GOD for the emergency fund. I posted about accidentally backing my SUV into my sister's SUV a month or so ago. $1500+ in damages. We had to pay $500 for the deductible, so out of the E.F. it came. I would much rather pay that $500 then the $2200 it ended up costing when all was said and done (plus my sister's $1000 worth of damage). H should receive his end of the year bonus in the next month or so, so I am crossing everything that it's a REALLY good one (It was $6000 before taxes last year). We need to beef that fund back up ASAP.

Race #2 UPDATE Interest Rate Original Balance Last Update This Update Difference Auto Loan 3.95% $24,411.93 $15,097.14 $14,749.43 -347.71 Total Paid in 2017: $3,443.72 Total Paid Overall: $9,662.43 NikiZ628 (2): 10/21/2017 $14,749.43 (6/1/2015 $24,411.93 pg. 53)Only $1,056.28 left to pay to principal to hit my 2017 goal of $4500 paid off! I dropped under the next thousand dollar mark, which is exciting! I am also toeing the $10,000 total paid overall mark- which is SUPER exciting! Scootin' right along! I turn 31 tomorrow and I can honestly say, I am pretty happy with our overall financial health at this time. If you asked me 10 years ago if we were satisfied with our financials, I would've laughed in your face! And speaking of crappy financial pasts, I realized when I checked my credit score this month that our Ch13 has dropped from our reports! My score went up 45 points and for the first time in 10 years, I have a GOOD rated credit score. It hasn't been an easy journey, but now that we are on this side of the storm, I realize it was worth every sacrifice to get here.
